OMG just saw melissaind's post. 18 spots given out already!!!! I am going to cry. Really. I feel the tears already. How come they had so many people they wanted at the end of December? Why so many so suddenly? So there are only 10 more spots? Is that about right? And really, who would EVER turn down Mayo? They would have to be crazy. Even if there was some chance that some student prefered Harvard or something....they wouldn't find out about Harvard until later this spring....which means waiting waiting and waiting for us. Sniff. I am so sad. 🙁 🙁 🙁

Thanks for calling Melissaind. 🙁

Don't be sad. Jane said something about starting with 34 spots...I can't remember exactly because she gave me a lot of info. I also forgot to post that she told me the adcom was about 40 applications behind in ranking and 24 more people interviewing this week. Like the Mayo students say, we need to be patient (easier said than done).

Hey Melissa, thank you for calling!!! And no, you are not known as "the girl who stalked Mayo 😉 I just knew that you had more info than I (or the rest of us)...congrats on your 2nd acceptance!

Yes thanks so much for calling. I was wondering too...are they meeting next Thursday or only once every two weeks?

By the way, I'm sure that they were not in a rush to put you on hold. I hope we all make it.

34 reg md spots

Thanks kmrake...I am still waiting for an acceptance at one of my top schools. Are you planning on attending UNC so far?

Rax- sorry she didn't tell e when they would be meeting next.

NWA- thanks for clarifying that. That is what I thought she said but I wasn't sure. I guess that means there are 16 spots left. No worries...I think there are less than 16 SNDers waiting.

As for the calling, it was no problem...I am stressing as much as anyone. I won't be calling until Feb though; I promised Jane I'd give her a break 😉 .

The way I see it there are anywhere from 18-24 spots left considering the 2 omfs spots do not come out of the 34 regular MD spots and that we do not know how many of the acceptances are for the research track. (Melissainsd please correct me if Jane told you about the MD/research vs. MD spots) Just to boost everyone's mood a little! :luck:

So far it's UNC, unless Emory were to knock my socks off with financial aid...
I just can't stomach being $240,000 in debt.

I hope we all make it too, guys; I will keep all of us in my prayers! 🙂

Sorry, Jane said 18 spots were taken of the 34 (she included omfs in the count).

Kmrake- wow, is Emory that expensive?

So it's safe then to say there are 16 spots remaining?

With all those fast acceptances it seems like it's not true that most peope are put on hold. It seems like this year most acceptances are handed out right away. Am I reading this right?

Yes, unfortunately...tuition and fees are around $34,000, then with living expenses, etc. they calculate a loan amount of $60,000 anually

No thats not true.
1) First clarification: 42 spots total.. 6 are always mdphd, 2 are oms. 34 md spots. As far as I know, one of those spots is already taken by someone who deferred last year.
2) Remember that Mayo hands out EXACTLY the number of acceptances as spots in the class. They fill their class by March 15th, thus by this date only 42 people will have received acceptances. A waitlist is then formed with some students after this date and the remainder of candidates that had onsite interviews getting rejected. I think about 10 people get taken off the waitlist every year (although this varies).
3) No, most of the people that have received acceptances have probably been on hold. For all we know, someone who interviewed on the first day may have bbeen accepted in this last round after being on hold for months.
4) They are not handing out acceptances faster, they are pretty much right on track. I remember that they hand out their final 5 md spots in the class on exactly March 15th. So I would guess that they are going to give 5 acceptances a month from this point on.
4) It ain't over till its over. Although I remember how much it SUCKS to wait, you could hear anywhere from tomorrow till late june!!! I became really apathetic because I was placed on hold for months until I finally got word. It feels so much more amazing to receive that call when you aren't even thinkin about Mayo!! Good luck guys!! Hang in there!

Just received the ranking email....

Does anyone know whether the phone interview score contributes to your overall ranking? Just curious; thanks!

I am not sure if anyone has responded to your question yet or not, but just in case I wanted to let you know during our on-site interview Jane told us that the phone interview score does not contribute to your overall ranking; in fact I believe she mentioned that after the on-site interview is granted the phone interview is no longer an active part of your application file. Hope this helps.

