Whoa where are the EM matches?
Maybe 90% of the other 30% that didn't report? Hopefully...
1 AOA and no ACGME is odd.
It seems like ACGME Ophthalmology is really receptive to DO's compared to some of the other fields like ENT, Ortho, and Derm.

either anesthesia/rads got less competitive or there were a lot of strong DO applicants going into those fields this year
Anesthesia has never been über competitive and radiology has become less competitive due to lower reimbursements/poor job market.
Bacchus' post is for PCOM, for those of us on mobile devices.
either anesthesia/rads got less competitive or there were a lot of strong DO applicants going into those fields this year
None of the places matched at are really "competitive" though
None of the places matched at are really "competitive" though
This could be in relation to strictly PCOM but I have seen DO matches on this thread to U Penn, Michigan, University of Wahington, Beth Israel, Mayo, MCW, Wisconsin, Iowa, Cleveland Clinic George Washington, Colorado, Thomas Jefferson, just to name a few.....anyone who applied on the trail and has any knowledge of allopathic anesthesia knows these are quite competitive, even for very good allopathic applicants.
I think there's a lot of bias in the list because people either just chose not to do the ACGME match or they wanted to stay around Philadelphia. There aren't many places listed that aren't less than a few states away or less.
None of the places matched at are really "competitive" though
only on SDN.
For PCOM, there's a typo under general surgery. There is no St. Barnabas in Brooklyn. There's one in the Bronx NY, and another in Livingston, NJ.

Has anyone else noticed the rapid increase in DO students matching ACGME Diagnostic Radiology (and many at great places)?
Any speculations on why? I personally wonder if this field will become less desirable and competitive as the job outlook for this field isn't as comforting as it once was.

That's pretty much exactly it. Prospects sour, MD doesn't think it's as "Prestigious" anymore, competition goes down.

There must be some other reasons into it than that; IMHO, a combination of effects like:
- DO graduates, too, in general have started to become more competent applicants.
- The current trend to unify the residency programs must have been positively affecting how PDs now see the DO applicants.
- Programs' PDs must have started seeing the DO graduates more equally to the MD ones now than before (due to the effects above.)
The results might differ a lot among DO schools, as they do among MD schools, though.
To say the least, that's a great match list from UNT HSC TCOM this year. Congrats!

And before we know it, DO graduates will be allowed into Law school because we all know nothing persuades a jury more than a good back rub.🙄

You really should preface your posts by saying that they are based solely on your fantasy and not reality.
the previous poster hit the nail on the head. radiology is becoming less competitive because of concern about the job market. as a result more spots were available to DOs... in fact ~60 spots didn't even fill.
as for the residency "unification"....
1. this has absolutely no effect on current ACGME PDs. zero. it changes nothing. the only possible difference might be that PDs of less desirable ACGME residencies might get more apps from DOs who would typically only enter the AOA match and others might have to dip further into their match lists as some MD students (US and IMG) start considering formerly AOA programs in more desirable locations.
2. i don't understand why this "merger" is being celebrated by some DO students on SDN. this is an absolute disaster for DOs since it amounts to nothing more than a hostile takeover by the ACGME. DO students will lose their protected residency spots and will be forced to compete with IMGs and US MDs. In addition some of these AOA spots will be shut down which further decreases the pool of DO-friendly residencies. Currently DOs have a completely separate and protected route wherein they can do fellowship and get board certified without ever having to compete with MDs (particularly US IMGs). When this is gone don't be surprised if the DO match rate takes a hit as PDs look to US MDs or IMGs who may be more competitive than the DO students they were forced to take in the past.
...rant...
Might I suggest an article, light reading but I think you'll find it revealing...

It's mostly the the fear that radiology reimbursements are going to crash soon. If you look over at the radiology forum or auntmini, there's a lot of, "the sky is falling" type nonsense. Additionally, radiology in recent years has become more DO friendly and there are more DO Acgme program directors than ever. It's only going to get easier for DOs in radiology. Everyone in my class that matched acgme radiology, except one, had either only a comlex score or a sub 230 usmle score. Only one had a score in the 240's, which is averagish for radiology.

I was going to say a bunch of harsh stuff about those comments but realized it accomplishes nothing. So instead, if other premeds decide to read this...... know that none of the above is correct. Fortunately other med students have corrected the above statements

This. This exactly.
I am so sick of hearing how DO students think they have any kind of future outside of practicing family medicine in a rural area. To think that you can be a competitive applicant as a DO is not only delusional but also irresponsible, and I thank the SDN elders (1000+ posts) for their wisdom and for putting us in our place. Any DO who matches into a specialty outside of primary care in the middle of the Sahara desert will do so only at the mercy of the MDs.
I got news for you dreamers: the jig is up. Now that the ACGME owns all AOA residencies, all MD graduates will automatically be given these residencies if desired. Listen to the posts above; they have talked to all the PDs in the country and have high post counts.
The time is near for us DOs. Repent and make friends with the MDs...for it is their mercy that will free us from going into peds in Antartica.
I hope the MD students will tell us which specialties they are losing interest in so we know which specialties we have a chance at matching into.

