I was planning to list a shadowing experience on AMCAS. However, I recently realized one of the physicians had a few lawsuits and pretty negative articles written about this individual. I came across the 2 articles when going back to lookup some of their information online.

The articles are from 2006 - well before I shadowed. My experience with this doctor was very good (great pt. relationship and everything) and at the time I had no idea he had this issue in the past. I have absolutely no interest at all in associating my name with someone that could potentially be known as unethical. It's is hard to say from just one or two articles - especially since only one side is presented - and I'll say it is not a very positive one. I can understand how stuff like this grabs peoples attention in the media and can get blown out of proportion, but it just does not seem good at all.

On the other hand, I am sort of proud of my experience and wanted to list it - although I do have others. I have no idea if this was a big thing in his community (or maybe not at all) but I really am afraid of taking the chance of listing this person's name. If I would have known this at the time, I would have chosen to shadow someone else and avoided any potential issues.

Any advice, especially from those that have applied in the past, would be greatly appreciated.

Shadowing. 15 hr/wk/4wks. Cardiologist....

no names.

I list the names of the other doctors (which I prefer to do). So, I guess I'll have to figure out how to address that inconsistency. Thanks for the input.

unless they're the ben carson of whatever, no one is going to care that you shadowed anyone. some podunk fp doesn't flag for cool points.

I totally agree. Just list it. Unless he's one of those doctors that got dismissed in the Harlem Hospital conflict recently, it's unlikely that anyone will know him since it has to have been super controversial, which it sounds like it wasn't. And I'm sure that you gained something valuable from it either way. Clinical experience is clinical experience.

how do you put in your shadower's contact info then?

If you clump multiple shadowing experiences into one "activity", then you could just list the contact info for someone else you've shadowed instead.

hmmm... i have a unique situation. I shadowed four doctors and one of them was through a class at my university. Do you think it would be enough to just list my prof's name as contact info for all of them?

If it were me and i were putting them together as one activity, i would put it as either:

1. activity name: shadowing
contact info: person you've shadowed the LONGEST or had the most extensive experience with
additional information:
start date - end date; hrs a week; Specialty A
start date - end date; hrs a week; Specialty B
start date - end date; hrs a week; Specialty C

or

2. activity name: shadowing
contact info: you don't need to put down anything for this field, i think.. you could put down various physicians or something like that
additional information:
start date - end date; hrs a week; Specialty A; Dr. A, Hospital 1
start date - end date; hrs a week; Specialty B; Dr. B, Hospital 2
start date - end date; hrs a week; Specialty C; Dr. C, Hospital 3

etc..

So what you guys are saying is that a person could technically just lie about this? I think contact information seems more credible.

I didn't list names for anyone I shadowed, but talked about the specific experiences. Seemed to work out fine.

you realise that people get into med school, get through med school, and practice medicine every day, while lying about [something], right?

not necessarily a lot of people, but it's pretty much a constant.
