LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

does anyone like ping-pong?? When i heard that dcom got a pool table (which is great fun) i immediately thought about table-top ping pong (ping pong tables that fit on top of pool tables)... Is this be a possibility? I have one of these at home that worked great!
What if someone wants to play pool while someone else is playing ping-pong😉

I'm more excited about the shuffleboard. There is one at a bar in Charleston that I go to every time I go there...it is so much fun.

What other students will we have to share our toys with? I'm guessing not undergrads, but what about nursing, P.A., and pharmacy?

Oh man, pong is fun!

Rose,

I wanna hear more about your ski patrolling experience! 🙂
I've got about five years worth of stories.... what do you wanna know? My favorite are the guys that walk around on the asphalt not even close to the snow in their skis. Or the ones that double heel eject in the mud spots when its warm and we have them, pick themselves up, click back into the skis, ski out of the mud and leave two brown figure 11 streaks onto the snow. Its classic.

Another favorite of mine is when people keep taking out our fences we use to slow people down and to mark off hazards on the slopes. So we go and reinforce them with more bamboo. So the next time they slam into the fences, they dont move. I've actually seen kids fold themselves in half around them. They are big and bright orange, mind you. And we also dont have to keep putting them back up because they avoid them at all costs. And slow down. 🙂

I've seen some really neat dislocations too. One guy looked like he had three elbows because we could see all three bones. The shoulder dislocations are the best though, especially the ones who have done it before, because they know exactly what is going on. So they either get a sling and swath for the posterior dislocations, or their hand tied to their head for stabilization of the anterior dislocations.

Then you get all the Floridiots and people who have never seen snow in their life out there in their jeans and carhart coveralls they got at wal-mart and cotton socks, and its just mass chaos and funny. We stand down at the bottom of the slopes and just watch people and laugh at them a lot most days.

The best part though? I get paid to snowboard. Whether I save any lives or not. Best. Job. Ever.

These should be all of them. There may be more next year once you guys get there b/c clubs must meet a minimum requirement of people, and I know some did not make it. Thus, this list can, and most likely, will expand next year.

Yes, this is the plan

awesome!
Hey Sync - I recently did the day/night skiing out at Keystone; it was awesome.

What's the scoop at Breckenridge? I heard there are alot of "take it easy" runs, which are nice. I started out boarding long ago at Lake Tahoe and in Utah but I recently cut over to skis. I'm definitely a convert (to skis) and was wondering what Breck is like for new skiers...

yes..the day/night skiing is the best combo....i tried snowboarding too..but didn't like it much..i like my feet on 2 diff platforms instead of 1...better mobility..and i hate dealing with those buckles everytime you get on and off the lift

Breck is awesome...the best is the hidden bowls in the back...all you have to do is take the gondola up to peak 8, I think, and then there is a T bar that takes you all the way up..it's amazing after a fresh snowfall...but of course, steamboat is the best place for powder..you can't beat it!

breck is realy nice for new skiers since it was nice long runs...but i prefer keystone though

awesome stories..where do you usually patrol?

i was recently at keystone where a small girl (10 years old) hit another girl that was already recoving from a wipe out...it was bad since she hit her at like 30mph...they both went down hard...as my friends and I were tending to the 2...some idiot kids were laughing and making fun of the 2 girls as they were coming up on the lift......and then they had the courtesy to click their heels so snow fell all over us.....my friend waited for them to come down the hill and chucked a nice size snowball at them....and then went after them ...they didn't say much after that

Where are the hiking, running, biking, kayaking and other outdoor clubs? And the ETOH club?

I believe the wilderness medicine club will include/involve hiking and so forth.....i hope im right, because I plan on joining

Where are all the posters that were waiting for calls this morning? I hope they didn't get bad news. 🙁

So, I'm curious, what happens with these clubs meetings? Is there anything special that goes on besides being able to say "I am a member of this or that club?" and having something to put on your residency app? Do any of these clubs maintain a club website? Is there a directory of the club presidents?

Many of the clubs have had at least guest speakers (many of which have been faculty) who talk about a certain topic. For example, for the EM Club (of which I am the treasurer), we've had an airway demonstration (with a 2nd part to follow, along with an IV lab), talks about residency, etc. which have been done by Dr. D'Eramo. The Surgery Club has had our own Dr. Williamson talk about Ob/Gyn surgery, and there is going to be a speaker each month for the surg club, a day in the life of a surgeon series. Those are pretty cool. The meetings also discuss fundraising ideas, community service, etc. There are websites for most clubs (although none are up and running right now I think) that have links thru our blackboard site.

I am game for a little golf before school starts...

