Do dental schools really not care what you major in as long as you have a competitive major GPA and science requirement GPA? Also, other than genchem, gen bio, genetics, gen physics, orgo, calculus, are there any more science/math classes that I have to take? Thanks!

it all depends on the school.

ex. Tufts requires Biochem course, UCLA requires Psychology, Harvard requires a full year of Calculus, while most other schools are ok with 1semester or 2 quarter calc and 1 quarter or semester of statistics.

check out the websites of the schools you want to apply, their reqs are listed on the Admissions page.

good luck.

Thanks! I've already asked this but, do dental schools really not care what you major in? Cuz, I was planning on majoring in chem but i changed my mind and thinking about psy and soc double.. (i'm a freshman btw) Thanks again!!

i think having a science major helps. the more science classes you take, the more prepared you will be for dental school and they'll take that into consideration. i think they do try to have a variety of majors within their classes, but i think you are at a disadvantage if you arent a science major.

on the other hand, your gpa will probably be higher if you are a psych or soc major.

major in something you absolutely would love. if you like art, then major in that. don't feel like you have to be a science major just because you want to go to dental/med school. just make sure you take all the prereqs and some of the recommended courses. for example, major in history and minor in chemistry.

i think if you major in something other than science (and take all the prereqs and some upper level classes), you will stand out to adcoms. it shows that you can be good at other things besides science (that is if you actually do good in all your classes). also, whenever you meet someone new, you would always have something to interesting to talk about. you'll have four years to specialize in becoming a dentist in dental school. so right now, i think you should focus on getting as much knowledge as you can get about the world around you.

Thanks so much for replies.

I was going to major in chem b/c i thought science majors are what dental schools reallly wanted to see. But then I see these all kinds of majors, including art history, music, etc. who get admitted to dental schools and i changed my mind. Why do science for 4 years and go to dental school to do another 4yrs. of science? Umm.. I see how it can be helpful at the end since it would be kinda like a review, but I think I'll like psych major and maybe soc minor better.

So, Is it more advantageous to take RECOMMENDED courses? If schools don't require, say, anatomy course but they recommend it, does it make a difference whether or not I take anatomy class? In other words, majoring non-science course and taking minimum requirements (gen chem, orgo, genbio, gen phys, calc, biochem) will not be impressive?

Thanks again!
