Match Lists 2015!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For all the pre-meds looking through this thread, remember that match lists only give you limited information. Sure, some can be pretty ridiculous (wtf Penn?!), but as someone who just went through the match process, there's a lot more that goes into someone's personal rank list choices than what you can see on a list. You also can't see the actual people behind the program names, and knowing many of those super-strong matches personally from the interview trail, I can tell you they are incredibly gifted, hard working, brilliant, and personable people who have done mind-blowing things with their time in medical school. While name definitely matters, I think these people would have matched just as well coming from almost anywhere.

This match list thread disclaimer gets posted every year, and apparently this year was my turn. 🙂

Personally, I would group match lists into 2 categories:

1) The skim it and think "holy s--t that's unbelievable" lists
2) The rest

So much this.

My wife was disconcerted with the small number of people who matched on the west coast from my school, and I have to remind her that a lot of it is self-selection. People here tend to want to stay here, and it's been that way forever. People who want to go west generally don't have much trouble doing it.

I heard from some friends at Penn Med that their high success on the match (both by top tier specialties and residency programs for those specialties) are due to the H/P/F curriculumn which encourages high stress learning. This translates to the highest step 1 scores in the nation. I guess an average step 1 score well above 240 makes it a little easier to get into top tier programs....

That's BS, the match list at any top 5 medical school is consistently outstanding.

stress learning unfortunately very unhealthy. great short term benefits but poor long term benefits.

you are probably correct. but I am just saying that is a little extra incentive (and pressure and stress). but you can't deny that Penn Med leads the pack with the highest average step 1 score....
They also have the highest MCAT of any top 5 schools by a whole point, so that's not a surprise. They are a school of very good test takers.

I was waiting for the spam of MGH/Longwood hospitals, and finally saw it with IM, and was like "Ah, there it is."

Its amazing seeing the low numbers of students matching into Radiology.

You are seeing VERY few US MDs matching at community programs except those in competitive locations.

Is this because radiology is becoming more competitive or because people are not attracted to it anymore?

It's because 8 years of doom and gloom have scared everyone off. The lousy job market isn't helping matters. The one thing oversupply might help with is that midlevels may overlook encroaching it for a bit.

Well good thing I'm looking to go into IR... if that changes anything.

This list isn't quite right - should also include Children's National, and the peds/genetics position is at CHOP.
Very impressive list for UMass this year in pediatrics - 3 residents are going to Boston Children's; they hadn't sent anyone to Children's for at least the last few years.
The school did very well as a whole!

To be honest I think this match list is kind of disturbing. It just irritates me when people gush about the HMS match list. That inbreeding is absurd. 5/7 Rad-Onc positions, 6/18 Neurology positions, and god knows what percentage of IM positions. And I don't want to hear any nonsense about HMS med students being the smartest in the nation so of course the Harvard programs would select them. There's plenty of fantastic candidates all over the country. All programs show some level of favoritism to their own, and I have no issue with that. It's just that Harvard and a few others consistently take this to an incredible level. It's a detriment and believe it hampers a program's ability to innovate and bring in new ideas.

Here's university of hawaii!

***link deleted due to request, will try to come back and list it without names***

For some reason the first page is a blank...also the last name on the list was purposefully cut off but it's transitional hawaii and anesthesiology MGH

Downstate was only one of two schools that took me. Coming from a "top 5 college" I was pretty bummed but looking over our match list I couldn't be prouder! I'm one of the urologies 🙂. Anywho, here it is, Downstate 2015's match list:

9 matched, wow.

Do you guys get a lot of pre-clinical exposure to the field, have well-rated rotations that give great impressions of the field, or just coincidence for your class?

Obviously, it demonstrates that Harvard has strong confidence in their own students.

The way I see it, that reflects well on both the hospital system and the school.

No clearly I did not. As a University of Washington grad, and Stanford/Harvard trained surgeon, I am curious who your alma matter is. Do share.

yeah but you don't get as many alternative perspectives which kills innovation

You don't really sound like an attending.
I've been an attending for going on 10 years. My inquiry was to garner an understanding of where SS went to school. He has been very vocal in this forum and done a decent job at bashing the results of many small med schools throughout the country, so I thought he should support his swag with a decent defense.
