Letters of rec (MSUCOM)

I'll be applying to MSUCOM this coming summer/fall. Does anyone know if they require that one of your letters of recommentation be from a DO?

No, MSUCOM does not require a letter from a DO, although I would recommend it. (Can't hurt right?)
I got the letter by shadowing a DO once a week for several weeks then springing a letter request on him my last week.

I was recently accpeted to this years years class.

As to your question, about D.O. recommendation, MSU is very strict on having only 2 refernces and using their specific forms.

They don't emphasis who the partciular people are so much be what they can contribute to you as your personality and character and stuff.

I didn't use a D.O. in mine references and it never came up in my interview with them. In fact, they were pleased with my references.

MSUCOM suggests that whoever fills out the recommendation form (and it is a VERY detailed form) knows you well. Unless you have a DO who knows you well enough to fill out detailed personal questions about you, I would suggesst that you use someone else.

I have a good friend who is a DO and is a graduate of MSUCOM, would he be the most beneficial person to use?

I agree. However, MSUCOM asks for 2 recommendation forms, so you should keep some other people in mind too (science profs, etc--just as long as they know you pretty well).

My two letters were:

From the 60 year old female financial controller I worked with.

And an MD friend that I'd not only shadowed but worked along side in many community and church related activities.

Oh yeah, I got in also. Neither of them had ever written a letter of rec before but because they both knew me VERY well, they fit MSU's criteria of finding someone that knows you personally. The kind of questions they ask will not sound too hot from someone that only knows you from a class you took or that you spent little time really getting to know. MSU really does want insight into who you are and not so much on who you know.

I know that my advice is similar to everyone else's, but just make sure that the individual knows you very well and can assess your abilities in a number of situations! MSUCOM is very lenient in the way that they accept letters from almost anyone (meaning that they do not need to be a professor, a doctor, or any other type of professional). If you worked closely with an academic adviser, they are very good resources as well and probably have experience writing quality letters. I'm sure that a letter from a D.O. would help, but many people have not had one readily available and neither did I. I received a seat, so it didn't hurt me. 🙂 I wish you the best of luck!
