Which schools require attendance to lecture? I know some schools require attendance to some things (SLU requires attendance to the few PBL small group classes they have), but I'd like to know which schools require attendance to lecture for the majority of first and second year. The only one I know of is Mayo.

Mostly asking about these schools since they are where I'm applying.

Albany
Drexel
EVMS
GW
Georgetown
Loyola Chicago
LSU-NO
NYMC
Penn State
Rosalind Franklin
Rush
SLU
Temple
Tulane
Cincinnati
Missouri-Columbia
MCW
VCU
Vermont
Wake Forest
Wright State

I'm pretty sure lecture is mandatory at Wake Forest. You need to swipe in.

Is attendance policy high up on your list of reasons to/not attend a school? I'm just wondering if this is really something people are considering seriously.

Thank you.

It's not really high on my list, but it will be something I consider if I get a load of secondaries and (hopefully) interviews and don't have enough time or money to complete them all. My assumption is that mandatory attendance may equate to lectures not being recorded. If I get sick or need to miss lecture for whatever reason, that will suck. My girlfriend just finished MS2 and some of their PBL classes were mandatory attendance, but all their other lectures weren't and they were all recorded and put online. I liked the system and I imagine myself handling the workload the same way she has for the last two years. Sleep in, watch lecture, study, go to bed. I'm not a morning person, and being required to show up to 8am lecture everyday is not something I want to do. Not to mention the fact that recorded lectures can be watched at 1.5x speed, which is awesome.

And yes, I'm aware that third/fourth year rotations will require me to be there early, especially surgery, but that's entirely different.

Georgetown does not have required lecture attendance. There are occasionally required small groups (not a huge commitment) and anatomy lab (which is a huge commitment everywhere).

I would consider it. And this is coming from someone who goes to class every day. Some days, you just don't want to go (or sometimes you can't). Some required small groups and anatomy lab is definitely ok, but I think we're past the point that we need to be forced to go to everything. Some people also just learn better outside of class.

yeah its a big turn off. I wouldn't attend a school that had mandatory attendance if I had options. If it was my only acceptance then it would be a different story.

I would have probably jumped off the roof if I had to go to every lecture this year. Then again I'm the kind of person that hates getting up to go to 8:30 lectures. If it doesn't bother you its not a big deal but if it does it really is something to seriously consider.

You're basically asking yourself if its worth it to spend 20+ hours a week in class or not. You'll especially regret it when you come to lecturers that everyone knows suck and you're still forced to waste 10 hours of your time with them while they lecture in physio or path for a week.

I believe lectures are not mandatory at Penn State. I do know that most of the lectures are recorded and can be accessed at any time so it would seem that you do not need to attend lectures. I would imagine that the PBL sessions however need to be attended...

If I remember correctly the University of Utah requires attendance at their lectures. In addition I believe there is a minimum dress req.

So no looking like a scrub in the 801

From what I see on SDN and heard from people I know, isn't this one of the things med students look back on and wish they considered? Or at least considered not going to class and just studying? I always hear that going to lecture in med school is a waste of time.
