LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks Piratesse and Rose....
I'm thrilled to be in the process finally. It's so daunting to take that damn MCAT. It's been hanging over my head for the longest. I'm bolstered by you guys' "go for it" attitudes!!!

I have sent in my primaries and now am studying like mad for MCAT. Will send secondaries after doing test. I'm getting lots of feedback so maybe I should just go ahead and send in the $100000000000 dollars of fees to these guys and secondaries and see if any of them would interview before the MCAT.

SCARREEEEY!!

Thanks for the ideas!
Sherruns

Like Piratesse said, get your secondaries in now, at least the ones you can. It will only make the process go quicker. I think your chances are pretty good, especially with your background. Study hard for the MCAT and you'll be fine. Welcome to the forum, along with all of the other posters!!!

Unfortunately, I have been studying all day and I am freaking worn out. T minus 10 hours and we will all be OMS 1.5's!!!!!!! I can't wait.

I don't have any dog pics to show b/c we don't have one 🙁.....yet 😀. We will be getting one after tax season is over. I am so looking forward to that too. Until then, I can live thru my parents dog. I'll post a pic of him later.

Y'all are all so sweet! I'm thankful that I got on. Far better than lurking!
I was dying to talk with you guys and get your feedback!

Take care and everyone have a great night,

Speaking of dogs, my pup Sadie has been coming home lately from walks with mom very stinky. Like, I didnt want to get within 10 feet of her stinky. Couldnt figure out what it was. Well, mom and dad found it tonight.... And old possum carcass... She had been wallering around on it for some reason at one point during the walk. So she got bath number three for this month. Crazy dog....

Sherruns - you've got the spirit and the right attitude, just attack the secondary essays like that and you should be all right. There is like a 20 year age range at DCOM this year, so dont worry about being "too old" or anything like that. If you want it, then go for it! 🙂 :luck:

JLH2008 - sounds good, I'll add you to the list. I'm still undecided about housing as well... I hate to leave my doggie here, but Id really like to live in the student housing at least for the first year. I need to think about it some more...

For anyone else who might care - The lovely little ski resort I work/ski patrol at in the winters is opening up tomorrow. Come play in the snow with me. 😀

And here is the new list with JLH2008

rose351 - student apartments for first year at least
unknown3234 - Renting/possible buying house/apt
hoss22 - LaFollette for 2 years then back to Knoxville
gobluegirl - student apartments for the first/second year -
kimxwipe - student apartments for the first year -
dr. kicia - maybe buy a house, or will just make my life easy and rent out a studio appartment...we will see...
Fate408 - I think I'm going to try to rent an apt/house but I'm not for sure
EEL08 -
pamolive - Still deciding on whether or not to attend...
Alpie -
Tessy -
Zsquared -
Dr. Titanium -
Moestar -
StartingOver -
HopefulDoc1984 -
Syncope82 -
JLH2008 - has the deposit down for student housing but not sure yet

Oh, and good luck on the test tomorrow, woo hoo lasttestofthesemester!!! :luck::luck::luck:

Please don't let the poor dog walk around looking like a poodle, that is close to abuse

Unfortunately if he doesn't get clipped nice and short, he's really nothing more than a walking mop. Which is not so good when your dog loves all things wet and dirty and muddy. Don't worry though, he doesn't have any of those ridiculous puffs or shaven parts. Plus, when his fur is this short, he's soooooooooooooooooooooooo soft. Like those sweet blankets at bath and body works soft. 👍

And I finally studied!! Wohoo!! Unfortunately I now have to get up in 3 and a half hours. Oh well.

Hope you do well tomorrow!

Hi sheruns, I wanted to add my 2 cents to ease your mind. I didn't get my secondaries complete until early March and interviewed late March. I got waitlisted because of my tardiness but I did get in. Other people from my interview group got in right off the bat so press on with your applications and submit your secondaries at least to schools that will interview you without a complete file. I think with your scores you will be just fine. As for your age that's nothing, there are people at DCOM who are non-traditional including myself. I'm a 35 year old single mom and I couldn't feel more comfortable so if you have ideas of undergrad that's really not the case here. Best of luck and let me know if you need anything.

Hi there sherruns!
Welcome

Sounds like you are already one of us.
Good luck on the MCAT in Jan. We'll be pullin' for you.

I've done a few sprint tris. but nothing in the last couple of years. I need to get a bike again.

Hey Rose, I'm a skiier. Let's go!!
I tried boarding but got tired of throwing myself into the mountain...

Sounds like fun! I'm about to go to Jackson Hole in a few weeks!

Ah, you dog...
How cool is that?

