I've been tutoring local elementary and middle school kids since I was 18 every single summer. But I do it completely on my own. A friend of mine said I can't list that on my application, since I'm self-employed and there would be no one to verify it with if schools decided to check. Is this true?

You can put it on your app. Probably like 99.999% of applicants do private tutoring. It's science.

I don't know what the "standard" way of doing this is, but I put down a current client as my verification for some freelance work I do. I called her ahead of time, of course, and asked her permission. I listed her title as something like "client/[her profession]" and gave her phone number.
