LMU-DCOM Class of 2012!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I still think my Treo 755p rocks any device (including iphone and the crackberry :p)

Sprint and Verizon have EVDO internet service which is the fastest around at this time

Yes, wireless throughout the building...

Something that isn't mentioned much is how fast the connection is in the lecture halls when you're plugged in...it's AMAZING.

Love the Blackberry, just wish it was on a faster network...the EDGE is ok, but a little slow.

I plan to add Epocrates soon.

Has any class of 2012 students received their matriculation packet yet with the rest of the stuff we need to fill out such as health forms, and background check, etc? Thanks. I'm just concerned since I sent in my deposit in early 12/07 and still have not received anything yet besides the finaid packet

thanks

I sent my deposit in around the same time as you and I haven't received my matriculation packet yet...not sure when we're supposed to get it??

Yeah, don't worry man. I sent mine in about 2 weeks before the first deadline (can't remember the exact date) but I believe it was a good bit before yours went in and I still haven't gotten a matriculation packet.

I know it's ridiculous, but getting the packet is like sealing the deal in my mind, because then I know they didn't send the acceptance letter to the wrong person by accident . . . or at least if they did they have to take me now after putting me through all that emotional turmoil. ;)

I got my packet last week. I was accepted in November. I've been on travel for 2 weeks, so I haven't looked through it or begun filling it out.

I got my packet, finally! The funniest part is there was nothing exciting in there, just info on how to fill out your FAFSA (which I've already done) a weird thing on how to budget your money during med school and some info on our insurance plan. I guess the excitement is over . . . until orientation starts! :D

Where have you been traveling? For business or pleasure? I'm heading to Hawaii in May and I can't wait!

it looks like you got the finaid packet, not the matriculation packet...so your excitement is not yet over! ;)

Yeah, there's another packet that comes after the finaid packet. I haven't looked at it very thoroughly yet, but I flipped through the first couple of pages and it looks like we'll have a ton of papers to fill out.

I did a little bit of pleasure travel, but mostly business. I spent all week last week in Charleston, SC working, and the week before that in Augusta, GA working...the weekend in between though I went to Snowshoe, WV to snowboard with some friends; that was a blast!! (Except I almost killed myself, turns out I ski much better than I snowboard).

Hawaii huh?! That's awesome! My wife and I are planning to take a cruise if we can get all of our debt paid off before med school (I guess until med school is a better description) and if we can save up the money to do so.

Ooooh a cruise would be nice. I say just go for it . . . even if you can't quite afford it. (Can you tell that's what I'm doing)? We're going to be in so much debt anyway, what's an extra thousand dollars? No, seriously I hope you and the wife can take a little vacation before school starts!

I'm with ya there. The only debt we're trying to really pay off is the stuff so that my wife won't have big payments every month (mostly our cars). We'll be taking a huge cut in monthly income when she takes over being soul provider, so that will definitely take some getting used to.

The biggest problem will be fitting it into our schedules, but I agree with you, it will be worth taking a couple of days to just relax before all of the madness starts. We need some time with just the two of us, and I want to give her something special because she is sacrificing a lot to let me follow my dream.

Well...that was mushy enough for an SDN post

Awww, aren't you a sweetie. Your wife is a lucky girl. :)

I'm glad some people in our class (like you) are married because it will be nice to have friends outside of school, ya know? Also, I'll be relying on your wife to set me up with some of her single guy friends. ;)

Of course she's lucky ;)

I've already told Kyrie about how she needs to be sure to have all the single guys lined up. Once I explain to them how you'll be able to perform OMM for them...they'll be hooked!!

I'm hoping to be able to get Kyrie involved in the school functions and such, so hopefully you'll be seeing a lot of her. I would also like to try to put some sort of barbecue together before school starts if we are somewhere with a good amount of space...but we'll bein La Follette, so anyone that wants to come will have a little drive. We'll see how everything goes once school gets closer though.

Hey hoss,

DCOM does have a group called the Student Axillary Association (SAA) for spouses and significant others. My wife is the treasurer. They are a very active group and do a lot of things on and off campus. Just thought you guys would like to know.

So can anyone please, if they have time, list what clubs are available to join at DCOM? any fun ones such as a wilderness club or outdoor medicine?

These should be all of them. There may be more next year once you guys get there b/c clubs must meet a minimum requirement of people, and I know some did not make it. Thus, this list can, and most likely, will expand next year.

- DCOM American Medical Student Association
- DCOM Christian Medical & Dental Association (CMDA)
- DCOM Complimentary/Alternative Medicine Club
- DCOM Emergency Medicine Club
- DCOM Health Equity Club

Hey Thanks Nascardoc! I'm really hoping that my wife will have the time to get involved with everything (and that she wants to ;) ). I'd really like to introduce her to your wife if y'all have the opportunity (I'd still like to get dinner with you two sometime when everyone's available). I hope that our living in La Follette doesn't limit those opportunities!

how long after you sent in your deposit did you get the matriculation packet? whats in it?

I actually asked this very same question, on this very page, just a few post's up. :) It was also discussed on the pre-osteo thread. Just read through it and you'll see it. ;)

sent in my deposit early 12/07, received packet maybe 3 weeks ago, but I got the receipt for the deposit within a week

Not real good about checking this regularly, but wanted to say hello to everyone again and that I'll be seeing you this fall. VERY EXCITED!!! I'll be living in the DCOM apartments, so maybe I'll be seeing some of you more than others. Anyway, back to studying for my last undergrad semester.

