good luck to everyone else who interviewed feb 9 & 10!!!!

Congrat!!! Happy for you. Move to LMU-DCOM class 2013 thread to join with us.
😀

Congrats jcrew! I received the phone call as well yesterday. I am very excited!!

I am attending LMU DCOM this summer and of course have to take a drug test. I am currently prescribed to a medication that will show up on a ten panel. I spoke with the appropriate person and kind of got a strange answer. He was basically like don't worry about it, as long as you're straight before clinicals it doesn't matter. I can't imagine they can hold it against me if I have a prescription, but just wondering.

Is it a medication you are just taking temporarily? It sounds like he's assuming it is and, therefore, since you currently have a prescription for the drug, it won't be a problem at this point. However, if it's not a temporary situation, you should definitely call back and explain that because if it's medication that can alter your state of awareness, they will not let you go on rotations and potentially endanger your patients.

When I had my drug test done, it was in the middle of my typical battle with spring allergies and I FREAKED OUT when it came back positive for diphenhydramine. The adcom just laughed and said don't worry about it. He's probably assuming it's something like that. I would call back for clarification because it's important to find out now if it's going to be a problem your third year! Good luck to you :xf:

Congrats on getting accepted!

So you both interviewed on the 9-10th? Since you got called yesterday, does that mean that people who interviewed on the 17th and haven't gotten a call should be worried?

yes, I scheduled my physical and everything a few days after I am having my wisdom teeth taken out. I went ahead and rescheduled anyway just because I'd rather just not have to worry about it.

thanks! :soexcited: <---- this was me all day yesterday.

yep, i interviewed on the 9th, so i wouldn't sweat it until next week. however, don't be surprised if you get a call sooner - not sure if they always have a delay like that when they review files. i think dean Stowers was out of town part of the week before i interviewed... that may have had something to do with it. also, on my interview day they specifically told us to remain calm for at least two weeks, possibly four.

amy's super cool with answering neurotic e-mails though, so you can always ask her for an update.

I was just wondering if anyone planning on attending is Muslim? is there an MSA

after you complete the fafsa and get your SAR...do they send it to the school and do you wait for LMU to send you for loan amounts...this is what i thought the process entailed. Anyway, thanks to anyone who responds.. it would save a call to LMU for them to have to explain it to me.

Hmmm, I'm not sure... I was doing all this stuff within like two months, so I'm not a great one to ask, but once you get accepted, and you have completed FAFSA, they send you the form that says this is how much you can take out in loans (and it breaks it down by loan types). Basically, you can take out the whole loan amount regardless of what the FAFSA says (unless you are filthy rich). It has to do with some federal govt mumbo jumbo (as does most things these days, unfortunately). Call Pat Peace at the Fin. Aid office... she's more than happy to field your questions

I am pretty sure that there are a three or four people of the muslim faith here. And I bet the same will hold true in your class.

Thanks for the quick response... I am looking forward to coming to DCOM and maybe you can be on my said yelling roll tide! when they play to vols.. haha.

did any of you interviewing on the 17th got a call yet? I'm getting nervous since I haven't heard from them and it's almost 2 weeks.....how long should I wait before bugging LMU for my status?

I was in your exact position about a month ago. I got a call ten days after my interview on a friday afternoon. Hang in there... you might get a call tomorrow.:xf:

I interviewed on the 17th and received a letter today saying I got put on the waiting list. 🙁 I hope you have better luck than I.

SO depressed right now.

OH, I'm sorry. But don't be too discouraged as you're still wait-listed. You probably have more chances than me as you're from that area....I'm from California.....I'm sure they'll give you an acceptance letter soon as people withdraw and accept other schools. Hang in there!

Thanks for your comforting words. I hope I get a call tomorrow. I just came back from new jersey and haven't looked over my mail....I'm so afraid I'll find a rejection or wait-listed letter........which might still be a good thing so that way I don't have to put in the $2,000 deposit while I'm still waiting to get interviewed from other schools....there's always a bright side to everything....but thanks....I really appreciate your cheerful comments

I'm interviewing in beginning of march, are there still spots open or is the interview for a waitlist spot?

If I remember correctly, they said that they do not give out all the spots right away. They keep some for later in case they needed to give a really great applicant a seat in the later part of the interview process. That could be you so don't stress out about it. I've heard of others who interviewed late in May who still got in so you're definitely a few months earlier than May

do they leave messages in case you don't picked up or they'll just try again later? I have bad reception in the lab (where I worked)

I would wait to hear from one of the second year students about rotations. As a first year, I know nothing but rumors, and those stink. I know this isn't for sure (so I guess this is technically a rumor, but it is fairly solid info...) I'm pretty sure that UTMC - Knoxville made an offer to our school for us to be able to do CORE rotations there, but the offer had to be refused because it was unfair to our students (it cost way more per student than should normally be charged, they would require our students to take the USMLE boards as well as the COMLEX (which you are required to take as an osteopathic student, etc.) UTMC - Knoxville is also looking down the road when the med school in Memphis is going to have to enlarge their classes, so they can't take a whole bunch of students from DCOM now just to say no later. It's kind of a catch 22 for them. HOWEVER... as a third and fourth year student, you can do as many elective and selective roations as you want there, and those are good times to get to know some of the program directors and residents if you wanted to do a residency there. Plus, they might change their minds... you never know.

As to core rotation sites, Knoxville is hospital-saturated. There are 4-5 hospitals for sure that are great hospitals, places I would go to if I needed something done (in fact, I get to test that out here after 1st semester when I have my ACL reconstructed). The doctors are great at each of them, and they will be great teachers.