I'm definately up for something around here.
Last real ski trip I took was to Whistler in 2003.

Have a ball !!😀

Are there any good skiing areas near Harrogate?

Welcome Sherruns! As another point of encouragement, the DO I shadowed did not finish residency until 2003. He just turned 50 years old. When he started the process of going to medical school, he had to start at the very beginning: first he had to get his undergrad, and then he started applying (it took him 2 cycles to get in). Not only that, but in his previous life, he built homes for a living. Do not be discouraged by your age, it will actually help you to stand out and shows the adcoms that you are mature enough to know exactly what it is that you want, and why you want it.

Keep practicing for that MCAT. I made approximately the same scores as you are on my practice exams (Make sure you take ALL of them). The only thing that hurt me was that I was so nervous through the physical sciences portion I didn't take the test like I had been practicing. After that first section, I calmed down and did much better on the next two. Just remember to be calm and you'll do just fine.

I hope to see you in class next year! Everyone on here is great, and I believe we're going to have a lot of fun and make strong, lasting friendships.

Yeah, Ober Gatlinburg is where I'm headed today and where I work. The virginia resorts are only 4-5 hours away and Perfect North in Indiana is probably only 3-3.5 hours away, just like 15 minutes north of Cincinnatti.

As far as big mountains, Im going to Lake Tahoe the end of January, we went to Salt Lake last year, and I was living in Germany and got to go snowboarding in Austria the year before that. Super cool 🙂. I see some ski trips coming about. Awesome 😀

I'm totally going for it, shasta, dr. titanium and hoss! In the next four weeks, that's 28 days LOL (stoichometry!) I'll be completing 22 five hour MCATS, online CBTS from Gold Standard, AMCAS, Kaplan and Princeton. I appreciate the concept of the zen of test-taking. I'm not that high strung but really get spazzy about tests. Hopefully all the prep will calm me down. Everyone at the admissions office at DeBusk that I've spoken with have told me to go for it and that they are holding out for the "backfilling" of positions. Sounds suspiciously like dentistry to me but if it helps me, Miss Tardy, get in, I'm all for it.

Speaking of running/skiing, I live in Reno Tahoe and LOVE it here. I'm going to miss the mountains. I'm exactly 12 miles from the nearest ski resort, Mount Rose. I run lots of races, relays and marathons around here. One of the coolest runs I did last year was the 3 mile Squaw Valley Mountain Run. We're talking three miles STRAIGHT UP to 8800 feet from 4600 feet. People actually run that! It was a complete hike for me, flatlander Texas gal. Three eight year olds and a little weiner dog beat me LOL....The beer at the top of Squaw was my goal. Doing Tahoe Rim 50K this year.

You guys have a wonderful day. We've received 25 inches of new snow at Heavenly and Incline this past couple of days. Everyone's happy!! Nevadans really love their snow.

WE'RE ALL DONE!!!!!!! 😀

I will be in Chicago tonight and playing Halo. I plan on getting better at the game over the next 2 weeks. I am going to have claw hands when I come back.

To ND, I second that. And also, Xbox live Halo? I'd love to kill you from hundreds of miles away... 😉

Way to go!!!!!!!!!!! OMS-1.5

I'm sure I'll see ya when you get back.
Have a wonderful holiday.

hi! I am such a complete lurker I finally decided to get an avatar (my last marathon finish photo!) and post. I haven't taken my MCAT yet but will do so on January 26. I have a 3.86 science and a 3.6 overall GPA. I'm 49. OLDSTER!! But I am so excited about going to medical school and am preparing the way. I've been in private practice as a prosthetist for three years now. I make artificial limbs. I'm hoping this comes through for me as I have always had it in the back of my mind that I would one day complete my terminal degree and become a physician. It's what I do every day, just without the title. So I'm hoping and praying because i'd love to go to DeBusk. Anyway, congrats to EEL08. I feel that I already know you!!
I wish everyone success. I'm originally from Texas and LOVE LOVE LOVE TexasTriathlete's posts. He's just so funny and always makes me laugh :laugh:

Wish me luck on the MCAT. I've been taking the online tests at home and am scoring between 25-32 every time. I'd love to be your classmate, EEL08!!
Everyone on here seems so friendly.

