Also don't worry about needing too much time on the way out of Rochester. The airport is tiny and it takes 5 minutes at most to get to the gate.

If you've got free time, aside from the self-guided art tour, you definitely want to check out the Mayo brother's original offices at the top of the plummer building. I love that building and the study rooms are really neat. There's some great examples of early medical devices as well that are worth checking.

i have my interview next monday and i still didnt get the email about the kahler grand discount... about when did you guys get this? do you think i could just book a room or should i book it with the discount in hand?

i have a feeling that they forgot to send me that email with the hotel discount.

Hmm I don't know about Mayo but for other schools I never received discounts per se...I just called up the local hotels, said that I was interviewing at X med school and asked if there was a special rate and the answer was yes.

Hey, yeah, they don't send you an email about the discount. Just tell Kahler that you are interviewing with Mayo and they will give you a discount (that's how it went down for me at least). I think my rate was around $55 plus tax. Hope this helps and good luck! :luck:

edit- much like BluePhoenix said, I would also recommend visiting the Plummer building where there is nice little area that shows a lot of the history of the Mayo Clinic. You should get a sheet in the morning that tells you directions to all of the places you should visit during your free time.

Seriously. This is long, but here's my return Mayo travelogue. I was on a Saturday 5:20pm flight to Chicago from Rochester, arriving at 6:30pm. I got to the airport too early because Kahler told me I needed to be there an hour and fifteen minutes before my flight even though I'd already checked in and printed a ticket online (you don't need to be there that early, of course). I ended up having to check my bag due to a small container of moisturizer that Ohare hadn't been concerned with. I (stupidly) decided to stick my sweater, coat and laptop in my luggage, and checked it. Then there were delays due to icy weather in Chicago, so they kept postponing the flight. Meanwhile, I find out that one of the other interviewees I'd gotten chummy with on interview day was on my flight (on his way to a Northwestern interview), as well as about 20 or so med students who had been interviewing at Mayo for orthopedic surgery residencies. It was fun to hear their stories and the variety of med schools they were from (AECOM, Pritzker, RFU, UIC, Cincinnati, etc.). And the other interviewee was convinced that the man at the other end of the airport lounge was dean Dr. Grande who gave a power point on the curriculum on our interview day. When he walked by we smiled real big, but he just looked blankly at us and kept walking. He then left the lounge area and disappeared.

Overall, I really wouldn't recommend getting stuck at the Rochester airport. The four vending machines we found were all sold out of all drinks, the cafe was closed, and the "gift shop" was closed too. We had to exit security to find a vending machine with something in it. I got a "Salted Nut Roll" ("Great Source of Protein!") that all of the med students had a kick passing around. When you're stranded in an airport for hours, silly things become very funny.

So, they eventually re-ticketed us, but by this time it was snowing quite heavily in Rochester, and they were worried about getting the wings of the plane de-iced. A really nice med student who boarded the plane in front of me (ok, so he was quite a hunk as well as a gentleman) offered me his winter coat because there was a huge snowy gap we had to stand in as we boarded the plane, and I was idiotically wearing a thin long-sleeved shirt with no sweater or coat. I asked him where he was from as he oddly poked at the snow on the plane, and he said "Hawaii." I asked if he'd come to Mayo if he got the residency position, and he said with amazing vehemence "HELL NO!!!" It was pretty funny, and obvious he had had no idea what winter was like before he flew out for his interview. I wonder what some of the warm climate students who interview in September at Mayo think when they get accepted and then spend their first real winter in Minnesota.

So, we finally managed to leave around 8:30pm. I talked to a bunch of the med students who all sat around me on the plane, and got some more good med school advice. Anyway, we finally landed around 9:30pm, and I found out that they somehow ended up putting (JUST) my luggage on the flight that left after us from Rochester. My younger sister was picking me up, and had been circling the airport for two hours due to misinformation from the airline, and was furious when I said it would take another 30 minutes for my luggage (if that - the following plane hadn't landed yet). So, I filled out a form for them to send my luggage to me tomorrow. We got 15 minutes away from the airport on the highway when they called to say that my luggage was in, and that they wouldn't send it - I'd have to come back right then, or tomorrow to pick it up myself.

