I have a question for the fine people of this site. I am currently in a biomedical sciences masters program. This is where it gets tricky. Maybe some people have been in a similar situation. I took the MCAT got a 24, I have a 3.7 GPA from undergrad. I didn't get accepted into med school, choose to do this program instead. However, I have been diagnosed, by a doctor, crazy I know, with depression and bipolar disorder. For the last several weeks my grades have been terrible, only adding to my anxiety. Then I haven't been sleeping. So right now in the program I have a 2.9. This program guarantees an interview as long as your grades after 2 quarters are above a 3.0. So here is my main question, at this point if I turn it around will I be able to get into med school. Maybe someone who got into the med school from masters program whose gpa wasn't that high. I know this is a lot, but anything would help.

Did you speak to admissions at schools you applied to about why you werent given an acceptance, weak areas in your app maybe your interview etc? Poor grades in the masters program is not a good sign- try to bring them up. You have a great undergrad gpa and as long as you apply broadly and early and have decent ECs I dont see why you even needed to do the biomedical masters program. My 2cents ...Goodluck

Before you do anything else, find out if you can take a leave of absence. If you can, do so, and go heal. You're not in the optimum position right now to show any AdCom that you can survive in medical school.

Hindsight is 20:20, you've already made the choice to go into the MS progrma, so that's fine. However, staying in it and having a less than optimal performance, simply says you won't be able to handle medical schoo, which will be a LOT harder than the mS program. A 2.9 MS GPA would be automatic reject from me and my colleagues.

As someone who has advised medical sctudents with mental health issues, please talk to your psychiatrist (if you haven't done so already) about whether you wil be able to handle the pressure of medical school. Believe me, it's a crucible.

good luck!

LEAVE OF ABSENCE if you think your BPD is going to get in the way of getting good grades. A masters of SMP is YOUR LAST CHANCE and you dont want to mess this up. Got it? Thats all that can really be said. Oh, I had a 2.45 undergrad to a 3.75 grad..somewhere around a 2.95 application GPA with a 27 MCAT...got into my top choice DO and 2 others IIRC.

So its possible, but you dont want to screw your last chance...because it really is your last chance in most cases.

Is there anyone you can speak with regarding your situation at the school? An advisor you can confide in? Also how are your study habits? I am at a pretty intense SMP-like program myself and it is absolutely nothing like my undergraduate courses; it takes a lot more effort and basically requires most of my free time to be devoted to studying. I've had to learn how to become a more efficient studier (still learning that) and find which methods work best for me (still learning that too).

I know I've been stressed out a few times over the past 2 months, but my eyes are on the prize. I've found that exercise helps a lot. I sleep better at night because of it and I feel more focused on my work as well when it comes time to hit the books. I'm not sure what your program is like, but I'm sure you can find that hour to hit the gym, or go for a run/walk. I've experienced a bit of anxiety myself at times, and I know it's not fun.

These programs are a battle, without a doubt. But the marathon is far from over. Bailing out now, may not be the best idea. It's up to you though. Do you think you can raise that GPA that tenth of a point by your deadline?

Go talk to someone at the school who can help you. Reach out. There are people who can help you succeed. Also, feel free to PM me if you want, although I've pretty much said everything I can think of right here. Relax. Breath. Find your confidence. And trust your gut.

Be well.