OK, so the crickets are now chirping because of this long post. I just wanted to say HOWDY! Hoping we all get what we want out of this cycle of admissions. It is a nerve wracking process, isn't it??:barf::beat:

Hey sorry it took me a while to get back to you! I feel so special that you would love to be my classmate! 😳 What are all the schools you applied to? It sounds like with your GPAs and practice scores you definitely have a shot at getting in. I will be retaking the MCAT on January 25 so you, LauraDO, runner898 and I are in good company. 😀 My suggestion for you is study with the goal of not having to take it again. Take it from me. I mean as much as I love paying for it and studying for it a second time I'm sure there are other things I could be doing. 🙄 I agree that being 49 is definitely not a detriment. I'm 29 and my husband is 39 and he says life just keeps getting better with age. I'm excited to follow your progress and see how things turn out for you. I will be more than happy to cheer you on. 😀

SILENCE...I KILL YOU (from Mrs. Nascardoc)

What is your brother's xbox live id? Someone sent me a friend request the other day and I was guessing it was him. Just in case it wasn't, my xbox live id is hoss22, send me a request when you start playing

Not as of yet. My little brother doesn't get his xbox til christmas so we have to wait til then. Sadly...

Sweet Lord, it's over, and it looks like I passed everything...Congrats to you other 2011 folks!

Good luck to those still applying (and yes, get those secondaries in!), congrats to those accepted, and welcome.

Time for LOTS of College Hoops 2K8 on my long neglected XBOX 360. Got that sucker for my birthday 18 months ago, and have probably played it a total of 4 hours.

If you need me, I will be going glassy-eyed in front of the plasma.

I think I might be the only class of 2011 person staying in TN (that's not from TN). 🙂 That place was like a ghost town when I left.

Just got an interview invite! 1/25! WOOHOO!!! 😀

I too got an interview invite today. January 22nd! January is going to be nerveracking. First I have an interview on the 11th for PNWU, then my birthday on the 16th (the big 23 lol) and this on the 22nd.👍

Ok, first, congrats to all that got invited to an interview, second, I just wanted to say that I am signing off this thread for now. It is absolutely depressing and nerve racking to watch everyday people get accepted and get interview invites and me to stare at my phone- nothing, check my email- nothing....I am going insane, I love you all and I will miss you greatly but I must stop the insanity

Until better times (hopefully...)

Laura

I don't think anyone is going to invite you for an interview until you've taken the MCAT, lauraDO. Its not like you've been reviewed and passed over. I doubt they've even looked at you yet, because your file is incomplete. So don't be depressed.

no I know this, I guess I'm less suicidal depressed and more impatient depressed. Although I know logically that no one will give me an interview until the mcat, a small part of me thinks that maybe someone will say 'screw the mcat you are LauraDO we want you even if you get a 14, how could we turn you down' I'm an only child, it's a breeding thing, I guess- out of my control

Everything will work out okay. Trust me, LMU is where I wanted to go and I was a wreck even though I was in the first interview group this year! Just do what you have to do to get there. Meanwhile you can still talk to all of your future classmates! 🙂 (And we can roam the streets of Knoxvegas together!

Ryan, I was heading that way this morning to ski but something came up and I wasn't able to go along. Maybe sometime soon! Hope it was a good day for everyone!

It's so nice to be on break and I'm sure the first years are even more relieved! Merry Christmas to everyone!

I didn't know you were considering withdrawing. Well, I wish you the best anyway! And congrats on doing so well and being tenacious!

Well DCOM is a great school but our situation is a little bit different. I have not interviewed at any other schools yet so I'm not in anywhere else. My husband has been accepted to AZCOM and he will be attending and I will be hoping and praying for an interview. I'll still be posting here if that's okay because there's quite a few people here who really want to get in and I hope they do. 😀

I'm now in Memphis and a little less than half-way home!!!!! Wooten wooo!!! I'm driving the rest of the way tomorrow. Waco, here I come! I miss my roomie already. 😍 Everybody be careful driving home and vacationing and working and stuff!

Aww, too bad JLH, the snow was incredible today 🙂. I'm so worn out. 12 hours of snowboarding and only one incident. Some little kid fell and busted his lip pretty bad, about a 3/4" avulsion on the outside and he might have chipped one of his teeth on the inside and part of it was stuck in the inside of his lip. Nothing too serious, just a fair amount of blood and the little guy was scared. You guys let me know if you are coming up and depending on the day I might be able to pull some strings and get some lift tickets. Its usually hit or miss though, it just depends.

We'll be getting our XBOX for christmas too, so I'll have to put whatever name my brothers feel like picking up and we can all try to keeel each other together. Im ok, I dont play nearly enough like some of these Halo nerds do that are ridiculously amazing though... I'm usually Jewkilla (long story..), but I dunno what they will want to pick.

