I searched for a good biochem review book for a few weeks and based on past threads here on SDN chose this one (3rd edition). I gotta say, it's an excellent book. So clear and concise and A LOT faster to read than Stryer (which I only use for the problems now). I can cover a chapter many times in the time it would take to read it once in Stryer's book. Did anyone else get through biochem with this or did you actually read the big text books?

I used this book for the concepts, and my notes for the details. It is great at giving you the big picture, but definitely isn't enough to do well on the exams

actually i disagree with the above post...i thought the book was very comprehensive and sometimes had more info than was necessary for the boards/shelf. for class however, profs have their own favorite topics that they love asking regardless of their relevance...

for the shelf atleast, i felt that lippincott's was very complete...know this book, and you are set! atleast for the biochem section....for the genetics, you might want to use your class notes and some practice Q's (pre-test, etc).

I thought it was a great book and would recommend buying it. The illustrations are pretty good if I remember correctly...

Yeah, it's pretty good but your school is bound to teach a bunch of stuff that's not in it, and will skip over a fair bit of material that it does include. It's a companion to the course not a replacement for the notes.

As for the actual textbook recommended for the course. Thats a total waste of money. Way too much detail. Your time is sort of going to be at a premium. If you really need it you can check it out at the library. Good luck. 🙂

I did think Lippincott was the best text for biochem. However, as with all things related to biochem, I do not swear by them. I swear at them.

I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone without hesitation.

Do you guys recommend Lippincott's BRS review book or Illustrated Review Book? Sorry, just want to make sure that I am getting the right one. Thanks!
