LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi can someone help me out? I filled out the application and printed it out but it printed blank as if I hadn't filled out anything. Should I fill this application out by hand or is there some way that I can get adobe to actually print what I fill in?
When I filled it out, I had to print it out and hand write into it. Perhaps they are using a new app online, but I really think that they will not care if you hand write into a printed out file, as long as it is legible. They are super laid back!

for "professional experience" does that mean real jobs?
I went back and looked at the supplemental app just in case they changed it and only because they include a specific section on the supplemental for volunteer experiences would I say that you should only include job stuff in the professional experiences section. If there is anything that you feel like you accomplished that doesn't fit in those two categories, definitely attach a resume of CV just to make sure everything is covered!

Quick question:

On LMU's Application instructions on their website, it makes it seem as if they want us to send them our MCAT scores (as in, have THX send them the official scores). But, if you go THX, it doesn't list LMU in the "other US medical schools" that you can send your MCAT scores too.

So, I guess they don't want us to send them our MCAT scores separately? I don't see why they would, unless they don't trust AACOMAS (who lists our MCAT scores based on our official score reports) or something.

From what I'm reading on the site, the school just wants all MCAT scores reported. It says that they are normally reported on the AACOMAS application. I don't think that means to send them in again separately.

turning my secondary in tomorrow. hopefully bonus points for following directions haha

i didn't hand write anything. try switching browsers. hopefully you've already figured out a solution though. good luck!

it's been a while but from what i remember i just entered in my scores on the app when asked, and this along with the official AACOMAS/THX score report was sufficient. just wait a week after you send everything in and then e-mail the admin office to make sure your file is complete - Amy and Janette are super helpful and responsive. in general, if they like your completed secondary you will get an invite for an interview within a few days of their receipt of your file.

For those who are uncertain about having your locale held against you, know that DCOM takes students from all over. We have students from WI, FL, CA, NY, MI, TX etc. The school wants students who will be good doctors. Is there preference for students from the area? I think the school looks heavily at students from the are (South/Southeast) but it doesn't mean that no one else is accepted.

I'm not certain of any changes wrt international students. We do currently have int'l students but there may have been recent changes. Definitely get that info from the school if you're int'l and interested in coming here.

:luck:

i was not aware of any changes that would apply to international students - as of last cycle, they were accepting applications. we do have people representing multiple states, but it is informally in their mission statement (as of 2009 MSAR) that they are trying to increase the number of DO's based in the region - TN and immediately surrounding states, specifically in east TN (KY, VA). if you aren't from the area, but are interested in practicing in the area (sincerely, guys), that might help your chances. but they really are just interested in producing good doctors, period. send in your app, cross your fingers, smile during the interview, and take a good look at the school when you visit to make sure it's a good fit for you. good luck!

Does everyone get secondary invite? What's their stat?

Does everyone get secondary invite? What's their stat?
I believe most applicants get a secondary invite since the school advises you to go ahead and send in the secondary after applying with your primary. I'm not sure what you mean exactly with the second question- I assume you mean MCAT/GPA stats? I don't have hard evidence of this from the office of admissions, but the averages ride pretty steady at 25/3.4 from what I have heard. Hope that helps!

do they let you know that you're complete, or no?

do they let you know that you're complete, or no?
I'm not the best person to ask on this one because both times I applied, they called me within a week or so for my interview. However, they are very timely in their e-mail responses so a quick e-mail to Janette will tell you if anything's missing. Anyone else who waited a little while on an interview remember if they received an email notifying you of being complete?

so about a week after you sent your secondary and letters you got a call?

so about a week after you sent your secondary and letters you got a call?
Yes. The first year I think I sent mine in on a Monday and got a call the next Monday or Tuesday, so apparently that first week they were able to evaluate my application. The second year it was about the same, but bear in mind, I had been in constant communication with the admissions staff while revamping my application. I had sent in my secondary well before verified...not sure if that affected anything, but I got the call immediately again. And in case you were wondering, I didn't submit my primary until after classes had started because I was waiting to see if I got pulled off the waitlist. So I wasn't even verified until September sometime. Don't be discouraged though if you don't get called immediately, especially right now. Applications are flooding the admissions office as we speak!

submitted my secondary/letters last week of january, confirmed file complete with the office 4 days later, and got an interview invite 2 days after that. they are pretty quick with response times.

