I thought I would take the initiative to start this thread, as it's my IS and I don't really see any other Louisianians around here.

Hopefully I meet some of you guys here and maybe eventually, we will all meet in Baton Rouge :hello:

I'm considering re-applying this year. They kicked me in the teeth pretty hard last year. I'm OOS so not sure if I've been able to fix enough to make the cut this time around.

I'm worried about getting kicked in the teeth as well since my prereq GPA is on the lower side... Like 3.4. My last 45 is great and I have a tremendous upward trend though, so maybe if I rock the GRE and stay involved in EC's they will take a chance on me! In state status will help too. Good luck!

Hello all 🙂 Does anyone know how heavily LSU weighs the GRE? My scores are pretty good but my lower GPA has me considering retaking it :| But if they don't weigh it very heavily I don't want to waste the time since I'm currently packing up life and moving to Baton Rouge in a few months.
Good luck to all applicants this cycle!

edit: never mind, it was staring at me from the website

Seriously considering LSU, but my stats need a little love, and there aren't a lot of out of state acceptances. So LSU may get the ax after I go through all the schools I can apply to as far as prerequisites go.

I'll be going into 3rd year this fall, and there are a couple more of us at LSU lurking around here somewhere! I visit SDN rather sporadically, but I'll try to answer any questions when I see them. Feel free to PM me as well. 🙂

Is anyone else wondering about the 10 or so e-mails we've received about directions? It makes me wonder if people are super struggling with LSU's application this year.

It's definitely due to the fact that there is a link (in one of the emails) that gives deadlines for LSU that were last year. Last year, VMCAS was due in October. Now, it's due in September. If people are only applying IS and that's the only thing they look at, I could see it being a problem. All in all, love how helpful Jared Granier is and how he keeps in touch with us!

No kidding!! That sort of helpfulness is awesome!! It's just kind of blown me away.

LSU was my undergrad, so applying was a no-brainer, but I almost have the least amount of faith that I'll get in there over the others I'm applying to.

I'm here. LSU SVM in-state and applied to CSU DVM as OOS this year. I've done a lot of work over the past few years and raised my GPA significantly. Hopefully this is the year I get in (4th time)

Anyone logged into status check yet? I love the system.

Every single day.... I'm pretty much dreading seeing my GPA calculations at the bottom, my VMCAS just got verified today

same!! When did you submit your VMCAS?

9/1, this is not going to be fun. I wish I could just leave it alone and check it again in December but that will definitely not be happening

@rockatiel you'll love the system until they update and let it sit there while they evaluate applications. Also, kind of a disappointment when they update it with whether or not you get an interview or been kicked out of the pool and there is no actual email, just a status change and "Please apply next year."

Sorry, lots of cynicism and frustration on my end. You have to remember, in-state applications get sent out not only to the committee, but to area veterinarians who sign up to evaluate them as well. I've always wondered if you've potentially worked somewhere and someone isn't fond of that vet or an evaluation by a collegue if that impacts your application.

How many of us are on here this year?

Thanks for the advanced warning! I'm from North Louisiana, so I'm hoping that doesn't happen to me. Hope to see you in the class of 2020!

Me too. With 16 years of experience and considering I work at a surgical referral hospital where I'm head of surgery, I'm more than ready. I can help teach y'all some good tech skills 🙂

Another LSU applicant here! I'm at LSU right now for undergrad, and I have no desire to move OOS, so this is the only school I'm applying for. According to their status check, they have all my stuff, so now the waiting game begins... I've got the academics/experience, so I'm cautiously hopeful! And I'm just fine on tech skills.

Good luck to you guys!

CSU does that too. They send you an e-mail saying, "CHECK UR PORTAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and then you check it and it says, "Sorry, no can do. Better luck next time." :meh:

I'm from Colorado and also applied to CSU. I applied to seven OOS schools, and LSU is honestly at the low end of my list just cause I don't know if my last 45 will be good enough. But I'd be willing to go if offered a spot!

So I kind of forgot my processing fee.. Well not really. I hate writing checks. Anyways, I only live 3 hours north of BR, so it's not a big deal. I had it overnighted through UPS to be safe. It's guaranteed to get there by 3 PM tomorrow. The man at the shipping outlet told me they ship to that address all the time for vets, doctors, and other students, which made me feel better about it getting there.

Applying for the second time. During my meeting with Jared in May, all the comments from the admissions committee seemed to focus on my lack of hands on clinical experience - I had worked in a shelter for 3 1/2 years, but was in adoptions and admin. I've since moved to our clinic and with letters of recommendations from two vets, a lead tech, and the clinic director, I'm feeling really good about my chances this time around.

