They require four letters of rec, one from biology, one from chemistry, one from physics, and one from humanities. I have one from biochem, one from physics, and two from mathematics. None from humanities.

out of curiosity...

why are you named moo? 😀

everytime I say it I think of cows...moo moo 😀 sorry hope you didnt take it offensively....its a very cute name moo

I received the Southern Illinois secondary on Saturday.

I already sent in the Jefferson secondary, but I thought that they accepted a committee letter? Oops. Maybe I had them confused with another school when I sent it in... I don't have letters from all those different subjects. 😱

Uh oh. I did the exact same thing as you. 😕 I don't have letters from all those different fields either. Oh well, there's one rejection in the bag for me. 🙄

I needed a nick and I LOVE milk so I just thought... hmmm... how bout "moo".

As for Jefferson, my school up here in Canada doesn't have a premed committee, but I think a committee letter will do fine.

Yea,
Jefferson requires that damn physics letter of rec. Luckily my roommate wasted his money last year on them and told me not to apply b/c I don't have a physics letter. He said he kept calling them but they wouldn't let him send ANYTHING else..HAD to be physics!

MOO: How are you applying with NO humanities letters? Almost every school I have applied to requires one. I am so glad I went back to one of my older profs and asked him for a letter 🙂 It has saved me.

Schools usually ask for "non-science" letters. Mathematics at most schools is considered "non-science." (In fact, I look at math as an art, and not a science.) For instance, I've called Sinai and Harvard and they both say that math is acceptable as "non-science." Thus, unless a school asks specifically for a humanities letter, I will apply (if nothing else peeves me off about their school).

So, does Jefferson require a physics letter only if you are not using a committee letter? This is so weird...

Is psychology a subject in the humanities?

Thanks for any help!

I think psych is considered a behavioral/social science. Humanities are subjects like English, Art History, etc. Certain med schools may have a more relaxed definition of Humanities and take your psych rec. however. I think you'd have to ask them.

Jeff's application instructions ask for letters from profs in those 4 areas "if possible." I sent 3 out of the 4 and called it good enough. I'm looking for the 4th, but if I can't get it, I'll probably send them another letter from a doc I shadowed for a quarter. I think all the "requirements" should be taken with a grain of salt. A friend of mine got many, many interviews and eventually acceptance at 2 schools (Tulane and U. Dub) despite the fact that she did not have the "required" year of chemistry. And U. Dub is not making her take it (she's deferred for a year) before she matriculates.

Oh, and, Elle & praying4MD, they do take a committee letter. In fact that's their preference.

Just got Geo. Washington's secondary in the mail. No essays, just a couple of questions about 1) whether science or people will be more important in your medical future and 2) how you will decide where to go if you get multiple acceptances (!) (Like we're all giving that a LOT of thought right now). You get 5 lines to answer each.

SMW: thanks for the information!

I'm still confused, though 😱 When you have a committee letter, does that just mean that the letter from the pre-med office at your school is sent out *along with* all the other letters of recommendation you have? Or is only one letter sent, that basically draws from the information from your recommendations?

Well, my school doesn't have a committee, but my understanding is that for schools that do one letter is sent that draws upon all the letters the committee has.

My school, which likes to go overboard with everything in order to have an excuse to charge lots of extra random little fees, both writes a committe letter and arranges a little packet thing containing all other letters. Apparenlty, this whole packet is sent out to all schools you apply to, regardless of how many the schools ask for. This concerns me. My very unhelpful advisor's only consolation is, "we're providing you a great service. " Nice to know.

That would concern me too, especially as some schools specifically say DO NOT SEND ADDITIONAL LETTERS. Maybe they just throw the little packet away? My school has what's called a confidential letter file. They keep all the letters on file, and I get to tell them which letters I want put into the packet for each school.

SMW now which schools exactly said DONT SEND ANY ADDITIONAL....

cuz I did that we all of them I think 😉 there goes a couple of rejections...

ut southwestern by snail mail for 9/15
processed about a month ago

Tulane only wants 3. They say "Additional letters are not necessary and are discouraged." Mount Sinai only wants 2. Keck urges you to think long and hard before sending more than the 2 they ask for.

The nature of a commitee letter is not simply one letter, but more accuratly described as a commitee packet. At my school, and at most schools in order for the commitee to make a fair assesment they usually require 5-7 outside reccomendations, and then they pick the best two or three and use them as support for thier reccomendation. The thing about a commitee letter that schools like is the fact that it is an unbiased assesment of your credentials and commitment compared to other pre-med students for that years applicants. Schools are well aware that within a commitee letter other specific reccomendations are included.

Secondaries:

Baylor (also had to send printed copy of my AMCAS app + MCAT scores)

Interviews:

UT Houston for 9/14 (just got the letter last night!)
TMDSAS sent out my application on 8/3.

Pam

FYI,

USA just mailed secondaries yesterday, mine came today...finally!

Alright, I just got an e-mail from Tennessee-Quillen saying that they've received my "verified" AMCAS application. They'll let me know in the next few days if they want supplemental info from me (they screen out-of-state).

Also, I got South Alabama's secondary in the mail today.

BTW, has anyone heard from Creighton or Finch??

I just got an e-mail from Rochester requesting an interview. They don't provide a date. I'm just supposed to call in and schedule for an available slot on Mon, Thurs, or Fri. Interviews start Sept. 17th.

Actually,

I called MT. Sinai and they were extremely nice and urged me to send more than just 2 if I wanted to. They said the more strong recommendations you can send, the better it is for your file. Same with Yale..same with Washington Univ., and a couple others...all want more!
I have sent in a good amount to many of the schools... like 5 on average each..

I got the Rochester interview invite today also. May try to go 9/20. Anyone else?

Hi folks,

my secondaries so far have been, UMD, UVA, MCW, Duke, UPenn, JHU, GTown, GWashington, Mount Sinai, Albert Einstein, EVMS, Dartmouth, Yale, Baylor, Case Western.

I just got my first interview from G. Washington today 🙂. Yay! (I was getting worried)

good luck to all...

Hey UVA premed, congrats on your George Washington interview! Is that your first choice? My file was complete a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't heard anything from them. Do you know when your file was complete? Also, if you don't mind sharing your approximates stats, it'd be much appreciated. Thanks!

Apparently Columbia has started scheduling interviews.

ok, well, hmm... i go to a public school with an acronym strikingly similar to my alias 🙂 and have the following:

GPA: 3.9
MCAT: 11-11-11-R
Lots of extracurricular
No research!

I'd love to go to GW, but I'd also love going to just about any med school that takes me. At this point, I just want to get in somewhere, y'know?

Best of luck with your application!

ut houston...sept 7...snail mail 🙂