Most communication will be about 1 week behind the documents because they will all get reviewed by the ADCOM who will then make a decision on the document(s). That's why you see the normal delay.

Just got an e-mail from LMU-DCOM inviting to fill out the secondary. I already mailed mine in back on July 7 and sent LORs July 8. Anyone get a confirmation of receipt for their secondary/check cashed yet?

E-mail also says interviews begin Oct 4!.

I haven't heard anything since I sent my secondary.

i called them today to make sure they got all of my stuff. they did. that was the end of the conversation.

the secondary asks to write two short essays. how much did u guys write? i was thinking about 300 words or so.

I had an English teacher in high school who instructed us: An essay should be like a woman's skirt: long enough to cover the topic but short enough to get some attention. I just kept that in mind. : ) I had 503 words for my first essay and 185 for my second. Don't stick to the rubrics of what I or anyone else has, though. Have confidence in yourself. Thoroughly consider what my English teacher said.

Based on that logic your first skirt was conservative, while your second skirt was a skimpy little thing.

Got an email from them saying I was complete and that if I were chosen for an interview, they would let me know late August...

Hate the wait...lol 😎

yeah, i was hoping they were gonna tell me if i had an interview or not in this email.

LECOM is doing great for interviews invites. Not sure why most of the schools wait till Oct for interviews.

It is good for them to conduct the interviews early as they can get high stat students for their classes.

Ehhh... Yes and no, it's good for the cash lots of interviews and lots of deposits from students that might withdraw. Makes the end of the cycle hell though becuase you have all the "confirmed" people for the class withdrawing for other schools which makes the wait list a roller coaster. I guess LECOM just likes nailbiter endings. lol

They should refund part of the ijnitial deposit depending on how many days one take to withdraw after the acceptence. The more time one take to withdraw, the amount refunded should decrease.

under letter of references, are we supposed to check both boxes?

My AACOMAS application has just been confirmed. Do I wait for LMU to send me the Secondary application or is there someplace on their web site that I can get the application?

Someone has posted this link:

http://lmunet.edu/dcom/admissions/process.shtml

I guess you can go there and download the secondary. When did you submit your AACOMAS? I submitted mine last week and still waiting for the verification 🙂

NO, fill it out and send it in ASAP! See mdang87's post - you can obtain the secondary there.

I'm not from Appalachia, and I got in for this past cycle. I did attend undergrad in the Appalachia region though, so I did have a tie to the area.

I was from Arizona and applied here during the last cycle. Tuesday was our first day. The main thing is to show them that you understand that the area is more rural and that you have a plan to deal with that once into practice. As for being a foreign student, there is one girl in our class this year who is from Canada. Make sure that you are good with Homeland Security as that will be a huge concern. Otherwise, make sure to apply. This school has used blind interviews in the past in order to get to know you as a person and what makes you tick. Really know your ethics issues, as I had 5 of those questions during my interview (of course, I have a masters in bioethics though). If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask. I want to help you to succeed and want to see people come to DCOM. They care about students and want you to succeed. Please keep in mind, I am just getting started though and it may take a little bit to get back to you. Best of luck and hope to see you at DCOM!!!!!

They usually will let you know, but sometimes they get busy and/or the email system gets backed up. The best thing is get everything rolling now so that they will have it early. Also don't bombard the admissions staff with emails or phone calls!!! Very important, as they want to see that you can survive without a lot of hand holding. Maybe a single email asking if they can let you know once you are complete. A couple of years ago, they had a girl who kept calling and emailing and she did not get in because she went over the top. I would recommend sending in your secondary via USPS 2-day mail with tracking so you'll know (Get that secondary in before your AACOMAS goes out, this is a great feature of this school, as they don't make you wait for the secondary invite. However, it is a risk with another $50 in fees...make sure you really want this school, but it is awesome in my humble opinion!!). Also, use Interfolio for your recommendation letters if you can, as they usually have those within a couple of days, a week at the most (they download those once a week I think). AACOMAS also has a function to let you know that your app was delivered. Do those little things and that will keep you from having to bug the admissions staff. They will let you know fairly quick.

