First Off ... Moderators, please do not close this thread. Should it be in The Lounge - probably, but who cares. It's March Madness & let's see what color everyone's blood runs around here.

Alright everyone, it's Christmas time for the college basketball fan. Even if you don't watch college b-ball regularly, I guarantee you're engulfed by this tourney at school, at the office watercooler, etc. It's the BEST SPORTS TOURNAMENT EVER!!!

The clock is quickly ticking before the first tipoff tomorrow morning ... does everyone have their brackets filled out? Which region will this year's Cinderella come from? Who'll be the first number one seed to go? What teams will march all the way to the Final Four?

Exciting stuff - TOO EXCITING TO CLOSE THIS THREAD (unless, of course, I'm the only one who cares about this ... which I highly doubt it!).

As for me, I've got some tweaking left to do but for starters:

GO ILLINI!!! While they got screwed on their seed & region, I'll be yelling till the end (when UCONN mops the floor with us).
First #1 Seed to Go Out - Arkansas upsets Memphis in Dallas in the 2nd round.
Cinderella - I'd like to say #15 Winthrop over #2 Tennessee, but I can see both West Virginia & Wichita St. making runs.
Final Four - UCONN, Florida, Pitt, LSU
National Champ - UCONN

Well ... there you go. Hopefully there are tons others who share my excitement & will post.

You're going to have to get by WASHINGTON first to meet UCONN. Don't forget that your team is traveling across the country. Air Force could wear you down in the first round making you ripe for the picking. GO DAWGS!!! and DAWGPACK represent in S.D.!!!!

Oh ... I guess I forgot to mention ... Washington's not getting past the first round. Here comes the 5-12 upset!!!

N. Carolina could go far even though they are young.

Sorry to tell ya, but Duke is going to win. I have Duke, Gonzaga, Boston College and UCONN making the final four. Then I have UCONN and Duke in the final with Duke winning.

Duke bandwagon?

UCLA FOR THE WIN!!!! WE'RE BACK AND BADDER THAN EVER!!

Seriously, we're the darkhorse of the competition. If we can get into the Final 4, and we will, we can spoil at least one of the 2 topdogs (Duke, UConn) in the competition.

GO BRUINS BABY 😀

🙂

i got the same finals on my yahoo brackets, but I'm going with UCONN, though JJ Redick makes me believe again that white man can play ball. 🙂 🙂 🙂

No, I'm actually a Maryland Terps fan, which means I really hate Duke. But I think it's Duke's year. They are in the ACC, which is pretty much the hardest conference to be in when it comes to basketball and they did well all year. Plus JJ movin on next year. He'll be wanting it bad.

Yeah. I was just joshin' ya....I respect Duke...coach K and JJ is awesome for a short(relative) white guy.

How does one look at that bracket and not automatically put Murray St. in the Final Four? MURRAY ALL THE WAY!

Good assessment, however I have Villanova making the final four rather then Boston College. Not that the final 4 matter anyways cause DUKE IS GOING TO WIN! :meanie: And to the people who call it jumpin on the bandwagon...lets see who can top this bandwagon HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Another Illini fan here too. Went to UIUC for my BS and MS. 5 years of student season tickets. Always do the brackets.
My Final Four: Illinois, Boston College, Texas, Memphis
Final: Illinois over Memphis for the WIN!

I've got UCLA vs. UNC (YES! Over UCONN) in the finals!

Michigan State has been streaky this year but they are my school so I have to stand behind them - hopefully another final 4 this year even though that road will have to go through NC, illi and everyone's top pick uconn...hey it happened last year so who knows 🙂

PS my next choices are illinois and OSU... got to keep my loyalty in the big 10 🙂

I think michigan state will make the run. If they beat North Carolina, which I think they will than they have a great chance of getting to elite eight or even final four. I think illini will make the run too. these guys are good. First No one to go out will be memphis definitely. Another prediction is that Duke will not make final four again. they are good but somebody will beat them. It will be really exciting.

Here's my question: HOW IN THE HECK DID NC GET A HIGHER RANKING THAN THE ILLINI WHEN WE BEAT NC THIS YEAR ... ON YOUR COURT!!!!!!!!

Just goes to show you that the committee also has their heads up most of the ACC's butt (like the CBS sports staff).

As for the Pukies - Redick might be in for a surprise when he's called upon to actually play a little defense. Great shot, but that's it.

Hardest conference??? Are you kidding me???

