any friends who had a low GPA got into dental school in the previous year? when i say low, i mean below 3.0

it's possible. very very hard. so hard it seems downright impossible. but possible. you just have to be very very good in the other parts of your application, and even then don't bank on it as most schools will have some kind of cutoff point that automatically tosses out applications based on GPA without ever taking a look.

Get above a 20 DAT score and take graduate courses. If you search on this forum, you will find Yahee(forgot spelling) made it in. He scored above 20s across the boards and took some graduate level courses though.

Or you could look at schools like NYU that had a 3.01 SGPA average last year, and if my memory serves me correctly, an "average" means that half their class were above a 3.01 and the other HALF were BELOW 3.01, so technically you should apply their for your greatest chance...of course getting 20's+ would definitely help.

i will disagree with vegas for the block...

my friend is a 1st year at NYU and he said the average overall and science GPAs for his class of 2009 were between 3.3 and 3.4 so don't expect < 3.0 to cut it anymore

also, i believe the stats cited by dental schools are means (average) not medians (half above, half below) but who knows, maybe it's mode!

Sure. I know some who got in GOOD schools with low cum. GPA (<3.0, even with some F's), but they did take additional science classes and did well in them.. and they had kick-ass DAT scores (22+).

But it's becoming increasingly difficult these 2 years because it's so competitive... so they are looking more for a total package since they have so many more choices.

its still possible for sure..you just have to apply at the right schools..have a 21+ AA and a strong application. Also..its obviously a big difference if you have a 2.81 overall gpa as opposed to say a 2.97 science gpa..so <3.0 could mean a lot of diff scenarios..id say the worst is having an overall below 2.9..then you're really in some trouble.

I think a few years ago a fair amount of students with sub 3.0 GPAs got into dental school but with the increase in applicants over the past few years, the most affected students are the under 3.0 people.

Many schools are talking about having 2000-3000 applicants so more schools look at that 3.0 cutoff. I think even the private schools like NYU have to be more selective because their class size has been decreased but applicants increased.

This makes it extra tough for people like me. On my AADSAS application my science and overall GPAs are listed at 2.8. I have improved my science to 3.0 but the grades won't be updated until January.

I have a 26 DAT and two degrees and so far only one interview. I don't mean to scare you but the number of sub 3.0 acceptances is going to continue to decrease. Personally I think even getting a 2.9 to a 3.0 is a big deal because at least it doesn't get a rejection right away. For example Loma Linda sent me a rejection 2 days after they got my app, their loss I guess.

I know many people who had really bad GPAs even as low as 2.5, who got 23s and above on the DATs and got into schools like UOP. However I still haven't heard back from them so I can only assume they are weighing GPA more heavily than before as well.

Thats called median. The whole class could have entered with a 3.01 GPA (no one below 3.01). But thats just nit-picking.

Bottom line is you are going to have to work hard. If you don't work hard during undergraduate it will catch up to you. Im not going to speculate as to why you are getting below 3.0 if you wanted to get into dental school, but I suggest you look into a masters program and do well to increase your chances. You should pick something that may benefit your future so that it is not a total waste of time.

Good luck

what is a stanford student got a 2.9, does it make a difference ? i mean, the average of nyu and BU is around 3.0..that's means some people who got in must be lower than a 3, right?
