Hi,

I have transferred universities and I did al my science courses at my previous university except for one.

The only class I took here at my new university is Biochem and I had 3 professors for it: 2 for the lecture and one for the lab. Would it be bad if my 3 science letters came from different professors but all the same class?

Now, I could go to my previous institution to try and get some letters but it would be very inconvenient. Also, I don't really know if I could get good letters from my professors there. For Biology, my professor did really want to talk to me ever (because I'm a guy). For all of my chem classes I had the same professor that knows me very well. The problem is that I don't think he'd write a good letter, he's fresh out of africa and in his lecture notes there were tons of mistakes everywhere. I think it would pretty risky.

Also, I am planning to apply to basically all the Canadian Friendly, big expensive private schools and from what I've gathered you can only upload 4 letters onto the application service so do you think that letters from 3 biochem professors and a dentist would satisfy the majority of requirements or should I go 2 biochem, 1 pychology 1 dentist?

What do you guys think?

thanks!

The first paragraph I quoted I think is important. It sounds like you already know those would be a bad choice for letter writers. As for inconvenience, I was in a similar situation as you, but had no choice but to seek out letters from past institutions, this was a pretty awful experience as I couldn't see any of them vis-a-vis, and in the end two of them sent there letters very late even though I contacted them relatively early. (This resulted in my application being put on hold at many schools until they received all the letters)

There should be no problem with what you're considering doing, as long as the biochem professors will write you good letters and have them in on time. Your grades from your previous sciences will speak for you in that regard (testifying to your ability to do well in other sciences without having a diverse set of science LORs).

I like your idea of 2 biochem, 1 psych, and 1 dentist best. However I would make sure none of the schools you're applying to requires 3 hard science letters specifically... that was a problem for me regarding Columbia alone. I believe that if you do run into a problem with this, you will be able to have sent to the school directly another LOR from (for example) your 3rd biochem professor, outside of AADSAS.

I dont know if it is a must but it would be great to have LORs from different professors that have taught you different courses ! Taking 3 LOR from 3 BCEM profs who taught the same thing over 1 semester is just not ideal since they all will mention how they know you= dental schools will see you lacked having a diverse group of references. After 3-4 years of undergrad you should be familiar with more than 3 profs!! Your call IMO.

Thanks for the input!

Yeah I know, but I transferred schools and even with that I've only had a total of 5 Science professors in my 3 years, 2 from BCEM and 1 from my 2 bios, my 2 physics and my 4 chems. I know my chem prof very well but he's not a letter writer like I said. I also know my bio and physics profs very well too... I've actually travelled overseas with them, but I also don't see them as either wanting to write me a letter or being capable of writing a good letter.
