Hello, Since my chances of getting into Canadian dental schools are very very slim to being zero and I wont waste time pursuing it but I have decided a dental hygienist is the second best to it. I have applied to a private school that is accredited, did the entry examination and got in. I have heard quite abit online and from female hygienists that it is difficult for a male to get a job after you get your diploma (I have my B.S.C in life science from University of Toronto). I was wondering what are your intakes? I have already paid 1k to get in which starts in a month but my concern is will it be very hard to find a dental hygienist job?

Please help me on your views as I don't know what to do, only issue I have is the employment after, I don't wanna waste 41k for dental hygiene diploma that wont guarantee me a job after.

i honestly dont have any statistical evidence to show u that males dont have a disadvantage in the dental hygienist workforce, but im just thinking why a dentist would prefer hiring a female over a male? Many dentists have male hygienists and i dont see the issue with it. As long u do ur job well u should be fine is what i think. Btw congratz on ur acceptance, and good luck!

My office has a male hygienist. It doesn't matter.

Personally, I don’t see any problem with having a male hygienist but... I worked for several dental offices and both of my dentists hired only female hygienists. Every time I received a resume from a male, I was told to trash it. The office manager from one of the offices actually told me that he’s pursuing dental school because it would be too difficult for him to get hired as a hygienist. (I’m from southern CA)

Dont sell yourself short. If you want to go to dental school then shoot your shot brother

I’ve heard male solo practice dentists prefer female hygienists. However, with the increasing amount of corporate dental offices opening, as long as you are willing to move or work at a corporate office you won’t have a problem as a male hygienist.

If you really want to be a dentist you should give it a shot. Score high enough on the DAT and do a masters if needed.

If you do decide to do hygiene school - ace everything so you can apply to dental school in the future if you want to.

Where do you plan on working in Canada?

I don’t think that being a male will be a huge disadvantage. But research the job markets in different parts of the country. Southern Ontario, for example, is pretty saturated with hygienists due to all the private schools. Be prepared to work after graduation as a mix hygienist/assistant/receptionist.

20 years ago hygienists at my office were making $30+/hour to start. Now they are starting below $30, despite inflation!

A little off topic. For 26 yrs in private practice .... I only employed female ortho asst's. Not because of sexism, but because women (and some girls) were the only ones to apply. Now in the corporate scene .... at one time (the asst's sometimes move around a bit) I had 3 males and 1 female asst's. It was odd at first (male asst's), but then I really kind of enjoyed the Man talk (football, hockey, cars, scratching in public, etc.etc.). At present: 2 males. 2 females. Perfect balance. No drama. I'm happy.

I guess what I'm saying is that having more men in Hygeine is a positive thing and I would have to believe the job market should be fine.