Also, does school start at the same time for both classes?? For some reason, i get the idea that first year student's have to be there earlier than everyone else?

does anyone like ping-pong?? When i heard that dcom got a pool table (which is great fun) i immediately thought about table-top ping pong (ping pong tables that fit on top of pool tables)... Is this be a possibility? I have one of these at home that worked great!

No ping pong table that I am aware of. Many people play pool, so the table is always busy. Perhaps we can get a seperate table in the future, as well as a fooseball table. I believe we are supposed to get the shuffle board table in the spring.

Starting time for classes will be staggered next year with one class starting at the top of the hour, and the other at the bottom, or something along those lines.

As for the golf around here....it is SUPER cheap, and for really nice courses. You can play on the weekends, with cart, for $45 or less!!!!!!! Once we get closer to the spring, I can let you guys know more info about the idea. And if you don't play much, I don't care, we can play a scramble (best ball) or something like that.

Where are the hiking, running, biking, kayaking and other outdoor clubs? And the ETOH club?

Most of the outdoor stuff should go along with the wilderness club, I imagine. But I know there are a ton of runners in our class, so starting that type of club, or any other, is a possibility. As for the EtOH Club, you are an automatic member by matriculating to any med school 😉

What other students will we have to share our toys with? I'm guessing not undergrads, but what about nursing, P.A., and pharmacy?

I have heard no official statement on that, but I have yet to see any nursing students play pool. We don't have any PA students yet (they start in 2009) and we don't have a pharm school (we use University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, and they are kick a$$), so those people aren't a problem.

As for the driving range...nothing as started yet. The school is still doing some underground pipe/sewer work where the range will go (the school used to have its own water treatment facility, but they connected their sewer services with Tazewell's, I believe, so once that work finishes...then they should start on the range. I really hope it is complete by August b/c that will be my primary way of decompressing for the day. Nothing like hitting the golf ball to relieve stress....I absolutely love it.

To those waiting to hear about acceptances/interviews...Good Luck!!!

YAY!! I just got off work and as I was pulling out of the parking lot I got the call from Dr. Stowers!! I was getting worried because I know its almost 5pm TN. I am so excited though, I can barely type right now!! Thanks for all the finger crossing 🙂 😀 I still have 6 more interviews though, but I think I will only go on like 3 them and just because I've already paid for my plane tickets and accomodations. I guess it will give me somehting to compare too, although I dont know how anywhere could be as awesome as DCOM!!

I'm in..

I must warn you though..i suck....my friends make sure they are 20 feet directy behind me when I hit..and they are still hiding behind a tree or ducking behind the cart...

if there were helmets in golf..my friends would definitely wear one because of me!

congrats with the acceptance..and good luck in trying to find a school that feels better for you than DCOM 😉

Hello all, I just wanted to introduce myself. I just got the call from Dr. Stowers as well and will be attending LMU in the fall!

Also, DrZoom just called me and he is in too! He's in NY right now for another interview and doesn't have computer access so Im posting for him!

Yeah, I have a feeling that will be pretty darn hard, DCOM is awesome!

congrats with the acceptance..and good luck in trying to find a school that feels better for you than DCOM 😉[/quote]

Sup everyone. I got the call from Dr. Stowers as well and I'm in. Still waiting on a reply from ATSU-SOMA and I've got an interview next week at LECOM-Erie. Now to come up with 2K in 14 days. For anyone who interviewed 2/19, I'm the guy from H-town, Texas.

Congrats to us and everyone else that's been accepted. Did we interview together last Tuesday?

I've gone skiing once in my life (in Wisconsin) and I had a really good time, honestly. There was nothing like being the oldest one, by at least 5 years, using the bunny hill  I moved up to the blue diamond and did just fine. The ski lift is a little troublesome for beginners, in terms of getting off it. I fell a couple of times, including once where I had to army crawl to get out of the way of oncoming skiers. But I do have some advice.....do not try the black diamond if you have only been skiing for a couple of hours and can only plow.....bad combination. How I didn't break anything when I fell, I don't know. All I remember is plowing for the first 5 seconds before my skis went parallel and I went....Oh ****!!! Yes, I was the fastest one on the hill, which was cool 😎, but not being able to stop well - sucks. Thankfullly it was a longer run and I had time to formulate an escape plan by just sitting down to stop myself. I was willing to sacrifice myself with the biggest wedgie of my life instead of flying into an empty ditch with rocks at 45 mph. Unfortunately, I didn't get to act out my plan b/c I hit two bumps and went turned into a cloud of snow and ski equipment flying. My one ski went completely across to the other side of the run. Once I stopped tumbling, I remember looking up and seeing the ski lift, where two guys were looking down at me like this --> 😱 and said, "Holy crap dude....are you alright?" I nodded, gathered my things that my cousins brought to me, and limped down the rest of the run, which wasn't too far thankfully. I recovered after a few minutes and continued on my merry way on the blue diamonds. I was asked a couple of times after the fall if I wanted to try the black diamond again and I wanted to say....are you freaking serious???...but I just said no, I don't think so.

