lying to dean

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why lie in the first place? I'd better hope your advisor and the dean never cross paths...and I sure hope your advisor didn't suggest that you lie to the dean.

Good luck.

Hey If I lied to the dean about extinuating circumastances in order to get a late W would I get in a lot of trouble, especially since i admitted to my advisor who is premed that there arent any?

What is the class? Spelling?

Sounds like a real bad idea. I would take whatever grade you got coming. Hopefully it is just a C.

You can recover from a bad grade, even an F. If you get busted lying about you can kiss med school and probably your college degree goodbye.

i don't really know what's going on here, but i'll offer some general advice.

the few times in my life that i have done something dumb and lied to cover, i have gotten caught in the lie and the consequences were worse than if i had just accepted my stupidity and moved on. whatever you did coursewise, i think you should just suck it up and try to do better next time.

Nope ... lie, cheat, do whatever it takes to become a doctor, I think that's basically the philosophy.

That's horrible, no you shouldn't lie. It's wrong on too many levels to break down.

Your pre-med adviser has to write you a pretty important letter of recommendation for medical school. You better hope to god he does not find out you lied because a bad letter from him/her could really screw you.

I guarantee you bad things will happen if someone finds out. That is academic dishonesty. You have the option of coming clean to the dean. One bad grade won't keep you out of med school.

Indeed. Academic dishonesty might get you booted from college, so you can kiss your dreams of med school goodbye. Getting even an F is not the end of the world-you can recover from that.

I don't think getting a W in lieu of a letter grade is worth compromising your integrity.

Here's what you need to do. You need to make an appointment with the dean, and tell them that you lied when you told them about the "circumstances." Say you want to make it right and accept the grade you would have gotten without the W. Very, very good chance that the dean will appreciate your honesty and get the grade changed to what it should be without putting some sort of black mark in your record. You have to do this if you want to avoid screwing up your future academic and professional life. It won't be as bad as you think it will be. And when you walk out of the dean's office, you will feel such relief that you don't have to worry about this anymore.

👍

It is also better to do this sooner than later. Coming clean is a good sign of integrity, and owning up to mistakes shows a great deal of character. The longer you wait, the more you need to lie to cover up the lies, and the end result is a vicious cycle.

Good luck.

Mistakes happen. You can correct this one. Do it. Worst case, IF it comes up;
its something you can talk about as defing you and a moment of growth.

I'm kind of curious, what was the lie?