The fact that I have no clinical experience (other than shadowing in 2009/2010, which I just decided to add to my VMCAS) really worries me. I've been trying since April to get an assistant/tech job, but lately there have been few clinic openings in my area (mostly for receptionists and LVTs). Of the several I've interviewed, most seemed interested or offered me another position, but then never called back when they said they would (please, I'd much rather be told "sorry, we chose someone else" than be left hanging).
A few places straight up told me during interview "oh, but you say you're applying to vet school, so you might only be around for a year and we're looking for someone more long-term"--even though I explained many times how unlikely it is I'd get accepted on the first attempt. It was so messed up, you'd think being a serious vet school applicant would help your case, not hurt it.

Actually the one place that treated me well was--an adoption/admin position at a cat shelter. (they offered it after I sent resume trying to apply as a tech which was already filled) They kept constant contact with me and even called me back for a second interview. Ultimately they explained that they finally decided on another applicant because they knew I was really in need of a clinical position. I was told their new mobile vet service would be starting in Aug/Sept and to keep a lookout for it to apply but I haven't heard anything as of yet.

Sorry for that tangent, job searching is frustrating

Reception is usually veterinary experience, fyi. As long as you are supervised by a veterinarian, it's considered veterinary. Assistant positions will get you more hands on experience, but reception is a great place to start!

Okay, that's good to know! So a kennel tech position would fall under this as well? (a VCA offered me that as a way to get my foot in the door, since they're an emergency clinic and I wasn't quite experienced enough for their more advanced needs, but again they never contacted me further...)

The best scenario would be to work at a nearby mixed clinic (either for my hometown vet who I shadowed, another one I know in a neighboring town, or one of the clinics here where I'm attending classes) but none of them have openings. My mom suggested I "volunteer" for one of them, but isn't doing actual non-intern work for a business unpaid...illegal? I was hoping to start earning money, but with the lack of new job postings for the entire area I may have to start contacting clinics about any shadowing opportunities.

The VMCAS definition of veterinary experience is "veterinary clinical, agribusiness, or health science experiences which took place under the supervision of a veterinarian." It doesn't define specific job roles other than saying "clinical." With that being said, it's also dependent on the hospital you work at. Say you work in a huge hospital with a large kennel, grooming, etc. You may or may not have a veterinarian as your direct boss or even come into regular contact with one. At smaller hospitals, veterinarians oversee everything, do hiring, etc. That kennel tech position may or may not be veterinary. It may fall under VMCAS' definition of veterinary, but it also doesn't mean you'll actually get decent clinical experience. That's where the 'quality over quantity' of hours comes into play. 100 hours as a groomer/kennel attendent does not always equal 100 hours as a tech/veterinary assistant. It really depends on the hospital.

There was a discussion on the legalities of shadowing/volunteer a few days ago and there have been a few throughout the past few years I've been on SDN if you want to search for those. My take on it: shadowing/volunteering can be very great experience, given you find the right hospital/team. If things get to the point where you're clearly being taken advantage of (you're not learning and are just cleaning all the time), I say move on. Just give yourself a decent amount of time at the position so the staff can get to know you and allow you to participate more as they get more comfortable around you.

Earning money is always ideal, but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way 🙁 If you're not having any luck with clinics, look into wildlife rehab places (preferably ones with a vet on staff), shelters, etc.

When I shadowed back in '09-10, it was a nice experience--the vet presented a lot of opportunities for me to get an up-close look at procedures like spays (and wrote me a great LOR, too bad I couldn't get back in touch working with him again in time to get a new one for VMCAS), while the techs demonstrated how things like snap tests work. When I did "work", it was only minimal cleaning like wiping counters or taking out trash. I would be comfortable shadowing like that (with the occasional hands-on since I'm no longer a high schooler)--I am just concerned about the idea of full-on "volunteering" for a private practice clinic, alongside paid techs.

I've actually done a lot of volunteering in wildlife rehab! Other than livestock/animal science related activities it's my main source of animal experience from my time at LSU. None under a veterinarian though, unfortunately, just licensed rehabbers and vet students. Don't know what's available in the way of that around here--have been looking into the aquarium but their only internships are for current vet students.

DUDE. DONT TELL THEM IN AN INTERVIEW THAT YOU MAY BE LEAVING FOR VET SCHOOL SOON. Until they hire you, they don't need to know that information. Just say you are interested in pursuing vet school in the future. END.

Until you are accepted and it's two weeks before you leave, they are not entitled to know your plans.

I didn't though! I would only mention along with my undergrad degree/experiences that I was currently "preparing to apply for vet school" (it's only my first attempt), with the main point being that I'm in need of clinical experience to achieve that end, but some of them apparently took that to mean "so you're getting into vet school and will be gone by next year." Despite my constant assurance that it's highly unlikely I'll get in anywhere this year. 🙁 Like I said, I only mentioned this with the intention of helping my case (showing that I was serious about and prepared for the job). Guess I shouldn't even bring up the "applying/applied" part anymore unless it's for a temporary shadowing thing.

YUP. I personally think that saying you want more experience for an application makes it sound like you just need it to put it on a piece of paper rather than wanting the job.

