Hi, I took pre-calculus last semester and i received a C-.. I was really upset at myself and mostly my teacher was who horrible. I am really worried that my chances getting into pharm school is really low now.. My GPA is around a 3.5 but it was much higher before i got that C-. I am planning on taking Calculus and hopefully getting an A. Do you think i should retake pre-calc or leave it alone.. so worried :scared:

Leave it alone, take a deep breath, and move forward to next term and ace the hell out of Calculus. A 3.5 is perfectly acceptable, and it'll be higher by the time you finished the series.

You'll be fine.

hmm yea.. i'm just scared that it will really ruin my chances, since many people have been telling me that a C in any course lowers your chances uh

They're very wrong.

I mean, "lowers your chances" is such a nebulous thing to say, isn't it?

People get into every pharmacy school in the country with a couple of Cs on their transcript, some with Ws, Ds, and Fs.

Don't worry about it, HONESTLY.

Are you even allowed to advance to calculus if you got a C- in precalculus? That is, is a C- a passing grade at your school?

I think there is some value in getting less than an optimal grade. It will teach you how to deal with situations where things go wrong and nobody manages to go through life without things going wrong. So are you going to fall apart over this and worry yourself to death or are you going to put it behind you and get the rest of your application in tip top shape?

Remember to put things in perspective. This is one grade out of many and you are judged on a variety of factors besides GPA. You have so many other chances to shine if you take advantage of them.

Most pharmacy schools don't explicitly require pre-calc, right? Just get an A in calc. Now, if you got a C- because you don't get it, you might be looking at a bigger problem, and should get a tutor. But the C- is not a huge concern because it isn't a direct pre-req.

It took me three attempts to find a good calc teacher (dropped the first two semesters because one couldn't speak English well and the other simply hated life). My suggestions: review teachers on ratemyprofessor.com, myspace teacher rating, and pickaprof.com. <-- highly recommended if your school is listed.

As for the C- question, I doubt that a non-prereq class would strongly affect your chances, especially with a 3.5. Just continue on, and if your schedule allows for it, you could retake it in the future. If you are applying to a California school, then you probably should retake it because they are pretty cutthroat from what I hear anyway. Good luck!

WF in macroeconomics - It was dual enrollment and I was uninterested...

You'll be fine - Make sure you evaluate what you could have done to get a better grade. Then take those changes and put them into place. The above stated recommendations are all sound.

This is true. People can get into pharmacy school with Cs, Ds, Fs, and Ws. I'm living proof of that.

The bottom line here is a C- or two won't kill your chances to getting accepted to pharmacy school if the majority of your grades are excellent. (It looks like this is the case for you since you have a 3.5 GPA)

If you feel unprepared for Calculus or didn't think you learned much from your pre-calculus class, I would retake the class with another professor. Look on www.ratemyprofessor.com

IMO, since knowledge learned in math builds upon itself, I would make sure to learn Pre-calculus well before proceeding to Calculus.

personally, if I were you, I would re-take the pre-calc. Calc uses things from pre-calc, obviously, so if you didn't understand certain things in that class than you should try to learn it better for the next time around. Try to get a better teacher if possible, because then you can improve your chances for a better grade.. Also, doing extra problems helps a ton.