I hate you. I really do. Like, deep down. Send some of that snow this way!! Tahoe is one of my favorite places on earth. We are going out the last week of January and I cant wait. Its going to be amazing. Last time I was out there they just had a storm dump 10' the day before. Best. Snow. Ever. Good luck on your MCAT and all that studying, I know how nerveracking it can be!! 🙂

Be carefull with all the crazy christmas drivers out there! What a true SDN junkie... posting from the road, shacked up in a hotel somewhere in Memphis, half way home... brings to mind a song

East....no, no, no...

West bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east...errr...west bound, just watch ol' "Piratesse" run.

Changed a little to match the journey of Piratesse 😉.

Congrats to Justagirl912093771 (whatever the number is) and to the rest of you all with interview invites!!!:banana::banana: 😀

LauraDO - relax just a little, you're gonna give yourself an aneurysm.... Like TT said, they probably are waiting to even look at your file until they have everything number wise in. That means MCAT too. Just focus on studying right now. Blow that thing out of the water. Do well on it and good things will happen. Somewhere.

EEL08 - That stinks that you arent coming to play with us next year, but congrats to the hubby for getting in at AZCOM!!! You can still come play with us here in this thread though, we dont discriminate. And at least you know where you guys will be next year. Good luck to you both 🙂.

they probably want to, but they have to talk themselves out of it every day because it would be unfair to the other applicants.

Greetings to all and MERRY CHRISTMAS! Just a quick note: As I have posted so many times before, I am very, very, very anxiously awaiting the results of my interview at DCOM on 12/7. I interviewed with Drs. Cross and Zajac. Man, they could be professional poker players. Stoic, stoic, stoic. Nevertheless, they were not rude at all, not even in the least. I just had ZERO idea whether they thought I was a rambling dork (plausible) or a Nobel Laureate in the works. It was tough to read them. Lots of staring at clipboards. I only remember bits and clips of my entire interview because I was so nervous, but I do remember Dr. Z dismissing me and as I was walking out, Dr. Z stops me and says "I only have one minute left, but in one minute or less, explain why we should take you and not one of the other applicants." After circulation returned to the Circle of Willis, I explained how genuine my conviction is to osteopathic medicine, how it got started from my experiences as an EMT, how hard I have worked by working full time in Richmond and retaking classes to show that dedication and bring up my GPA, etc. Man, I was soooooooooooooooooo stressed! I hope I sounded coherent! Friday will be two weeks, and several people from our group have heard (both ways), so I'm ambiguously in the dark and keeping my fingers crossed! What a xmas present it would be to be in the class of 2012!

It's been my experience that Dr. Z can be stoic but he's a good guy. I can imagine that it's not fun being put on the spot like that, though.

More interesting is that Cross would be that way with you. He's one of the more gregarious professors here.

My interview last year was Kim D. and Cross and was very laid back. Anyways, best of luck to you.

If you make it down here then you'll see that both Dr. Z and Cross are much more laid back. Best of luck to you.

After circulation returned to the Circle of Willis, I explained how genuine my conviction is to osteopathic medicine, how it got started from my experiences as an EMT, how hard I have worked by working full time in Richmond and retaking classes to show that dedication and bring up my GPA, etc. Man, I was soooooooooooooooooo stressed! I hope I sounded coherent! Friday will be two weeks, and several people from our group have heard (both ways), so I'm ambiguously in the dark and keeping my fingers crossed! What a xmas present it would be to be in the class of 2012!

I interviewed with them and really enjoyed the experience. For some reason, I felt 'at ease' during the interview and could tell they were sincere and interested. They are both upstanding gentlemen and I might be inclined to agree with your assessment of their poker abilities; I noticed they communicated non-verbally a few times during the course of the interview. 😎

West bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east...errr...west bound, just watch ol' "Piratesse" run.

LMAO!!!! I love that song, thank you! I made it here just fine, and the weather in TX (at least in Waco) is really great this morning. I'm going to go take Cholo for a run... I missed that dog! Too bad we don't get a longer break, because I would definitely have come learn how to snowboard in Gatlinburg. I used to live in Spokane, WA and my Dad took me skiing every weekend in the winter.. but since we moved south when I was about 8, I haven't been since. 🙁 Maybe its like riding a bike???? Anyways, hope everybody is having an awesome break/holiday fun time!😀

Hey guys,
This is likely my last post until the week after Christmas (we're going to stay with my in-laws. They live in the hills of Tennessee where high speed internet is not available). Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. I'll be looking for all of you on XBox live as soon as I get home...so if you have an account (or get one) PM me with your gamer tag (or post it in the forum) and we'll go destroy some of the halo nerds (and by that I mean 8 and 9 year olds) DCOM style (meaning rip them apart limb from limb due to a greater understanding of the musculoskeletal system).

My gamertag is hoss22, so send me a friends request!