Thanks OwenMichael! You cleared up so much confusion. Seems like when us Mayo-fanatics are left on our own we start spinning out of control a bit. Thanks for getting us (or me at least 🙂 ) back on track. I know I need to chill out and stop obsessing. 😉

if i could offer my take here (and i base this on pretty much nothing)...
The feeling i get from mayo is that despite the process being rolling I believe a person does not have a lot better chance interviewing at the beginning versus the end... since they have spots available until the last meeting (as said earlier in posts) and since almost everyone is ranked/put on hold first, it seems that Mayo hand picks pretty much everyone to their liking (that is too say, in my opinion, I do not think there are many - if any - people out there that mayo really wanted to give a spot to but did not because there just was no space left)

if you get in they loved you, if not, anyone who earns an interview at mayo is probably going to end up somewhere, so congrats!

like i said, i base this on nothing (except i suppose my own desire to not worry to much about something i have little control over) but if anyone reads this and gets a little less stressed, then it was worth the last few minutes of typing...

Another thing - any SDN people in my interview group monday? if so when are you coming into rochester? - i am going sat night and am looking for something interesting to do during the day on sunday...

and another - if anyone lives in rochester and has a suggestion (where to eat what to do, etc)... pretty much for anything, i would appreciate 😀

Melissainsd - turns out i will be staying in a hotel at least one night - so i think i will take your advice (about 3 pages ago), so thanks again!

ok lunch break over... back to work👎

wow, lots of activity in the past few dayyys. I kind of agree with the above post. When I scheduled my interview, Jane reminded me that their process is "rolling" when I tried to find a later date that would be more convenient. Now it doesn't seem like it matters that much.

Last years group had 2-3 SDNers accepted by this time. Why no SDN love this year?

That is weird, Jane told us that the adcom sees the score, but has no idea what your specific answers were, so the phone interview counts a little (at least the score).

Mikeinsd- good luck and have fun!

Hey, how long did it take to hear results from the phone interview for most of you?

hey y'all - and it seems as though there are not many of us left checking this thread... I am sitting in the colonial inn accross the street from mayo clinic, starting to worry far to much about the interview tomoro. I must say that everything people have said about this place is right... wow... gorgeous. Anyhow I promise I am not getting paid or anything for this plug, I am just trying to be helpful (when i arrived in minneapolis I had no idea how to get to rochester, or where to stay)

once in the airport, head towards baggage claim/ground transportation. once you get near the end of the way, instead of a unified 'go this way to ground transport' sign, you hit a place where you must go straight for buses or right for vans (you will see an information booth directly in front of you at this point). Hang a right, go up the escalators, and you should see the 'Rochester Direct' sign - it will cost you 49 round trip or 27 one way, and it departs about every hour or hour and a half.

in rochester there are a bunch of hotels, (i borrowed the phone book from the guy at the shuttle desk to find some numbers), at each place i said "i am interviewing at mayo, i heard from someone you have a good interviewee rate, what is the best price i can get for 1 person tonight." Days inn was 59, another place was 35, and colonial (507-289-3363 mods if i am not allowed to post this please tell me i will delete immediately) was 30. I lucked out and it turn out the colonial is litteraly accross the road from mayo (but i couldnt know that from the phone book). Honestly it is a little old and run down, but all i cared about was finding a cheap place to sleep, and the people here are very nice, so it worked out.

yeah so thats that - i am bored and cant sleep because of the time zone change, but i am gonna go give it a shot

ps - someone told me by pm to eat at Newts if i liked burgers, and wow, I ate there, best burger, litterally, that i think i have ever had.

Best of luck to you today, Mike. I hope all goes well!

hahaha mikeinsd?!
is this mike i am thinking of? crossroads?
you own this thread, don't you?

you own this thread, don't you?

on the contrary, i just stop by from time to time to write long posts that people probably never read...

(if i had to pick an owner, i would go with melissa at this point, she knows whats up)

and i am not sure if i am who you are thinking of... the only reference to crossroads i can think of is a crossroads shopping center in the town where i grew up, so if that is what you are referring (sp) to, i may need a bigger hint

:luck: to everyone who has yet to see this great school

oh okay nevermind you must be a different mike
good luck to u

Any news on Mayo??? Are they meeting this week?

just got my "post-phone interview rejection" email a few minutes ago. as weird as it sounds, i couldn't help muffle a laugh as i read through it. it was expected anyhow.

gluck to y'all!

So I've been thinking...Current Mayo Medical Students swear that some students (10 or so?) get into Mayo off of the waitlist. I've been wondering whether any of you can give reasons why you too could turn down Mayo? Is it the weather? Is another school the favorite? Just wondering what you're all thinking out there and whether there's a chance you too could pass it up.

I wouldn't care if it was in the Arctic, I know that there is no place I would rather be!

Jane did say during our interview that the top two reasons for not going were:
1)weather
2)the fact that it is not part of a larger academic institution

When I interviewed Jane said the biggest reasons people declined were the weather and if they had a spouse/sig other. Since Rochester isn't big, it's hard for a spouse to find work, as opposed to a larger city.

