im an IMG applying for anesthesia this year, my question is that out of the 4 letters of recommendation we are allowed to submit to a program, should the combination be 2 clinical and 2 research or 3 clinical and 1 research? I have 2 great clinical letters from an anesthesiologist and a surgeon at academic institutions and 2 good research letters from anesthesiologists at mass general, but should I only use one or both of these research letters? thanks.

It depends. Use the best letters you can get from the best connected people you know.

It's not really a question that has an obvious answer. All else being equal, it probably doesn't matter if you go 2 & 2 or 3 & 1 clinical/research.

I suppose if a community program that doesn't have many research opportunities saw two letters talking about research they might wonder why you were so interested in their program.

If you're in a position to pick and choose between great letters from great places, you're in good shape.
