many interviews but didn't get in, anyone?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay, back to the original interview topic - i just got my request for an interview mail yesterday - does this mean I'm OK with my GPA and my PCAT scores so far? If I do get accepted at the interview (which is in two weeks), should I still send in my GPAs after?

I was pretty stunned because my GPA is only 3.5 and my PCAT score wasn't at all amazing..... or .. how are the interview requests decided anyway? Based solely on marks??
I'm not sure if I should rest or still be nervous..

Thanks.

You won't be accepted at the interview. You won't get done and they say, "OK, you're in!" The committee will go through your file, compare you with other applicants and make admissions decisions from there.

As far as how interview requests are decided, who knows? Only the ADCOMs know. I would imagine they are made with the information they have. Your GPA, PCAT, everything you entered in your PharmCAS application. That's the information they have, that's what they use. If you got an invitation for an interview, I think you can relax a little. They see something in your application they like. Not everyone gets an interview.

Thanks for the reply.

But Wayne State DOES have rolling admissions - and I know several people who have gotten in that way. (Meaning, at the interviews)
What is the percentage of getting accepted from the interviews??? I'm just a bit surprised - I hope they didn't realize they made a mistake in sending me their email. I know someone with a 4.0 GPA with 76 PCAT score who did not get their interview offers yet... which tells me it's not ONLY based on marks...

:S

This is very confusing, and I (want to) can't somehow relax!

Rolling admissions are different. Their ADCOMs meet several times during the admissions cycle. They hold one session of interviews with the applications they have received by a certain date. They admit the best applicants. Anyone who doesn't make the cut during that cycle are put back into the pool of applicants, which are reviewed after the academic update. If those applicants who were passed over performed very well during Fall Quarter/Semester, they may be granted admission at that time. They set up a new interview date for the next round of applicants and so on.... follow? I hope that made sense.

Wait so when is that 'cycle'? And where/when does the interview fall in? I'm not really getting what you're saying.. so..is there a chance of me getting an answer during the interview or no??

A rolling cycle means that they continuously accept students throughout the year until the school year starts. They don't just interview everyone at one time, make a decision about every person they want in. They consider applicants several times during the year. I can't speak for any other colleges out there but I'm fairly sure you won't be told that you were accepted AT the interview.

They didn't make a mistake. You got an invite because there is something about you that they like. Now all you need is the confidence to say, "Of course it wasn't a mistake. They'd be lucky to have me."

Anybody here has received more than 4 interviews in the previous cycle (or this cycle) but in the end did not receive any acceptances? Anyone?

I have a feeling that even if you have 10+ interviews, there is still a chance that you will NOT get accepted. :luck:..

No, that is not right. Don't think too far. Your chance to get in depends on how strong you want to win and how serious you really think about your choice. You may want to show it to the interviewers.
Not many people get interview offer. We have spent at least 2-3 years to reach the interview desk, then we have 30 minutes to close it successfully. So, it's worthy to invest your time to prepare for those 30 minutes. And you will get in!!!!
No matter how many times we have been interviewed if we don't learn from that. 🙂

Yes.. but this semester (the one that just ended) I got two C's in BOTH SCIENCE courses..... I'm really really worried right now... so they could just clearly reject me.

Or if my interview is still good.... would I have a chance?

If you go into the interview with the mindset that you have had in your last 3 posts, you're going to get rejected. You sound timid and unworthy. They offered you an interview for a reason. Don't piss it away. And NO, you won't an answer regarding acceptance on the interview date.

Okay. Fine. As long as they don't ask about WHY I got two C's in my science courses.

Pff, you sound so scared of this. If they ask you why, then give an adult answer as to why you got them. I had far more C's than two but I wasn't crying about it either. I learned and matured from my mistakes. Simple as that. You sound like you're going to freeze up. Have confidence in yourself.

Well I can't deny i'm NOT scared ... I mean the interview itself sounds pretty nerve-wracking. Have you had interviews? They're not TOO bad are they?

and... what exactly is an 'adult' answer?? I know you mean something mature, but I'm not sure what kinda of excuse would work in this case.

EDIT: I see you have been accepted. So you had interviews. I suppose you're a very good speaker also. 🙂

I was offered 4 interviews in California this year. Speaking and writing are my strong points while my GPA was my weak point. You are the only one who truly knows why you got those C's. I would say there is a 99% chance they won't ask about them; however, if they do, only YOU can answer why you got them. Be honest. Elaborate stories and excuses in interviews tend to sound fake and there is just no reason for them unless they are ACTUALLY valid. I was ready to say, "I was immature and didn't put forth my full effort, a mistake I will absolutely never make again." Nothing wrong with that. So often I saw people trying to play the sympathy card but they came off as very bland and cliche' because so many other people tried to play that same card... On a tangent, I can't tell you how many times I heard, "Oh I want to go into healthcare because a family member of mine got cancer." Well guess what, a lot of us could say the same and that doesn't separate you in any way from the person sitting next to you in the interview. I got so tired of hearing that as the reason for people's persuit of a career in pharmacy. Good lord.

I see. that was very helpful. I guess if they do ask, i'll just be honest and swear never to repeat the mistakes again...

Oh gosh..

I'm not sure if the sympathy/cancer card works or not but I wouldn't go for it unless its absolutely true.

