Howdy,
As a 3rd year contemplating ER (among many other things, and coming down to the wire), I am curious as to how hard it is to acclimate to the flip-flop scheduling. How many night shifts do ER docs usually have to take? Also, what do you guys love and hate about your field?

Scheduling: Not too hard but some people can never get used to it. Figure this out before you go too far into EM.

Night Shifts: Depends on the group. Some groups screw new guys and make them do all nights. Others pay more for nights so it's worthwhile. I work an average of 2 nights per month.

Love: Different pts, different problems, shift work, no call, no rounding, portability. Everyone?

Hate: See the "Denying Care in the ED" thread, gynecology, Granny dumps, social problems, certain consultants.

how many total shifts do you work a month and how soon out of residency can you negotiate the few nights/month deal?

I generally work 16. With my group I can request anything I want within reason (within reason means about 10 - 20). This is how it was from the day I joined. Like I said tho this is very group dependent. Some groups don't give you as much flexability.