I'm not sure about Erlanger in Chattanooga. I know they have a relationship with UT - Memphis, but I'm pretty sure they have signed onto our students coming for both CORE and selectives, electives.

Don't worry about the third and fourth year rotations. Our Associate Clinical Dean, Dr. Lenz, is doing a great job and will make sure everybody has a great place to go. Focus on getting in for now... that's the hardest part.

How much competition would there be with residents and students from other schools in Knoxville rotations sites?

I don't think there are medical students from other schools on our rotations... someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I was thinking that's why people are excited about getting so much one-on-one time. 😕

hi guys,
I just wonder if it's possible to bike from school apartment to school everyday since I am trying to save some gas $😀

Thanks

You could... you'd probably get sick of it real fast though! 😛 I live about the same distance from the school in the other direction and I seriously fill up the gas tank like once every 5 weeks. You have to figure if it's a short enough distance that you could bike it, it wouldn't use much gas to drive it! You could always carpool too if you'll be in the apartments.

Thanks for an advice. I have 1 more Q about Financial Aid. Does school have scholarship for us? or we just primarily take the loans? Besides, which loan program is the best for us from the list?
Thanks

There aren't any major scholarships that I know of, aside from joining the military. Most people take out loans. You will probably qualify for some subsidized loans (around $8500), and the rest is unsubsidized (or GradPlus if you need more yet.) I don't know how to advise on who to borrow from. I'm with Chase and have been pretty happy. There was one lender that was having all kinds of problems at the beginning of the school year and was late getting people money, but I can't remember which one it was. You should contact Pat Peace. She's really helpful with this stuff. I just picked the one with no origination fee.

Is anyone interviewing on March 10? Is this really late to be interviewing?? I'm very very very excited to have an interview!!! And I'll definitely be going to the oasis pizza hoopla. Do I still have a good chance at acceptance if I'm OOS and its march? I'd love to go here!! Any advice would be appreciated!

I am interviewing early March also, March 2nd. Good luck on the 10th!

I got my wait-list letter last Friday....very depressing....I really wanted to get into that school and I thought my interview went well....even the interviewers told me that but maybe the school so something that I didn't see.....can anyone help me know what to write in my letter of intent or interest? Also what is my chance of getting off the wait-list considering that I'm out of state?

Be yourself but still be professional.......I think the best interview I had was when I was being myself.....and get lots of sleep

Hey all -

I see that LMU-DCOM uses mediasite to record lectures. Do any of the current students know if the lectures are enabled as podcasts, so students can re-listen to them on their ipod, or other mp3 device? I know mediasite has the capability, just wondering if it is used at LMU-DCOM.

Thanks

In our most recent dean's hour, it was explained that podcasting has been approved. However, at this point it's a matter of implementation.

so i am interviewing march...anyone else? also, any general advice? does interview invite mean strong consideration?

The students at the pizza party the night before mine said that if you're invited to interview at DCOM, it's because they want you. Though you're still up against the class size and the timing in the cycle. It's very worth going to.

Just relax and be yourself. Although every school is said to be friendly and 'they just want to get to know you' in the interviews, I have never seen the level of kindness and encouragement that I was shown at DCOM. That includes the interviewers themselves. I'm a quiet person and still overcoming some shyness. They told me they'd rather go to a quiet, shy doctor who cares for his patients any day than an arrogant, overconfident a-hole.

Check the DCOM admissions welcome page. Everything they say they're looking for on that is pertinent. Be prepared to answer any questions about weaknesses, and to be specific if they ask for it, but don't obsess about it: growing and learning in life means you already answered the question for yourself in the past and you're just telling them what you know. This will take care of all sorts of questions (what will you do differently next time/what will you do if you don't understand material or are in trouble/have you seen something unethical and what did you do about it, etc.) and let you move on to being friendly and interesting and showing your humanity.

Gah, all this news of waitlisting has me nervous about the outcome of my interview already. It makes me wonder how many are actually going to be pulled from it in the long run and how late they wait to notify you...

There is a paved hiking/biking trail that goes from the student apartments to campus through an OLD train tunnel. It's well lit and fairly flat. Well, flat for around here.

Edit: Just a piece of news I heard this week, if you have seen the recent construction on LMU campus, it's a new cell phone tower going in.

I recently interviewed at DCOM and really liked it. Its so strange seeing such state of the art facilities in the middle of a rural area. I know their Adcom meets this thursday, so I hope I get a call soon!

Hi all I will be interviewing March 30th, got the call this AM from Amy. Who else will be there with me?

How long ago did you submit your secondary? Just trying to figure out if/when I might get invited.

Turnover has been super quick. My secondary was in on either Feb 11 or 12. I got called on the 16th for an interview on Mar 2nd. Hope that helps give you an idea of the time frame you might be working with.

Just thought of this though- responses might slowed a little here lately. Dean Stowers has been out of town some and the school has several things going on right now, including an AOA conference and trip to DC for DO on the Hill Day, or something like that. They told us March 2nd interviewees to give it at least 2 weeks before calling and that we should have responses in 2-4 weeks.

I was just wondering if any of the class of 2013 have received their award letter from the financial aid department? I'm not talking about the packet, I'm talking about the letter that states how much we are allotted from each lender. Thanks!

I e-mailed Pat yesterday asking if anything had been sent out since someone has been stealing things from our mailbox 😡 and aside from the generic Financial Aid packet, nothing has been sent out. She said she anticipated award letters being sent in April.

Hope this helps... And darnit, I still need to go get a PO Box.

I recently received an interview date with LMU. Is there anyone out there that has gone through the process and can maybe share his/her interview experience. Can someone hint on what should I expect and the school's atmosphere? This is my first interview so I'm both nervous and excited🙂