At my interview, they asked why my grades were so low before and so high in the recent 2 years. I told them the truth. My grades were poor because at the time, I didn't know what I wanted for a career and I made the mistake of participating in too many extracurricular activities and settling for passing grades. Pros is I had a lot of fun in college and am lot more sociable than ever before but at the expense of my grades? (I wouldn't recommend it). I retook tons of classes and got the highest grade in many of those classes. I believe I made up for it, but what really matters is what the admissions committee think...

I'm not sure if this will get me into pharmacy school or not but it is the truth. I'm sure there are people just like me but most people resort to the sympathy card since its the safest way to go. I've been told numerous times, "If you mess up this semester, tell them you had family issues..." well, I don't have an excuse and it is what it is......

I agree... Looking back, I don't even know why I posted this question.
Thank you everyone for the resp🙂nse.

Grades aren't everything. The interview is your chance to make the sale. You are going to have a hard time convincing them to take a chance on you if you aren't sure they should. You have to reprogram your brain to tell yourself that you deserve that spot because you are that good. Focus on your good points and minimize the bad. Right now you are doing the reverse and that isn't going to help you.

If your school has a place to do mock interviews and I think most do, take advantage of that. You will feel a lot better in the actual interview if you have had some practice.

Would you be kind to do grammar check for me? Make it perfect please:

I had applied to 5 schools got rejected in one was put on waiting list on 4 and than got accepted in all 4.. Dont loose your hopes.

Hey guys, I'm a 4th time re-applicant. In my first interview this year, I got accepted. The thing is to learn from your past mistakes and apply to the new schools out of state. I learned from my past 3 mistakes. I only applied in-state and couple of out-of-state schools. It was a horrible 3 years of rejection. But I kept improving my stats by enrolling in a pharmaccy tech program, got my tech license, volunteered for the Red Cross, JDRF, and and I finally got in! Now I'm at the age of almost retiring. Maybe I will die in debt. Muwawawa.

There is 1 lady in this forum who have applied 7 times to get in.

Are you sure that's true? I am on the unranked waitlist for the U of MN and I don't think we are put back in with the rest of the applicant pool after the academic update but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I definitely wish you were right!

As far as UK is concerned, that is how they operate. This came straight from a member of the admissions committee.

Think positively will get you in. Being worried serve you none but procrastination.

Are you applying this year?

I was planning to apply this year but Brian @ MCP/Worcester told me that school would not look at your application if you missed alot of science classes, especially OC ( I need OC 1,2 and Bio 1,2). So I am holding back another year. Hopefully, I can get in some pharmacy school in 2010.

We can talk on the phone. I know 1 guy he has helped me a lot with my application and I got in 3 schools this year.

I wonder if you would do the same for a user named "Asian Guy."

To the OP. Whats the applicant's PCAT scores and GPA? Even if you get an interview the school still looks at your scores and GPA and if they are not as good as other interviewers then you will still get rejected...For example...if UNC interviewed someone with a 3.5 and a 75 on the PCAT...then later on had people with 4.0 and 95 on the PCAT applied and interviewed...who do you think will get accepted? of course the people with the better scores/gpa....they were just interviewed later b/c they applied later.

Nothing personal but you are talking out of your ***. You haven't been interviewed or accepted by any school and you are advising someone about who will get in and who will not. I neither had a 3.5 overall nor a 75 for my PCAT and I was accepted to a top 5 pharmacy school. High GPAs and PCAT scores are good but they DO NOT guarantee a spot.

I am talking from experisence of applying to dental schools. I got accepted to Columbia, Penn, Nova and NYU for dental school and know how to interview and how much grades/test scores count.
High scores don't guarantee you a spot but average to bad scores will most likely keep you out unless you are an underrepresented minority or have connections etc etc...otherwise you are competing with everyone else and numbers count a lot.

Are you saying that you have a GPA lower than 3.5 and a PCAT score lower than 75 and got accepted to a pharm school???????

I'm white and I don't even live in Kentucky.

Well damn maybe I am wrong... Do you have a ton of research hours and publications? that helps a lot in applications too...thats something I wish I did in undergrad but I really hate research so I didn't do any....Congrats on your acceptance! 👍

No research, no publications. I honestly couldn't tell you what got me in over people who did have > 3.5 GPA and a 75+ PCAT. I'm just proof that you don't need that to get in to a great school.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe you have some very unique EX activities on your application and you went to a very well known undergraduate college..for example I know a girl that got into Harvard dental school...she had the same scores/gpa as me but she started a health club and a dental club at Penn (she went to Penn for undergrad) and she also went to brazil to provide dental care for some homeless people.
I didn't do any of that and got rejected of course!
But yeah I am not trying to say people who score higher are better or anything...I only did well in undergrad b/c I study 4-6 hours a day from mondays-fridays...I have a friend with a 3.6 gpa who didn't study nearly as much and I think those people are the smarter ones!

Perhaps, at the interview, UofK faculty and admin committee thought ValeUC was a likeable person and decided to admit Vale....or it could be a combination of different things.

Vale, I definitely think the thank you letters helped.....let's hope it works out for me.

btw, UK is a good Pharmacy school. (some rate it as top 10 in the nation). 🙂

How do you send the Thank you letters? By mail or email? Also, how do you get their contact info to send the letters?

I send mine by snail mail. In my opinion, email letters seem contrived and impersonal.

I suggest looking at the school's website (or you can call to ask for their mailing address) and directing the letter to specific people who interviewed you or helped you in the application process. Regardless if you get accepted or not, a thank you letter is the most professional thing to do. (especially during the holiday season).

hope that helps 🙂
