I don't know if it's elitism (i'm sure it's not), but more self-perpetuation. Minorities see that there aren't many enrolled and shy away...pretty soon there's almost no applicants and a vicious cycle. Plus, there's a few HBCUs within neighborning states. I do have a great deal of experience on the campus, and I've found similar lack of diversity. However, I *cannot* speak of the actual medical school class- only undergrad and local area.
Nebraska- i detected a bit of anger/frustration in your post (if not, please accept my apologies). My best friend is a 5th year at A&M engineering, and lives in the heart of College Station. You're right, I would not go there, especially since 3rd/4th year is done at Scott and White in Temple, due to the absolutely ALL WHITE population. You read the editorial in the TAMU paper about racism last year i"m sure- I'm not one to go to school in such an environment. I like to see all kinds- black, white, brown, yellow, etc. Just my personal preference. Others are big on stats, some on curicullum, me on diversity and community.
All- remember, Vandy as a school is excellent, and i hope you didn't misinterpret me as knocking the whole program based on the student diversity, which i never intended.•