Mikeinsd, did Jane give you any update on how many spots were left when you interviewed on monday?

I feel the same way. That's why it's so hard to believe that there is any hope for waitlisters...yet all Mayo students say it happens.

Interesting to hear Jane's input.

i had my phone interview today..prob one of the last ones to go (late applicant)...jane told me the last few were very special to her. hahahha. she seems so friendly

anyway i thought it went pretty well. it was a lot of fun..but some of my answers were more clear than others. i hope to hear sooner than 3 weeks. and interviewing in february is much better than never interviewing at all. i would just love to get a wonderful tour of the facilities and meet the students. i am crossing my fingers for the amazing opportunity.

best of luck to all! :luck: :luck:

I w/d prior to my onsite interview basically because:

1.) I realized that I wanted to be somewhat close (within 5 hours' drive) to home.

2.) I wanted to study within a larger university structure.

:luck: to you all.

My drawback is that it's Rochester...as a single person, it's a sucky place to live (but that wouldn't be my deciding factor, just a con).

can give reasons why you too could turn down Mayo?

Well, I mean really, how good can it be if it's free? 🙂

Does anyone know what day they will hand out appointments this month?

i have an interview near the end of january, and im starting to wonder if there is any point in me attending...do you think i could ask them before my interview if all the spots were taken to save me some time and energy?

I think that you should definately go! You are one of a small number of individuals invited, and there have been many posts pointing to the fact that people who interviewed late have been accepted! Don't fret, and enjoy the trip to Rochester! It is an incredible school with incredible people, and the experience will delight you.

i just got my onsite invite today...so i'll prob have an interview in feb! and i'm SO going to go!! without a doubt..i'll have nothing to lose. and i'll get to check out mayo.

i kind of just want to contact cindy myself, rather than wait for her to contact me.

good luck to all! :luck:

Bananaboat, when did you do your telephone interview? I'm still waiting to hear results from my Dec. 20th and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't constantly checking for it.

Oh by the way, was it the normal, 1:30am email? Thanks and congrats on the onsite!!

Of course you should go if you've been invited. Mayo is a great place. Just don't wow them too much because I want to be sure they accept me. Just kidding. But really, I hear they prefer students who wear polka-dotted suits and speak only in pig-latin. Just a bit of friendly insider advice. Lol.

Still looking to find out when the next meeting is. I guess none of us know...

i actually had my phone interview yesterday. so this makes no sense to me. i'm thinking it might be a mistake  , but the e-mail does say "DEAR (my full name)".

That's a quick turn around. How lucky for you!

Mikeinsd, how did the interview go the other day?

Also, Mellissaind, where have you been???

Glad to see that this thread's pretty active... you guys are my intel 😀

hi hi again all - a couple things...

it is very true that people (ten last year) get taken from the wait list - this has been confirmed by students and by jane herself (to me, in person)

i also know, from the mouth of Jane, that the committee is meeting tomoro (thursday), but that they are 40 people behind in ranking, so i dont expect they will get to me...

from what i heard the number hadnt changed since the last time melissa was posting... still at 18 I believe (this will probably change tomoro when they let me in... )

my interview went great, wow, Mayo is the most impressive thing I have ever seen... I agree that some people may just not fit there (it is a tiny town and it is cold, and yes, what they say is true - like 1/2 the people i met who were students at Mayo were married - ok not 1/2 but close) but they seemed great anyhows, I dont really have aproblem with married people, they can be fun too!

and yes - the thing with the polka dots and the pig latin - it would totally blow them away 😉

and yeah - melissa - where you at?

Mike

Hey Mikeinsd,
So glad you had a good interview at Mayo. That place is so special. Thanks for all the news. I'm glad to know that the admissions committee is meeting tomorrow and that the waitlist does really get movement. Really cool.
-Xibye

Hi all (especially Xibye and mikeinsd)! I must be on here too much...you notice when I go out of town! I feel the love 😍 I'm in New York this week for some interviews. Don't worry, I am still full of Mayo love. I'm glad you had fun Mike; it truly is amazing isn't it? Good luck to us all. I won't have much to contribute to this thread (other than moral support) until Feb because I have resolved myself to refrain from calling Jane until then. If anyone else gets more info please post!

I bet money melissainsd calla before feb!jk Only 21 more days until you can call again! jk Seriously though, thanks for keeping me informed melissainsd and the rest of you. I loved mayo also. I am just a little too shy to call.

Anyone know the pattern for hearing back from phone interviews? As in why somone who just had his heard back and I haven't from about 3 weeks ago? Hope they didn't forget about lil ol' me 😳
