Marksmanship qual california
Started by Perrotfish
I did mine in San Diego at a civillian range in Clairmont Mesa. At the time, they had a military rangemaster that could do the qual for 9mm and AR-15. He gave us a form that I brought to PSD to put the qual in my service record. I don't recall how much it cost. I'm glad I did, because although I did 9mm in Pensacola, the opportunity to do AR-15 never presented itself again. Then again, I didn't go looking for it.
For those in Norfolk area, there is a civilian range close by that does both qualifications as well. Cant remember name, but its right near the Navy base...

Are you aware of any 600+ yard rifle ranges in the Norfolk / VA beach / Chesapeake / Suffolk / Newport News area?
What's the point of doing this? Just to get it out of the way?

Not sure, but if you need this to qaulify with M16, they do so in the indoor- not 600+ but scaled and its legit.

You don't need a 600 yard range. I have qualed multiple times on a 50 yard range. Its just a smaller target.

Sorry, didn't mean to suggest that the 600 was needed for the qualification.
I like to shoot and I'm presently spoiled by a very nice range near my house that has steel targets from 200 - 600 yards and a separate 1000 yard range. It's possible that I'll be heading back to Portsmouth in a couple years - last time I lived there I didn't do any long range shooting.
Found a place for Navy quals in the SD area
http://www.gotammo.com/
Info on their class calendar. $175 for rifle and pistol qualification.
Haven't been there. If I check it out I'll let you know.

For the bling!
It's by no means required.

Oh, so it would qualify you for the marksmanship medals? Sounds like a fun way to spend an afternoon anyway. Going to have to try and find an Army one...

Army officers don't get to wear any marksmanship medals. "All Army officers are experts"...so they say. Anyways, moral of the story is you don't get those 2 snazzy ribbons that the navy dudes have.
Did my rifle and pistol marksmanship quals at the place mentioned above. If interested I would recommend it. $175 plus ammo for both. Came out to about $225. Good instructor, keep classes small, max 4 I think, I was the only one there when I went. He spends hour and a half or so in the classroom then out to the range. Only one chance on the range, if you don't qual or want to try again to get high it requires a return trip. If you qual you leave that night with paperwork in hand for PSD.

Did you get a chance to qual during your predeployment workup?
I was looking over my orders and it appears I've got a few weeks of camping out with the Army in Georgia coming up.
No. We did fam fire with the M4 and had a chance to BZO at LNK. We did go to the qual range with the 9 at Lejune, but there was no instruction, and it was a Marine course. I'm told there is some conversion, but the Navy and Marine quals have a different set of drills you run through.