Some schools will NOT refund any of your deposit. DCOM is one of those. They tell you upfront that you need to make sure that DCOM is where you want to be or you may be out $2,000. Make sure you know the refund policy on the deposit, as well as the deposit(s) required (Touro NV has an initial deposit and then a second deposit in May for a total of like $3,000).

I just mailed mine today, and I didn't include a cv.

Has anyone written their essays yet? It just says to attach two SHORT essays, but there is no specific limit. I wrote less than 1/2 a page each, 12pt Times New Roman, single spaced. I wonder if that was enough.

Try to keep your essays to a page or less. However, make sure to fully answer the question. The main thing is not to send in a thesis. That will definitely turn them off!!

If you are from Arizona why do you live in London KY? That's quite a commute to school.

We relocated to London to better position my wife for a job (she is a teacher) since Middlesboro was losing teachers. Also, I am thinking ahead to 3rd year. One of the core rotation sites is up this way and I would avoid having to move in 2 years.

Hey all. I checked with the admissions dept. today while at school and they said that they will be considering foreign students. However, like other schools, you must have your financial support in the bank and the necessary documentation from Homeland Security. I strongly encourage you to contact the admission folks before applying to find out the specifics. However, you do have a chance!!

Haha was this a result of misreading Tinman's post? The way you asked your question it sounds like you think he drives every week or something from AZ to school. 🙂 However, maybe you meant with the distance of the move he made, why not go all the way to Harrogate? Not important really, just curious lol.

And Tinman, I've got you pegged now! Between FB and SDN, it's hard to remain anonymous once you get to school huh?? Doesn't sounds like you were trying to remain so though. I've had at least 4 or 5 people come up to me and ask me if I am graceeuphoria from SDN lol. I did chop all the long hair off though so I might be throwing some people off. See ya bright and early for speed reading course part deuce!

Yeah I was just wondering why he chose to move to London instead of Harrogate or something closer. If I remember correctly, London is even further than Knoxville. It's been almost 2 years since I have been down there though.

It's been a while since I really looked at the distances of the local cities to Harrogate (hair-uh-get as it is apparently pronounced, lol), but I remember London being a ways away. I don't think it was any further than Knoxville timewise, but I think it might be the highways that slow you down since you aren't on a major interstate. No one quote me on that- it's been some time since I researched the KY area. I just remember thinking it was too far for me to travel. More props to tinman 🙂

Did they really give you guys a speed reading course? Was it mandatory? I have always found speed reading to be more of a hindrance than a help.

They did, and since it was part of orientation it was mandatory. It wasn't too bad. Some of the stuff I found helpful, some not so much. It is what it is.

My AACOMAS application has just been confirmed. Do I wait for LMU to send me the Secondary application or is there someplace on their web site that I can get the application?

Any school you send the AACOMAS to will request a secondary. Its almost a certainty since they will also charge you their price to fill out a secondary regardless of your primary app. When I applied, the secondary app fee was anywhere from 35 to over 100 bux depending on the school. And yes, most of the questions are generically the same such as "Why DO? Why here?" etc. I will say this for DCOM though, after I sent in my secondary, they were the fastest to reply by far. And they're far more organized than the other schools I applied to. So wait for them to ask you to submit a supplemental, fill it out and pay for it and send it in (I recommend certified mail so you know it got here), then wait for the interview. You'll get a phone call if they want you to interview. Hope this helps and best of luck! 👍

Do they send you an email to let you know when they've received your supp. app? I sent mine in about a month ago and no word from them since.

Yes, they e-mail you. I got this e-mail on 7/22 after mailing off my supplemental on 7/7.

.Hello,.
.Your file is complete and will be reviewed by the admissions committee soon. If you are chosen for an interview, we will contact you by phone in late August with available dates. Interviews are conducted October 2010 through April 2011..
.Thank you for your interest in Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine..