That is my skiing contribution to the thread. I still can't go side-to-side or stop without plowing...so maybe I can have one of you guys show me how. I don't mind being the only 27 year old on the bunny hill. I can use the rope lift just fine 😀 Now, my wife, has never been skiing and she suggested we go to Colorado on a skiing trip....I laughed in her face and told her no....try somewhere small first b/c I don't feel like breaking the sound barrier on skis.

I interviewed on last Friday the 15.

Woo Hoo!!!! Congrats HippieChick, DrZoom, gazziza and totemup!!!

I haven't been skiing in YEARS, but want to get back into it badly. It's a lot of fun.

As for the CO suggestion, I totally agree with them. Learning on the smaller/busier/often ICY slopes is harder in my opinion. CO is just AWESOME.

It sounds like the Smokies actually DID get a lot of snow last night and today...it would be very fun to go skiing out there tomorrow if it weren't for the 6 hours of lecture and the upcoming tests.

The result of The East TN Blizzard of 2008 at my house? My yard is GREEN, and needs mowed badly. 🙂

i leave the thread for like a day...and we are back on computers. where is mitch when i need him? please kill the computer banter. please. please. please. as long as you can take notes and get on facebook, what else do you need? dont tell me you are going to do some big time work on this thing, you dont have time for that. facebook and studying - thats it. done. go draw some mustaches on people's facebook pictures or something if you are that bored.

good luck to everyone awaiting phone calls and interviewing, I hope it works out for you

I brought the "side note" computer issue up again. I did so because I had new information to pass on to the new incoming class...since this is their thread after all. I see no problem in talking about new developments that relate to the new class and what they can expect when they get here.

The area around DCOM is really rural and doesn't have a large population.....does anyone know if they have a place to train brazilian jui jitsu? I'd like to keep training in med school.

Ever heard of google? It's this super cool site that gives you answers. 😛

http://www.kbjj.com/kbjj/ This looks like the closest studio.

I'm biting my tongue from now on! 🙄

oh man...lol...that sounds like how I first learned...i had friends who were experienced skiers (since the age of 4) and I started at 10...and what was there way to teach me? yep..send me up to the top of a blue diamond on my first run and watch me go down..all the way..luckily i learned very quick...but that was after 5-10 major wipeouts..luckily I was young and limber..so no major inuries..and once you learn that balance and learn to stop effectively..it is a breeze from there..and a very fun breeze!

recently, i've been getting more and more risky with skiing...and started doing "big air" jumps..and strained my lateral collateral.....do you guys know of any OMM techniques to treat this? Thanks

the small hills tend to be over run, and it makes them icy..but they are also shorter and have flatter bottoms..so it is better for a first timer...this way you can speed down without really worrying about stopping....so make sure you choose a resort that is known for "flat bottoms"

I remember when i first learned...there was a freaking stream/river (10-15 feet across) at the base...and it wasn't even frozen...there was just a plastic fence blocking your way...so if you really lost control and could not stop...you'd probably end up in the river...😱

Thank you very much prions and congratulations to all the others on acceptance!

Ok, first off, more skiers doesnt = icy unless the slope is very steep and people just side slip down it. It actually makes the snow more mushy (think mashed potatoes...). As for the difficulties its:

symbols.gif

So black diamond is hardest, blue square is medium, and a green is easiest. Sorry, it just bugs me. 🙂

As for learning in CO rather than around here? Why spend all that money if you dont even know you will like it? We get decent snow around here and its much, much cheaper to go for a day rather than spend a week in CA or CO or UT trying to learn how to ski. The lessons here are much cheaper too. We just got 8" of fresh snow up in Gatlinburg, and they have been making snow all day, still are actually. So it should add up to around 2 feet of fresh powder for tomorrow. 😀 I cant wait. I have to be up there from Thursday until Sunday. Darn. 😉.

Oh and Nascardoc - What you did is called a yard sale. Cause everything goes. Hahaha!

Congratulations to all the new acceptances!!!!!!!

Oh, and has anyone else received anything about housing? I got a letter in the mail today with all the terms of the agreement and such, and we are not going to be able to stay for just a semester like this year's students did. At least I think some moved out for the second semester, I'm not sure though. Not a big deal, but I'm just wishing we had more/better options I guess.... I'm probably gonna live in the apartments, even though its not exactly what I wanted, but it will do for the first year. I plan on being around over the summer though and helping out with some of the A&P dissections, assuming they let me of course. I dunno..... I might not. It would be nice to have a place and be all moved in and settled though before a new class came in. Plus I could bring my doggie with me that way 🙂.

