i have read a bunch of postings about letters or interst/intent and other creative hasstles. you know...i personally think that the schools find it unprofessional to see letters of such nature when they state in begging terms that the school is amazing blah blah blah. all it takes is one line...and there you have it; cant be more professional than that.

I disagree. I've been told that at Columbia, Dr. Frantz hand picks the class from among those who interviewed. So, I definitely don't think that a letter stating how much you like the school would be either unprofessional or inappropriate.

It can't hurt, but sometimes it does not really help. Some schools won't look at anything you send them post-interview, especially if they already reviewed your application and interview evaluation.

Basically at every school I've been to someone (interviewer, dean, student) has told me to write a letter if I'm seriously interested and would realistically attend. I think it stands out from the masses of applications they have, among which are probably hundreds from people who will not ever realistically attend a certain school for various reasons but have applied for back-up or whatever else. I don't think it's wasted paper at all. I'd write to wherever you really really want to go.