Strong work!!!!
But what if we actually want Peds in Antarctica?

I have verified with the SDN elders that the MD students currently do not want to match peds in Antartica, so DOs still have a shot at matching there. However, should MDs find pediatrics in Antartica prestigious, kiss your dreams good-bye.

yeah, same thing as gas right now. I had at least 5-10 programs on my list that I had marked as, "have never taken a DO," that I've seen take their first DO this year. DOs seem to making significant ground in gas and rads

To current students, which specialties give you the impression they are becoming more competitive than in the past? I know ortho has gone through the roof in the last ten years (I read somewhere it was long viewed as the stereotypical jock specialty)... perhaps EM? others?

You could counter this by asking why this phenomenon is happening only in radiology? If what you say is true, why are there still so few ACGME general surgery matches?

Over the past couple years, the number of DOs matching ACGME general surgery has increased with each cycle. This is undoubtedly an indicator that MDs are finding surgery less prestigious.

When this is gone don't be surprised if the DO match rate takes a hit as PDs look to US MDs or IMGs who may be more competitive than the DO students they were forced to take in the past.
the truth is probably somewhere in between these.

Not sure if srs...
Maybe they just find gen surg less appealing when fun stuff like urology is right around the corner.
Here's some results from LECOM by specialty. The list of hospitals will probably be released somewhere around match day 2014.

It's not a disadvantage for competitive DO students because they can apply to both matches after the merger. Also, DO's were about to lose access to ACGME residencies entirely so it's not a disaster that this option was preserved.

DOs were about to lose access to ACGME fellowships, not residencies, unless they completed an ACGME residency.
I don't think having both matches at the same time will make that big of a difference for competitive applicants because they already, for the most part, choose to forego the DO match and apply to the ACGME match. They likely wouldn't apply to formerly AOA residencies anyway because they are far less desirable in the most popular specialties (IM, peds, anesthesia, EM, etc). Those that stand to benefit are the average DO applicants who can apply to both AOA and ACGME residencies and have more choices. The below-average students are the ones who are going to suffer the most since they were basically guaranteed an AOA residency and will not fare as well when those residencies are opened to everyone (and some are possibly closed).
The people that could benefit are students applying to highly competitive AOA residencies - think ENT, NS, ortho etc.
They can now still apply to residencies with a long standing DO tradition and gamble on the historically exclusive MD residencies without forgoing a safer option.
I think it's great.

I would argue that they have a whole lot to lose in fact. ACGME residencies in those fields don't take that many DOs and aren't going to change their mind because they're getting more DO applications. As the number of US MD graduates increases ACGME PDs won't have any trouble filling their programs with US MDs if they choose to. With regards to AOA spots.... once they are open to all applicants you have no clue what's going to happen... there's no longer an incentive for PDs to stick to just DOs. If I were a DO applying to one of these small fairly competitive fields I would much prefer a smaller pool of applicants where PDs were forced to take DOs.
Eh, in the long run a level playing field will only lead to more emphasize on board scores and less on the degree.
first of all how is this a level playing field?
second, even within the US MD schools where the playing field is "level", reputation of med school plays a big role in residency matching so why would the US MD preference magically disappear?
Right. There's no way of knowing if DO PDs will take MDs just like we don't know if MD PDs will take more DOs. I feel like you seem to think suddenly traditional DO programs will snatch up MDs. I think the bias will go both ways.
I find it hard to believe DO PDs will willingly cause the self implosion of specialized physicians.

There are more than enough spots to go around, even with increases in MD and DO med schools and class sizes. Sure, there aren't enough AOA spots for DO grads currently but there are more than enough spots overall. FMGs are the ones that stand to lose spots. I could see some spots being more competitive, but I doubt any US grads will go with out a match simply because there are more US students.

What are you basing this on?
Data indicate that the total number of allo + osteo grads will exceed the number of current residency positions by 2019.

Hmm.... sounds like an empirical statement at best. Just because you say it and believe it doesn't make it factual. In fact, my good ol' handy NRMP PD survey (pdf) I like to make many references to shows that in EVERY specialty, the name of a school was only considered to have any influence in half of programs (54%), and by specialty, was nearly statistically insignificant in terms of the amount of effect it has on a candidate matching.
EDIT: and those stats are only for "highly reputable" schools, so imagine for your average university program... probably doesn't mean much

I was talking specifically about the smaller residencies where supply < demand like ENT, ortho, etc. Also as the number of US MDs increase it'll shift the supply and demand of other residencies like EM. Finally, the fact that there are numerically enough spots to go around until 2019 doesn't mean that it won't be a problem until then. There is extreme maldistribution of residencies when compared to med student preferences.

it matters. look at the match lists (though you probably won't know how to interpret them). i'm not going to argue this point with a pre-med. after experiencing the match (and of course talking about it endlessly with other people) it is very obvious that school reputation has a big effect on residency apps ....unless of course you're top of the class and have a 260+ step 1.
