They need to. Dont let them give you a password to do it either, thats a match violation

They don't need Eras account, they need AAMC account to upload it.

For one of my attending, a 75 year old sweet heart who couldn't operate computer, I created the account for him, chose a password for him and uploaded it lol

For the rest they upload themselves or their secretary does

What if you have an old timer who doesn't like computers and said he would write a letter of recommendation but not go online and type it out?

My preceptor is very busy. I'm glad they found the time to write me a letter. It's going to be a PITA getting them to upload it to ERAS.

**** like this is what makes pursing a career in medicine an agony. The studying and the long nights on wards I can deal with, but crap like this gives me ulcers.

What if you have an old timer who doesn't like computers and said he would write a letter of recommendation but not go online and type it out?

hmmm beg them? but yea ask his nurse or other nurses if they can help you with it? Is there a GME department? Ask med student coordinator if they can type it up and upload for him?

Or you can ask if you can type up for him and he can sign it even though you have waived the right to see it? Or maybe find another writer?

I also had a sweet 75yo attending write one of my LORs, and his clinic still uses paper charts!

He managed to get a letter written electronically, create an ERAS account, and upload it himself, so I don't think it is too difficult. He didn't even know what ERAS was.

I did send him several reminders, apologizing that the system was so dang complicated in 2016.

The system is a pain and its ultimately why one of my letter writers gave up on the process. Fortunately I had backups. For some physicians who are busy and would gladly write and mail a letter its a huge inconvenience.

The whole process would be a lot easier if they also gave the letter writer the option to mail it to ERAS for upload the way the AMCAS/Interfolio letters used to work.

I recommend that anyone who had an issue with this indicate it on their ERAS surveys.

It's disappointing. Just to see for myself I logged onto the letter of rec portal as if I was going to submit a letter for someone. All you really have to do is punch in the ERAS letter ID and upload the letter itself. Very easy. I don't see how someone couldn't work their way through it with virtually no motivation at all, let alone when the future of one of your students is potentially on the line. Especially if it's a student you actually like.

In the end, he stopped trying and was going on vacation, I got tired of contacting him, and already had enough letters. This is a guy who likes to mail LORs himself or just give it to the student.

To be honest, I had another letter writer that took a week of back and forth with the AAMC before he was able to get his account set up again to do it. He ultimately uploaded it, but I still hear from him months later about how annoying the whole process was.
