LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
for class, do students at DCOM study their textbooks at the primary source or lecture notes? I know that at schools like LECOM and etc, students study 95% of the material from course notes. I figure reading extraneous info from a textbook would mosdef be much harder.

from what i heard...lecture's and notes given to you by the professor is where all the exam questions will come from....only refer to textbooks for further clarification, or you may be overwheled with info since the texts cover a lot mroe information than we need to know in class.

this is especially useful at dcom since the lectures are recorded so you can review them if you missed something during class

I was a little nervous there for a while . . . I didn't want y'all to think I was weird 😳 I'm glad I'm in good company. 😀

t-funk and EEL08 I'll send you Reiki 101 PM's in the morning. I just got back from celebrating my b-day and I can't think right now. 😉

Well I hope you had a fun b-day! I think the majority of people are more accepting than you think but the people who aren't are a little more outspoken and intimidating about their own viewpoints. From my personal viewpoint, I think this is creating a major rift between the American population and their physicians and it makes me sad.

when i visited for my interview, I was really interested in the facility and other factors core to making a decision on where to go to school. So after sending in my matriculation deposit, I recall that I didn't see too much diversity at the school. What is the situation there? I'm Pakistani and was hoping to see if there are any other students of color, not that it matters enough to not go to a school. Thanks.

To answer the question about lecture notes vs. books...it has been my experience that with some professors (and subject matter), you need the book. If it weren't for some of my books, I'd be even more lost than I am.

I would suggest you do a search. This question, along with many of the other questions you've asked, are answered within this thread.

If you don't find what you're looking for after searching, I'm sure we can help you out.

As for a quick answer to your question, I feel the diversity at DCOM is pretty decent...in many ways (not just pertaining to race and/or origin).

to add to mitch...you have weirdos like me, so yes the diversity is pretty decent

Speaking of diversity, what is the age range at DCOM??
Thanks.

Mr. Carney emailed me to confirm my deposit was received. Wohoo!!

To answer the question above, I'm 22...

Your avatar is my favorite! I think you should post more just so I can see it. 😀

Average age of Class of 2011 is 26.

I was just wondering how many on here actually know what that avatar is. 🙂

me but of course I'm above average

I figured even a more "experienced" person such as yourself might be too young to know what it was.

that movie is timeless 🙂

Why are you still up, go to bed, it is late over there!

wow, 26 is the average age of 2011? Are there a lot of non-traditional students at DCOM? I'm only 21 right now, will be 22 when we start school though. lol.

I'm the average! :hardy:

BTW my mom has great stories about me when I was young acting out the scene on my rocking horse where Atreyu is trying to save Artax from the Swamps of Sadness  👍

I used to love the Neverending Story. There's a band, I think Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, that does a pretty good cover of the main song.

I'm 1/16 Cherokee; which for diversity recruiting purposes means.... absolutely nothing!

Haha. I love the Gimme Gimmes, they have such fun music...

i also dig the gimme gimmes...they are so original! juuust kidding, i do like their music though. im 23 and a looot of people held onto staying in school longer than expected. does that matter? nah, we are all in the same boat now. i mean, can you blame someone for putting the real world off for a while? i cant. its what im doing by being here!

to be completely honest...i chose the avatar because its bizarre, so sorry to disappoint you neverending story fans. good luck to everyone sweating out the application process, back to studying for me.

No, just a lot of people that took the "stay in college as long as you can" theory a little too far. 🙄

or the 'get out of school, work for a few years, and then go back so you can live your life in perpetual student debt' mantra

It's not bizarre, it's cute!! I always wanted to have him as a pet. Wouldn't that be awesome. Everytime I see him I start singing, The Neverending Stoooooory... Great movie. 🙂 I think there's actually like three of them now.

Wait, have you been reading my mind? 😉

gotta love that student debt, especially if you are most likely going into a low paying speciality like fp or peds 🙁

Luckily it looks like I have a good chance of getting my af hpsp 👍 (if I I get accepted that is) , so then I'll just have the post bacc debt

I didn't know you were going to go the military route. I try not to think about how much student loan debt I have now much less speak the number.

You just have to make sure that one of you two (you or your husband) becomes an anesthesiologist

I keep telling my husband he should become a dermatologist. He has so many stinkin' skin problems.

Indian here...so we're both from south asia..i was born in the US ..but still consider myself Indian of course.

I'm not sure of the diversity, but from looking at DCOM pics, it seems to be just as diverse as any other school.

For the answer to the age range question earlier, I think it ranges from about 22 to 45 or 50. As for the diversity, dont worry about it. There is plenty and the open mindedness will help out as well. Harrogate isnt the center of cultural diversity itself, but I promise you, here in East Tennessee we are very nice and welcoming people. You will get waves from people you dont even know as you drive by in town or by their houses. You really shouldnt have any problems.

yeah, i was born in the US too. i doubt there is an actual south indian population in middlesboro or harrogate. haha, not like i care.

yep..who cares...people are very friendly there..and I experienced no form of discrimination/racism whatsoever...in fact.....people stepped out of their way to help me....and that pretty much goes for my entire life...everyone has been very accepting.....🙂

Matriculation packet just arrived! 😀

Exciting, huh?! The only thing that kinda sucks is that we have to make a doctors appointment and get like a million blood titers done! I also have to track down my childhood immunization records. Oh well, it's sooo worth it! 😀

have you been checking the website for your scores? my scores were posted a few days early.

are you kidding I check everyday! Honestly at this point I'm more worried about the fact that I basically failed all of my midterms

This might just not be happening for me....so close, but so far 🙁

haha yeah I hear ya. I got a bunch of immunizations this past summer before going to south america, so hopefully I won't need many more. I actually still have 2 more interview this week, mainly just for the experience and to checkout schools to have a basis for comparison

Oh wow, I bet you've had lots of fun immunizations then . . . including the crazy anti-malaria pills that give you nightmares! 😱

Good luck on your interviews! :luck:

FYI...not to rehash the computer stuff again but I wanted you all to know for your computers you are looking at Dell or Thinkpads, our input is not going to be the deciding factor in which one gets purchased. They know most students would prefer Thinkpads but there are other considerations. It hasn't been decided yet so there is still hope for those on the Thinkpad side of the fence.

Hope this helps!

It'll be exciting if the new class gets different computers from ours, which looks like is going to happen. I'd like to compare and contrast the two and see which works better.

If the new ones are better than ours, or if the class of 2011 prefer the new machines, I wonder if they will have an exchange program. It will be interesting to see what happens with that idea

It is my understanding this is what they are negotiating and asking for. After all the tech guys will have an easier time if all of us are using the same machines. Especially if they don't break every other day!+pissed+

Interesting...I had no idea that the tech guys hate these machines so much. I guess I got a good one....except I am on my 2nd pen. This will be very interesting for sure. All I gotta say is....backup your files and be ready for a possible switch next year 😀

I love getting new toys!!!