Try the Big Ten, with the Big East a close second.

OMG GO ALMA MATER U!!!!!1!11one

I agree, Big Ten is the toughest conference hands down. However, ACC has some good teams. they have always had good teams and they do well in NCAA tournament. Don't forget guys, last year nobody respected Big ten, and they had 3 teams in elite eight and two in final four. College basketball is so unpredictable and anything can happen.

seriously how am i/we going to survive in dental school the next few weeks with the tournament on every weekend?? i smell failed quizzes and exams coming up!! 😱 😀

The big east is by far the best conference. They left Cincy out because they didnt want them to get 9 teams in. The big ten comes in second and I would say the ACC and SEC are pretty close. Duke will be lucky to make it to the elite 8. I can't go against UCON this year for the title. I do agree watch out for Michigan State, they always step up come tournament time.

Now that I'm not trying to get accepted to Indiana anymore I can admit that I'm a Syracuse fan. :meanie:

I still remember watching the national championship game where IU beat the orangemen, and I've never forgiven Indiana for that. I think that was detected subliminally during my interview.

Anyhow, I was real dissapointed with 'cuse this year until the Big East tourny...I can't believe how clutch McNamara was. I hope they don't have an emotional lull and lose in the first round again.

But, no matter what happens I'm a Bluejay, not a Hoosier. 😀

What exactly is a Hoosier anyhow???

The Word "Hoosier"
For well over a century and a half the people of Indiana have been called Hoosiers. It is one of the oldest of state nicknames and has had a wider acceptance than most. True, there are Buckeyes of Ohio, the Suckers of Illinois and the Tarheels of North Carolina -- but none of these has had the popular usage accorded Hoosier.

But where did Hoosier come from? What is its origin? We know that it came into general usage in the 1830s. John Finley of Richmond wrote a poem, "The Hoosier's Nest," which was used as the "Carrier's Address" of the Indianapolis Journal, Jan. 1, 1833. It was widely copied throughout the country and even abroad. Finley originally wrote Hoosier as "Hoosher." Apparently the poet felt that it was sufficiently familiar to be understandable to his readers. A few days later, on Jan. 8, 1833, at the Jackson Day dinner in Indianapolis, John W. Davis offered "The Hoosher State of Indiana" as a toast. And in August, former Indiana Gov. James B. Ray announced that he intended to publish a newspaper, The Hoosier, at Greencastle, Indiana.

A few instances of the earlier written use of Hoosier have been found. The word appears in the "Carrier's Address" of the Indiana Democrat on Jan. 3, 1832. G. L. Murdock wrote on Feb. 11, 1831, in a letter to Gen. John Tipton, "Our Boat will [be] named the Indiana Hoosier." In a publication printed in 1860, Recollections . . . of the Wabash Valley, Sanford Cox quotes a diary which he dates July 14, 1827, "There is a Yankee trick for you -- done up by a Hoosier." One can only wonder how long before this Hoosier was used orally.

As soon as the nickname came into general use, speculation began as to its origin. Among the more popular theories:

When a visitor hailed a pioneer cabin in Indiana or knocked upon its door, the settler would respond, "Who's yere?" And from this frequent response Indiana became the "Who's yere" or Hoosier state. No one ever explained why this was more typical of Indiana than of Illinois or Ohio.

Indiana rivermen were so spectacularly successful in trouncing or "hushing" their adversaries in the brawling that was then common that they became known as "hushers," and eventually Hoosiers.

There was once a contractor named Hoosier employed on the Louisville and Portland Canal who preferred to hire laborers from Indiana. They were called "Hoosier's men" and eventually all Indianans were called Hoosiers.

A theory attributed to Gov. Joseph Wright derived Hoosier from an Indian word for corn, "hoosa." Indiana flatboatmen taking corn or maize to New Orleans came to be known as "hoosa men" or Hoosiers. Unfortunately for this theory, a search of Indian vocabularies by a careful student of linguistics failed to reveal any such word for corn.

Quite as possible is a facetious explanation offered by "The Hoosier Poet," James Whitcomb Riley. He claimed that Hoosier originated in the pugnacious habits of our early settlers. They were enthusiastic and vicious fighters who gouged, scratched and bit off noses and ears. This was so common an occurrence that a settler coming into a tavern the morning after a fight and seeing an ear on the floor would touch it with his toe and casually ask, "Whose ear?"

