Just curious what people would say about getting married after taking the USLME. After taking the boards a huge burden is out of the way. Just curious how different the 3rd and 4th years are from the first two. While you might be in the hospital longer (depending on the rotation) than you were in the classroom and be on call, at least you dont have to study when you are done for the day. I know there is no perfect time for getting married and you need to just make do with life, but wouldnt it be better to be married before having to go into a residency?

Im getting married in the december of my 3rd year (2 week break). I am takig the USMLE next week. Weddings take some planning, I wouldnt want to do it after step 1 unless u get a long break before 3rd year starts. We dont over here.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Do what works for you.

Probably as good a time as any other. As long as you're not the one planning the wedding. If you're planning the wedding, then no, it wouldn't be good to have it be right after boards. There's a lot of stuff that needs to be taken care of in the last few months beforehand and I can imagine studying for boards and trying to take care of wedding planning simultaneously could get really stressful. I got married after MSI, that plan worked out fine. I just finished MSII and am studying for boards now, and I would not want to be doing what I was doing last spring in preparation for the wedding now while I'm trying to study for boards too. If your fiance will do most of the planning it would probably be fine.

First of all, third and fourth years are very different from first and second years. I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but you DO in fact have to study when you are done for the day. I don't know about your med school, but at mine we take the NBME subject shelf exam for each core rotation (FP, peds, OB/Gyn, etc). Depending on the rotation, that exam grade will make up a third to half of your grade, with attending evals making up most of the rest of the grade. You WILL need to study when you get home from the hospital, and it can be very draining. Don't get me wrong, third year is still much better than first or second, but it is even more busy and tiring, if you can imagine!

I got married a week after I took step I between MSII and MSIII. I'm really glad I got married at that time. I agree with you that it would be better to get married now rather than right before or during residency. Don't wait for life to slow down to take that step in your life, because it will never slow down enough. Your marriage should be more important than your education and career, so you will find time to devote to it. Your marriage will hopefully serve as a wonderful support to help you through the tough clinical years and residency...I couldn't have done it without my wife's wonderful support of me during that time!

Best of luck!
