I became certified by ACSM as an Exercise Physiologist in 2017 & it expires by the end of the year if I don't have the set number of continuing ed credits. However, I begin PT school in June. Is it worth it to pay for the continuing ed classes in order to maintain my certification? Will this certification even matter once I become a licensed PT? Any feedback is welcomed, thanks.

I am an ACSM EP-C as well, and from what I can tell, it won't make a difference once you become a licensed PT. I know I plan on letting my certification expire. It was great for getting jobs before PT school, but I made much less money with that certification than I will with my PT licence. A doctorate in physical therapy goes above and beyond it in terms of amount of education and experience, that I can't imagine anyone would care about that certificate when you also have a doctorate. (All just my opinion though.)

Some classes such as anatomy can count towards your continued credits, if you wanna get the re certification and not do those little CEU tests

My thoughts exactly. Thank you!

I didn’t know that. I’ll look into that option. Not really interested in paying for CEU’s for this certification so if I have to then I’ll let it expire. Thanks!

If it expires will it be hard to get it back if you want it again? It could potentially be something to help you stand out from the crowd as a new grad, so if it would be difficult to reacquire, I would try to keep it.

Yes, I would have to pay for the exam at full price & possibly go back to review some of the material covered on the exam. When I took it, it was offered at discounted price through my undergraduate program. So that's definitely something for me to think about as well. Thank you!

I had a couple of certs (NASM and Chek) that accepted my UG exercise science credits 100% cover my CEUs, I just had to send them transcripts. Find out what your options are from ACSM.

The only cert I'm going to keep is my CSCS. Otherwise, I'm just going to let my other ones expire. It just starts to cost a lot of money with all the fees and everything.

UPDATE:
like others have mentioned above, I confirmed & I am able to use my coursework from my first & second semester of PT school for CEC's. with being able to use those, I have more than enough to qualify for re-certification. there is a $55 fee to recertify, again do y'all think it is worth it?

For only $55? Absolutely.

Better to keep it than be like oh crap.....