Many have inquired into the origin of Hoosier. But by all odds the most serious student of the matter was Jacob Piatt Dunn, Jr., Indiana historian and longtime secretary of the IHS. Dunn noted that "hoosier" was frequently used in many parts of the South in the 19th century for woodsmen or rough hill people. He traced the word back to "hoozer," in the Cumberland dialect of England. This derives from the Anglo-Saxon word "hoo" meaning high or hill. In the Cumberland dialect, the world "hoozer" meant anything unusually large, presumably like a hill. It is not hard to see how this word was attached to a hill dweller or highlander. Immigrants from Cumberland, England, settled in the southern mountains (Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland River, Cumberland Gap, etc.). Their descendents brought the name with them when they settled in the hills of southern Indiana.

As Indiana writer Meredith Nicholson observed: "The origin of the term 'Hoosier' is not known with certainty. But certain it is that . . . Hoosiers bear their nickname proudly."

You are dead wrong, the final four will be duke, ucla, uconn, and villinova. ucla practically has homecourt advantage in san diego and oakland and ben howland will shutt down Adam Morrison and JJ Redick. I'm going for the underdog (i.e. ucla) for the national championship which we have won more than everyone else by the way.

I would love nothing more than a UCLA win, Go Bruins! Too bad it aint gonna happen, we've had a solid run this year though. My final four call: UConn, Nova, Texas, and UCLA. UConn over Texas in the Final.

First off, don't be bitter because we beat you guys last year. That's what happens when you chuck up 40 three pointers.

Now for this year. Carolina is a much different team than it was in November. If you came and played us at home today we'd wipe the floor with you. On one hand you have an Illini that lost 4 of their last 9 games, or a Carolina team that lost only 2 of 13 games including beating duke at cameron.

The committee puts more emphasis on recent play. What a team does in Nov is dwarfed by the last month of conference play and conference tournies.

So take off your orange colored glasses and realize that Illinois can never fill Carolina's shoes

My final 4: Kansas Duke UConn Nove
Final: Duke-UConn
UConn wins.

GO HEELS!!

Are you sure about that ... because with that reasoning, how the heck did Tennessee get a 2 seed when they finished the season 2-4 & two of those losses were at home.

As far as "Nov is dwarfed by the last month" - again, not too sure about this since all the experts continually talk about strength of schedule and who a team played in non-conf. I agree NC is a different team, but so are the Illini - we've had a lot of young players come a long way.

You're just bitter that NC will always be the beaten, red-headed step child to the Dukies.

The Illini could have finished the season stronger as well if we had played Maryland, Wake, GTech, & Miami. Face it - ACC is weak this year.

As for the championship game last year - you're right, we had no inside game and kept chuckin' it from the cheap seats. I was there & thought it was going to be a blowout after the first half but it ended up being a great game.

After some more tweaking last night, my Final Four has come down to:

UCONN
Florida
Kansas (big question mark since they are young, but what an easy region)
As much as I hate to say it, the Pukies.

DcS - I've got your UNC boys going down to MSU in the second round. Rematch from last year and MSU/Izzo go on to victory.

Wow, thanks for history lesson MC4. 👍

Didn't mean to offend you or any other Hoosiers, btw. I'm inclined to think that the last theory might be the most accurate even though most of Indiana isn't that hilly. Afterall, I live in Terre Haute and it's anything but "high ground".

I still don't like your basketball team though 😉

Big 10, hardest conference hands down. Not the Big East, look at Seton Hall today...

EDIT: forgot that BC was in ACC

Lets not forget that UCLA basically had a cakewalk to the final four in the Wooden era. The ACC had many good teams all trying for 1 spot in the tourney.

My final four is UNC, Boston College, Duke, and Memphis. Duke vs. UNC for the championship and Duke wins in double overtime.

Are you sure you want BC in that. They barely survived Pacific. Pacific should have had that game if it wasn't for that turnover in the first OT. BC looked tired in that game. I don't think BC can win more than one game now. Nexet game may be their last game. UNC isn't going anywhere either. They won't pass the Michigan State(ya they beat them last year in fianl four) this year. It has been intersting tourney so far.

You and me both. As much as I like to root for the underdog, I've got BC going way too far.

I'm with you HD...nothing's sweeter than a nice deke followed by a roofer and the water bottle flyin' off the top of the goal. Ooops, you're a goalie..my bad. 😀 Yup, the longer this 9 pt. deficit for 'Cuse keeps up the more I think...bring on the Stanley Cup playoffs.
