Hey all,

Over the past 4 years of med school, I've been sleeping on the carpeted floor. Now residency is about to start, I'm getting a bed with my new dollars. Any suggestion for bed and mattress? Prefer cheaper values and shipping to my door.

For 4 years in med school you slept on the floor? Dude why? Just take out $200 more for your first year CoA.

Anyway. Casper with the gel thing is pretty good, a little hot but not that bad. Apparently Purple is pretty good too. Both cheap options delivered to your door

How did you..... eat dinner on the carpet floor? I mean, did you just go all four years of med school without eating dinner? You’ve gotta eat dinner at least a couple times a month in order to prevent stress. I mean, I guess you can eat dinner on the couch but that’s just lame dude!

I got one of those expensive, premo TempurPedic mattresses with the cooling top. It's pretty awesome.

But it was also $3k for a king, so I dunno. Personally I think a mattress is something worth investing in. After all, you spend a third of your life on one.

Buy one from amazon.
500 or less will get you a foam mattress that will atleast last you 4-5 years. 200 will get you an inner spring matress plus 100 for memory foam topper.

When selecting a mattress use fakespot to make sure that the reviews are legit.

Aww man I need a cooling top. I swear my sleep efficiency and quality would increase by 200% if I had one.

Edit: my autocorrect changed swear to sweat, which still kinda works lol. But I edited to fix anyway.

this is a great way to get bed bugs.
some parts of the country it's not a big worry, like with Lyme's disease and other things, how much you have to worry about it can be a function of geography

I wouldn't get a secondhand mattress where bed bugs were endemic. Even then, I might just consider the risk of the mattress having bed bugs. As I understand it, there are ways of ensuring it doesn't have any (sealing it in a special bag before transport). But I'm not the expert on bed bugs because we don't really have them here.

Med students and physicians living like they don’t have access to better amenities is odd to me.

Like I’ve had classmates insist on the cheapest dish washing liquid or single ply toilet paper, yet they roll around in a beemer.
It's almost like different people had different priorities.

It’s one thing to prioritize your money. It’s another to sleep on the floor for 4 years

This 100%, i need to pamper my butt with the softest TP out there. But theres somethings I just dont get, like wtf is the point of a headboard or like multiple pairs of casual shoes. Different strokes for different folks.

OP gonna agree with other users. Check out amazon, you can get a king sized memory foam shipped to your door for under 500$. But i’d go to a mattress store first to see what kind of mattress youre looking for. Some people like memory foam, some people like springs, and some people like a combo of both. Pillow toppers are always an option as well.

Related side story: I messed up once and starting messing around in a sleep number store checking out mattresses, and started chatting with a salesman who starting hyping me up on everything finding my sleep number and letting me check out all the diff mattresses and bells and whistles. Once i realized that these things werent it my price range is was too late and I already wasted a ton of this guys time oof. So obvious advice, but unless you got 10k to blow try out mattresses in one of those wholesale mattress warehouses or something not the fancy places in the male lol.

Unless you’re into that kinda thing

i used to cheap out on dishwashing liquid at the dollar store but then i realized how much better dawn was for pre-soaking and scrubbing off caked in cheese

Amazon is a good choice. I don't really like memory foam but they have tons of those with great ratings. I have purchased two innerspring mattresses with frames on there for under $500 for a king and under $350 for a queen.

What is fake spot?

For about a year I slept on an air-mattress, then it got a hole in it, so I pumped it up really high before going to bed and tried to fall asleep before it deflated and I hit the floor.

My point is, you can get a pretty decent air-mattress for like 50 dollars.
The mental picture of going to bed high up from the ground and then waking up deflated on the floor is pretty much a great metaphor for the whole med school experience, amiright?!

I mean the clear answer is yes, choose a bed.

If you can wait for move-in you could get a legit bed and frame with mattress, it’s discount galore in summertime because everyone’s moving.

I just checked and it's almost 1k for a queen from casper....

I bought my Queen mattress from some mattress store for like 300 bucks and it's lasted for 7 years going into 8 (dip in the middle is bad, so i probably will buy a new one soon) but yea it's something you can invest in and it's worth it in my opinion.

Saatva has a really good exchange policy, you can try the mattress for up to 120 days and if you don't like it, you can get a refund or exchange it for a different one for $99. I ended up with the ultra firm one and it has been great.

wow no offense but how cheap are u to sleep on a carpet, there are so many cheap mattresses on amazon and they are actually good, and u can buy a really nice air mattress at walmart for 50 bucks if u are really that cheap. There is like no excuse for not having a mattress, you study so much in med school, the least u can do is get decent sleep. I hope this is joke, bc its one of the most absurd things I have seen. Sorry no disrespect, but wow.

I'm a serious cheapskate, and even I didn't do this

I think sleeping on the floor is better than sleeping on a cheap mattress. Cheap mattresses can wreak havoc on your back. Good decision OP

Are you familiar with the term "necro bump"?

This thread stopped a year ago.
