Does anyone know how many LOR we need?

I think typically, it's minimum three, with one from a dentist and one from a science professor?

What if your school wants to write a committee letter? Would it be the committee letter, a science professor, a dentist, a research professor, or another professor?

...basically, my problem is that I don't know who to get letter of recommendations from and how to send them out. I haven't received any LOR yet, but I have three potential dentists I can ask the LOR from.
Two of them confirmed that they would write me a LOR -- Dr. X, who is the dentist I assisted for a few times at a free dental clinic (there were rotations with dentists at the clinic, so I didn't get to really know any one dentist), and Dr. Y, whom is a Navy Dentist and I have yet to shadow since he is in another state but I know him through a friend. Finally, I have not yet ask Dr. Z for a letter of recommendation because I shadowed him for a semester 2 years ago and have not yet kept in contact; however, I did spent the most hours shadowing him as a general dentist. I plan on asking him also. Should I just pick one of them?

I know I need to submit the Committee Letter from my school, so thats 1 LOR, and then I have my microbiology mentor/professor for my independent research project, 3 possible dentists, my general chemistry professor, and maybe from the desk of the free clinic I volunteer at.

I know AADSAS only allows for 4 LOR or 1 Committee letter. (Is that right?) If so, should I submit the rest through Interfolio and would getting 6 additional LOR (other than the committee letter) be overkill? This leads me to another question, how many LOR did you guys get?? And from who, and for what school? Sorry...that was a lot of questions. LOL

So, to sum it up..my questions are:

1. Should I go ahead and send 4-6 LOR to the schools?
2. How many LOR did you submit to each school?
3. Who did you get your LOR from?
4. How did you submit it?
5. How does a committee letter work????!??

HELP!! 🙁
THANKS SDNers....I am so lost at this dental application process....sigh 😕

You should get Dr. Y. He clearly knows you the best 👍.

1) No. You should wait until AADSAS becomes available, although some school do not use the AADSAS system. I assume here that you are applying next cycle, because if you've waited this long in the process...you might as well wait until next go round anyway. AADSAS becomes available around June 1st, you should fill your application out ASAP when it becomes available. Once the AADSAS becomes available...your professors, dentists, etc...can send in their LORs to the AADSAS system.

2) Generally speaking, about three to four LORs will do it. This is where you need to check with individual schools you plan on applying to and see from whom they require LORs. For example, some schools like Loma Linda (religion-affiliated) will require letters from pastors. Other schools want letters from dentists stating what you did when you shadowed them, and so on. This information is available to you on most schools' websites.

3) You need to notify the three/four individuals from whom you plan on obtaining a LOR from well in advance of your date of need. For example, if AADSAS comes up June 1st, you need to let your professors know sometime in late April or early May that you would love for them to have their voice heard and to write you LOR if they would so kindly do so. Be sure and send them a nice card for taking their time to write them as soon as they send them in for you.

4) Above

5) The way we did a committee was sort of unique, and I'm sure all schools do it differently. We had three full-time Biology professors and one for OChem, Gen Chem, and Physics. So, basically you chose the ones you had the best relationships with and those who know you best. This is where students who attend small, private schools (like I did) have the advantage because we get to know our professors really well.

***The process looks intimidating at first, but you can conquer it. Trust me, if I can get it all together, anyone can lol. Also, AADSAS can be quite the pain to work with...so make sure you keep copies of all the documents you send them. There really isn't that much you can do until June 1st (or whatever the first date is) gets here. Best of luck, and if I can help let me know!