Oh, and has anyone else received anything about housing?

Awww man! I haven't gotten the letter yet, but that kinda sucks about having to stay the whole year . . . oh well, I think I can deal. 🙄

Yeah I got that letter today too. I will probably end up living the apartments still, I just wish they were bigger! Perhaps they changed it so you had to be there all year because a bunch of people moved out halfway through the year, so then they had a bunch of empty apartments.

Actually, the contracts 2011 students signed was for the whole year too, but if they opted to leave, then they had to pay a fine. I don't remember exactly how much it was though...sorry. So nothing has really changed for you guys.

Rose...I like the yard sale name for the crash 😎 I will remember the blue square too. Can you do me a favor though....can you put a red octagon by the black diamonds next time I go skiing? Perhaps the kind used by Bill Engvall that say "Stupid." That would be a tremendous help 😉

Congratulations to all those accepted. If you're coming to DCOM, join the c/o 2012 Facebook group (and the DCOM facebook group) and add your name to the thread where we are listing acceptances.

ND: That was a hilarious story. I remember my first time skiing quite well, including all of the falls. I was a wimp and took the ski class though, so I learned the importance of the "wedge" early

psst...I took the ski class too 😱 So I'm a wimp and a crappy skier 😳

Hahahaha, .... Here's yer sign! Pizza wedge and french fries are how you ski. Pizza wedge slows you down and french fries make you go fast 🙂.

well it's not just a fine now, in the new contract if you leave you have to pay for the entire year anyhow, and it is billed an a per semester basis ($3500 each semester). So, for all those thinking about student housing, be prepared to commit to the entire year!

Hey, you could pretend that you were in Tahoe by studying thermo as it relates to skiing or snowboarding. I bet you could do some pretty wicked problems and it would feel like you right there with Prions.

Hahaha!

Congratulations to all the new acceptances!!!!!!!

lol..thanks for pointing out my mistake...it is fixed now...I type quickly and hardley ever re-read what i type

and thanks for re-educating me on ski trail signs 😀...I almost forgot 😛

In regards to the ice...I am referring to midwest hills...most have night skiing, so it gets all chopped up during the day and from the sun glaring down..which then freezes as temps drop after sunset...sorry to upset a ski patroller 😉

also re read what i wrote..im not advocating going to CO for your first time...that's contrary to my opinion

BTW...I hope we can gather a whole bunch of us for these skiing excursions next year...it could be a lot of fun!

oh geeeez...
and i have been missing all this skiing talk😀
how's everyone doing...i took a long brake from SDN...but im back:clap:

 That's awesome! I'm heading to Tahoe next weekend, so I'll keep that in mind. 😉 I'm also trying snowboarding for the first time! 😱 Wish me (and my *ss) luck!

As a professional snowboarder... (What? I get paid to snowboard, so that makes me a professional, right? 😎🙄) You should really try to keep your knees bent. Like, the lower you squat, the better off you will be. It will help with your balance, plus it will keep you lower to the ground to you have less to fall. Have you ever played basketball? Turning is kind of like pivoting when you pick up your dribble..... put a little more weight on your front foot and pivot your back foot around so its across the hill, not pointed straight down it. Dont know if that will help, but its a thought 🙂. Also, you will want to lean waaaaay back on your back leg...... dont do that. It puts you off balance, plus you cant turn that way because there is way too much pressure on the back half of your edge. You need to keep your weight even - 50:50. I'm so jealous.... I was in Tahoe about a month ago now. Its so amazingly beautiful and awesome out there.....

Laura - Thermo? Pssshhh, thats easy. Thermo was one of my favorite classes, although heat transfer was one of my most hated. Snowboarding and skiing is like a big fluid dynamics/heat transfer/physics problem though. The bases have wax to break the cohesive and adhesive properties of the snow, but sliding over the snow melts it just a little and causes more friction, but gravity is still pulling you down. So you always go faster on edge since they are metal. What sucks is when they are making snow and temps are marginal so its really sticky cause they have too much water coming out of the snow guns. The extra water really grabs your board. Whats is really funny is watching someone fall in the really sticky snow and not realizing what happened to them, then as you are laughing and boarding by you get yanked down by the same patch of snow right next to them and fall down laughing just as hard. Its good times .

Syncope - Dude.... dont get so defensive. You and MJB were talking about how much easier it was to learn to ski out in CO with "good" snow. Those comments werent directed at you, it was just some information in general. You dont have to explain every single thing you write/say here. I wont get my feelings hurt, I promise...:meanie:
