Low GPA Success Stories

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got my first acceptance last week! I have a 3.0 sGPA and a 3.2 cGPA and a 504 MCAT. I am also currently a 2nd year grad student in public health with lots of EC/Research and volunteer hours. You can definitely do it 🙂
wow nice thats awesome! congrats! which school did you get accepted to?

I too am stressing out. I have a 2.98 undergraduate GPA, 3.0 SMP GPA, 30 MCAT (3 years old), 196 hours of shadowing, as well as extracurriculars that make me more well-rounded. I've been an emergency room scribe (work with MD's and DO's ) for two years (reached 2000 hours recently).

But I'm very afraid that those two GPA numbers will prevent me from getting anywhere.

I never post this, but I have one acceptance (DO), and two interviews (one DO, one MD) in the next month. I had a 497 mcat and a 3.3 science gpa. My application is really strong in certain areas and obviously weak in some. Your application is about balance. While there might be statistical backing to acceptance by mcat and gpa, if you work hard to make yourself a balanced applicant, you will have zero problems. Don't make getting into Med school a "stressor", and just make sure to fill in areas that you know you're weak before you apply.

Congratulations!

what do you think my chances are GPA/sGPA 2.9, MCAT 518 (Jan 2017). Rest of the profile is well-rounded, including research, Seeing lots of schools saying minimum GPA is 3 or 3.2 or ..... Do they actually prefilter using the numbers before they see the whole profile?

Yes, a lot of times it is just a computer filter. You could probably get into a newer school but you can do better with that MCAT. You might be a good SMP candidate.

Years ago I would look at threads like these, whimsically thinking one day I would be able to post a success story. I was (still am) a very average to below average student. Always read other peoples "comeback" story, and the months would go by without seeing any semblance of success, which was in large part to my own laziness and losing belief in my own capabilities. I remember the despair of looking down the barrel of unemployment, lost dreams.
In undergrad my GPA was probably 3.2 overall and maybe around 3.0 science. Average MCAT.
After doing an SMP, I somehow got accepted to an excellent DO school. Did well on my boards, have published research, applying to a competitive residency (who knows where that will go).

Sending my love to all of you underdogs. Stay scrappy. Make connections. Keep the humility wherever you go. You should study HARD until you can no longer study, and then you should study some more.