Also, saying you may be interested in tech school down the road was a big help in my interview in ER. It was a little bit devious, but not entirely... If I don't get into vet school, my plans may change.

In any case, I would not mention any sort of time line in your life, whether it be vet school application or moving next summer. Also, mentioning vet school can be a negative for new hires who are employed to clean up ****. Because what doctor wants to do that? Next interview, say that you want to work there because you love animals and want to help make a difference for them, not that you need experience for an application.

I'll step off my soap box now.

I am UG at LSU and work at the SVM doing research. I work with a lot of the vet students and you can definitely tell that LSU looked MOSTLY at academic standing. A lot of these people are highly intelligent, yet have NO people skills what-so-ever. This is unfortunate since this is my IS. I would love to attend because I have come to know and love a lot of faculty and staff but I just don't see myself being able to compete with the high academic standards in their 80-90 person classes. 🙁

FYI: The vet school Open House will be later than usual this year - February 20. This is relevant to y'all because the OOS interviews are usually held on Open House day, and IS interviews are typically spread over several days in the week or so before.

http://www.lsu.edu/vetmed/events/open_house/index.php

Regardless if you're IS or OOS, or if you applied this year or not, I recommend coming to Open House if you can! It is an excellent showcase of all the vet school has to offer, and many of the community animal-related groups come as well (shelters, the zoo, etc.) And I'm not saying the Wildlife Avian Exotics & Zoo Medicine Club room and the Wildlife Hospital's raptor rehab room are the best rooms at Open House but... wait no I am saying that. They are the best. 😀 #biased

That's awesome to know. If that ends up being the interview day, it would make my life a lot easier if I got an interview.

My academic history can most politely be described as "messy". 😉 I had far ... like REALLY FAR ... from a perfect academic record when I was accepted. It's definitely easier to get accepted to any school if you have an impeccable GPA/GRE, but LSU does also give acceptances to those of us who were imperfect now and then. Having pre-vet research experience is very uncommon, will set your app apart, and will continue to help you post-DVM if you apply for internships/residencies. And you can possibly get letters of recommendation from the faculty/staff you've worked with! That is even more rare. I can't speak for the admissions committee, but if it were me, I'd place a lot of trust in a recommendation from someone I knew and worked with.

I apologize for the lack of people skills you've encountered! I know my ability to function like a normal human being takes a nosedive when I'm stressed and/or sleep-deprived (which is basically all the time..), and that often results in being short-tempered with a difficulty forming complete sentences. Hoping that was the case with the people you've worked with. If not, and that was their normal personality, that means they were known jerks and trust me, no one else likes them either. 👎

Just realized that in my years at LSU undergrad I never attended nor volunteered at the Open House :smack: bad me! My only experiences at the SVM itself were Spay Days/one raptor rehab day, pre-vet club and a small ruminants class.

I'm not sure how much of this I'd chalk up to academic standing. They're vet students and probably quite nervous about being in a research lab. They have superiors to impress, as do you. I'm not a 3.8, 325 GRE student by any means and I know that when I'm nervous or tired, my people skills tend to flounder. Just a thought. Your outlook is a little pessimistic and it won't help you!

Why so late?! Status check says that IS interviews will be Feb 2nd and 3rd, and OOS/Arkansas earlier than that!

OOS interviews are on the 31st according to the portal

they FINALLY updated my status/entered coursework on the portal!
I just need to submit the info that I will be taking Physics II in the spring, that's their only prereq I'm missing.

My last 45 is abysmal though, way lower than my cumulative 🙁 it's 3.12!
I never calculated it myself and didn't expect it to be that low...I guess it's still including my bad second-to-last undergrad semester where I had a medical issue and failed biochem, and that last year's post-bacc classes haven't helped bring it up much since they were Bs and not As...while I have an overall upward trend in my undergrad coursework (minus said bad fluke semester), that last 45 being so low makes me look terrible...

and my required course/prereq GPA is 3.39 (aargh, so close to 3.4!) I hope getting an A in my in-progress bio class and whatever I get in Ochem lab/phys II in the spring will help nudge those up! nevermind I just saw that fall '15 grades are not factored into the GPA 🙁 for next attempt, I guess...

Just checked my portal and nothing for me yet. -_-

When did you submit?

Does anyone know if LSU does any early interviews?

My portal has been updated. Definitely glad that LSU was number 8 out of 8 on my list as both GPAs were lower than I calculated them to be. Much lower. They also definitely said I'm missing English Composition even though I transferred those credits in through AP testing. So definitely just e-mailed them about the missing credits.

No update for me and I submitted and was verified a smidge earlier... Hmm I guess today we will see.

Still nothing and they updated 10 minutes ago 🙁

Ahh, that sucks, mine finally updated with the courses I'll be taking in the spring after I emailed the info a couple days ago (no more "missing prerequisites" alert!)
