had my phone interview 8/24, received invite for onsite interview on 9/6, ~ 2 weeks after. Yeah, for those who still have to do their phone interview, I think it is way better to "wing" it, although I would recommend reading the Mayo Model of Care that is on their website, that way you can provide an intellegent response to "Why Mayo?"

congrats ilovehedgehogs!!!

I phone interviewed about two weeks ago too, worked my butt off to get all my application stuff in as quickly as possible, and in the end, ONE profs letter of rec is holding up my application. I hate my life.

good news: my premed office is sending the final packet of letters electronically tomorrow. I feel so-so about my phone interview -- but mayo should have my complete packet tomorrow, maybe even next week I'll knw the verdict.

I had my phone interview last Tuesday (9/5) after they asked me for my letters of recommendation and to confirm the phone interview date about a month earlier (8/9). After the interview, they told me I would hear back from them in 10 days, which I believe would be...tomorrow. 😱

Hey I had my phone interview this past week and I'm a little anxious to hear from them too. 10 days. Here is to hoping for Mayo and entering class 2007 😍

I haven't heard back from them yet, which is kind of freaking me out (isn't it already almost 5 p.m. Central Time?), but maybe they meant 10 working days, not 10 days total. If that's the case, I'll still have a few more days until I get the verdict....

I'm pretty nervous about it because I felt like I only did so-so on the phone interview, but I'm hoping my letters help pull me through.

I thought I did terrible on the interview too. For two of the questions, I asked the lady to ask me at the end because I could not think of anything at that moment. So, dont worry too much. Hang in there bud...

Here is the Mayo info I know: Last year they had approx 700 phone interview. This year they are cutting it down to 450. That's a huge cut, so if you made it, that's awesome. I had a phone interview last year and I was asked almost all of the posted Q's above. Word for word. I also made sure to remember the proctor's name and at the end say "Thank you very much, Cindy, you have been great."

It is a bit awkward since they can only answer a few "yes" or "no" Q's. They really won't elaborate much on anything. There are about 25 Q's total. You don't need to answer everything. It is ok to say "No" and begin moving on. I had a few awkward pauses at the end of my answers which felt wierd. There isn't much flow to the process.

Like they said before. Be yourself. Laugh if you need to. You can still be professional and articulate and have a good time. It shows you are not a robot.

They don't have preference for Mn, Az, or Fl residents.

I had an onsite interview last year, but was rejected this year because I didn't show enough improvement. Its a bummer but it's my fault that I didn't stress the activities that I would be doing during my year off.

Good luck with the phone interview. If you got one, you deserve it. Be yourself. Have fun with it.
 
Can someone tell me something about the onsite interviews? How does one prepare for it?
 
For those of you who have heard back from Mayo after your phone interviews, how did Mayo contact you to give you the news (e.g., e-mail, phone, etc.)?

It's been 10 working days since my phone interview, and still no word yet...man, this is really getting me worried!
 
Just a clarification, they DO prefer Arizona, Florida, Minnesota residents (instate for them). Half or our class is from these states.

And to correct an earlier post, mayo has class only on weekdays (not on weekends)

owenmichael -- do you have any idea how they classify in-state? i can't imagine it's based on what you list on your amcas; it seems like they want to find people who might stick around and live in those states. i didn't list any of those states as my "official" amcas residency, but it's really obvious that i'm from mn. any idea?
 
I just got the 'not selected' email; no phone interview for me.

I suppose that they did not like that my only extracurricular was 24 hours of shadowing. I hope that somewhere that I applied does not care about extracurriculars.

Oy, just had my interview. I was really nervous during the entire thing. I don't feel I did too well, but it isn't up to me to decide - thankfully. I felt it was really short too ~18 minutes which kind of worries me. Oh well, can't ruminate on it too much.

I think to prepare, definately try to stay with a student host, they will teach you everything you want to know, and you will get to see what type of people go there. Also, read up on the Mayo Model of Care, its on their website.

Thank you!!! i was the only one, but i heard there was going to be two on friday (22). I think the groups get larger as the season goes along

Did they have you sit in a room with a bunch of seats with them making ppt presentations as if the room was full? That would be awesome! :laugh:

haha, no, but that would have been fun! An administrative person (who was so so nice) sat with me and went over everything.
 
just completed my phone interview this morning. i clocked in at about 21-22 minutes. i feel like i may have rushed in my diction a bit, but i also feel like i said 99% of what i wanted to say. did all the rest of you use up all your time? im just curious!

Rochester is not as bad as everyone makes it. It has EVERYTHING you need, alot of good places to eat and all the stores youd ever need. The only issue is that it has no associated undergrad campus. Thus, there are some decent bars here but not alot. There are a couple of clubs, but its not big city style.

I did mine in about the same time...she called a little late. She seemed glad that I finished early, so I wouldn't worry. Quality, not quantity. Good luck!

Thanks!! I had no idea how the phone interview went - I felt like I was just babbling and she told me I needed to start "shortening up those answers" so I felt pretty wary about it afterwards...but I guess it was okay!

Well, if you're gonna be a pessimist, then yes, it means they hate you.

I'm in the same boat as you - I also interviewed on 9/5 and haven't heard back from them, even though I was told that I'd hear back from them in 10 days since they already had my letters.

I'm wondering about it as well, but I'm trying not to stress too much....

Hmm, well let's just hope that the people responsible for listening to the 9/5 interviews are just slow. Or better yet, maybe the tape player malfunctioned that day and I'll get to do mine over again. I think my interview SUCKED.