Does anyone know about how full the class may be?

if you call the admissions office, you can probably get a straight up answer on this one

Trying to revive our dead 2012 class thread . . . :D

Clear!!!...ZAP
Does that help?

We have a rhythm!!! Much better :D

So hoss, have you and your wife decided where you're going to live and when you're moving out there?

How about you Syncope? University housing for you, right?

Phew...almost lost him...

We've at least decided we are going to live in La Follette, but we're not exactly sure where yet. Our plan now is to buy a house (the real estate there is amazingly cheap!!), so we've just been spending time looking at real estate online. I'm also about 95% certain that I am going to do Navy HPSP, so that 20K bonus will pay off quite the large chunk of a house!!

Sounds like you and Rose may have the ultimate party house eh? ;)

La Follette is nice and you guys will definitely make some money off that house if you choose to sell in a couple of years. I've never looked into the HPSP, but I was thinking about doing the National Health Service Corps after residency for a couple of years.

:hardy: As for Rose and I having the ultimate party house . . . maybe for the summer BBQ's, but after that it's all serious business-studying all the time. I want to do reeeally well my first semester, but I'm always down for social time! :)

I'm with ya there. I plan on working really hard, but when we have time to play...I'm gonna PLAY!!!!!!

Looks like it's me you and Syncope on this one. What is your undergrad again? I know Syncope works in IT like me.

No Doubt!!! My wife and I were going to try for a cruise before school starts, but I don't think it will work out because of me having to finish work and her having to start :(

Her parents are getting us a condo in Gatlinburg for a week though...so that will be a lot of FUN!!

When you moving down Syncope? What about you Prions?

I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry. I've been doing academic research (Prion research, hence the screen name) for the past year and a half since I graduated . . . fun, fun!

I'm moving out to Tennessee in late July, probably around the 25th or 26th! I can't wait! I hope everything works out with the apartment I have reserved until then! I'm really excited about having some play time before school starts and the BBQ is going to be soo much fun!

Did you ever happen to listen to the ExamKrackers audio osmosis? It's hilarious when they talk about Prions and mad cow disease. What you're doing is probably much more fun than I do...if I could stop working now...I definitely would.

My wife and I are moving to La Follette in May or June, so we'll be around there for quite a while. I can't wait to have a BBQ and meet everyone face to face. Rose is the only one that I've actually met because we interviewed together (except some of the 2011ers like Nascardoc).

I've talked to Bouspret a lot though asking tons of questions about the military, and he's coming down to La Follette next week along with his wife. We're going to try to get together while he's down.

Oh and Syncope, just because I see your post at the top every time I refresh the thread I wanted to say...

Treos suck!! ;)

Can't wait to get my android on later this year.

BTW this doesn't apply to just hoss...

I interviewed in January, and was accepted. I moved into the Tazwell area, and can not wait for August 1! I think I found a pretty good job, but its lab work at night. Why can't I start now :) ? I saw the Pink ceremony picture in the newspaper, for cancer research. That's real cool. I know being part of DCOM is going to be the best thing in my life. Its beautiful here and I love the area. What can I do until then? One thing though, I found it very interesting that this is the first year a criminal back ground check is performed, which I have no problem with....yet after getting a letter of acceptance and depositing 2K for the seat, what will happen to students that get kicked out due to their consumer or criminal or credit or traffic background? This process needs to be initiated when candidates apply through the service in D.C. because thousands are spent when including original application sent to the schools from that service, then the additional fees for secondary applications and then travel expenditures for interviews. Just think, after all that, too be rejected after a letter of acceptance. I feel sorry for anyone who loses out.

I can't wait for classes. I'm going stir crazy it seems. See you all real soon. Class of 2012~Is On the Way

Welcome to the boards and the class of 2012!! I cannot wait to get started either.

There's nothing to do in Tazewell, you'll have to come into Knoxville for anything fun. What kind of things are you interested in?

Us Knoxville 2012-ers are going to be getting together sometime soon at Calhoun's to have a few tasty beverages and chat it up. You should come out to that if you can.

As for the rest of your questions...I have no idea, but you're right, that would suck.

Congrats and welcome!

in regards to the criminal background check, they did it for the class of 2011 too. In fact, many, many schools are starting to do criminal background checks. I think this is a smart idea. Anyone with a felony background cannot even work in a hospital and will never receive a license, so why allow a student to go through 4 years of medical education, and $200k debt, if they can't even make it into a residency program?

In fact, the aacomas application asks if we were every convicted of any misdemeanor or felony....so in fact, this process was iniatiated right at the beginning. If you disclosed anything on the AACOMAS and were still accepted, i would not worry. I think they also do this to check for discrepencies such as marking no on the aacomas when in fact, a student may have a criminal background

Actually, I feel more comfortable going to a school that does this from the beginning. Being a physician, we are goign to be subject to much prodding and poking, so might as well get used to it now. I am sure there will be regular drug tests once we are in clinicals and residency...especially with the whole issue about physicians abusing drugs/rx while practicing medicine.

I doubt they would ever kick anyone out because they have a bad credit score...these are for serious issues such as felonies, and licensure issues.
