Hi All -
I am a reapplicant who has improved my MCAT score (24Q -> 30Q), graduated college, and gained employment as a research assistant since my 1st application 2 years ago. Since then, I have gained alot of clinical experience with my job and improved my main deterrant from my first application - my MCAT.

My question is this... for the 1st go round I only got secondaries at one school. Should I have those who wrote me letters of recommendation re-write the letters or update the letters? Many of the professors I have fallen out of touch with, so while it would be helpful to get them to comment on my new experiences, they really don't know what I've been up to for the past 2 years... I do have new recommendation letters from new people, I'm just curious about my professors...

Any advice appreciated!!

Thanks!

Get new ones. Maybe you can include one of the old ones who should mention how you have improved as a candidate since he/she last recommended you. But for the most part get new people if you can. Only use the old people as a last resort for the exact reason you stated. They dont remember you anymore. Even if they do, the adcom will still be kinda wary of that rec.

Some of that will depend on the school as well. I know some schools require at least one letter that was submitted with the initial application attempt, along with any new ones that you want to add. In addition, some schools require letters from professors even if you have been out of school for some time. I'm in roughly the same boat - I've been working in research since I graduated in '04, and when I talked to the adcom at my state school, they said that I still needed letters from my professors. Needless to say, that was a bit of a hassle trying to track them down, set up appointments, and get reacquainted enough for them to write letters.