We went back and I ran up to the missing baggage claim desk, and who was there, but Dr. Grande! Since we were the only two people at the baggage desk, I re-introduced myself, and discovered that he had been on his way to give a lecture in the Middle East (he was THE lecturer), but had missed his connection and was now going right back to Rochester. He was vehement about avoiding American Airlines at all costs and to take Northwest when traveling between Chicago and Rochester. As a side note, I learned from a fourth year that Mayo's ER takes all Northwest airline in-flight emergency calls (they're also, of course, a trauma 1 center that takes patients from Wisconsin, Iowa AND Minnesota). Perhaps there's a bias toward Northwest because of that? 😉 Anyway, he asked what I thought about Mayo and my interview, and we chatted a little. It was fortuitously bizarre in a good way - almost surreal even. He was really nice. When I got back in the car fifteen minutes later my sister was fuming because she said she saw me (through the airport glass walls) chatting with some guy "forever." She actually thought I was making it up when I said it was a dean from Mayo. Took a bit of convincing. Anyway, we got home at 12am. Whew.

Sorry for the ramble. I guess the moral of the story is to beware viewing the 42 minute flight between Chicago and Rochester as a quick trip in the winter, and that Rochester = Mayo. As in, it really is a small world. I don't even know why the town is called Rochester to begin with. They should do away with the pretense and just call the town "Mayo, MN" 😀

Was that...errrr....sarcasm? Should I delete the post to spare others from having to read a tome about my travels? Probably takes up as much time reading it as it took me to get from Rochester to Chicago. Sorry about your finals. But I'm sure you'll ace them.

Ive never gotten too bad of a grade and right now i have a C in my neuroanatomy class and I honestly don't feel like i can pass this class ... haha ... soo no .... im not gonna ace it ...

I stayed with a host the first night, and the Kahler the second. Some of the hosts will offer to let you stay a second night with them when you set it up - just depends. The Kahler is really convenient, and perfectly fine, albeit pretty "dated." I'd probably just stay there again for the great location and free wifi - and cheap Mayo rates. Another interviewee was staying at the Hilton I think. There were nine interviewees for my day, and five stayed with hosts.

So, for those of you that interviewed awhile ago, does the Mayo-pining wane a little with time, or are you just as anxious as ever? I'm trying to convince myself not to expect to hear anything substantive until March, but I fear that is an irrational goal. I'm going to get ridiculously excited when I get ranked about a month from now, even though it's just a perfunctory step.
 
this is probably a stupid question, but for those of you who flew directly into Rochester...how did you get from the airport to the Medical school? Is there some sort of shuttle/taxi service?

Yes, there are shuttles, and I believe they run pretty regularly. I think I recall seeing a shuttle desk in the airport - you can probably just arrange it there when you get in. I'm not positive about timing though, because I didn't take one. My host picked me up when I arrived, and I took a taxi when I left ($25). The ride by car only takes about 15-20 minutes. I'm sure someone who took the shuttle will also chime in soon.

There is a shuttle waiting for every incoming flight. For getting back to the airport, hotels should have a schedule of pick-up times. I know for sure that one pick-up spot is the Kahler Grand. Hope this helps!

Edit- I believe the price of the shuttle was around $11 one way.

No, it totally does not wane, even with acceptances to other schools. SDN, and people who go and interview and tell us how awesome Mayo was 😛 just make everything worse! I think everyone in this thread is head over heals for Mayo. Good luck!

Everyone gets ranked (4-6 weeks?) after their interview. Then, at the next adcom meeting where acceptances are given out, they'll either receive an acceptance outright, or receive a hold email. If it's a hold, they'll be considered at each subsequent meeting until they receive an acceptance, or until March 15th, when they get alternate status (waitlist) or rejected.

Mimi - you didn't receive a ranked email yet? Hard to tell where you're at in the process, since I'm not sure when you interviewed.
 
i interviewed just before you on 12/3 and stayed with one of the girls that is on that big trip to chicago--i think jane said we should expect to be ranked in january--but it seems like--according to this thread that they will try to get to us before the new year??

anyways i will keep everyone updated--mayo is for sure my # 1

Yeah, Jane mentioned to me that there is a slight chance that we could get ranked before they give out the five additional acceptances they plan to give out by Jan. 1, but that it's more likely we'll be ranked in January. A lot of it will depend on who we interviewed with (i.e., if they're both present at the meetings, and how fast they get through other applicants up for a ranking). Good luck!

Mayo is now my top choice as well. I swear, it's contagious. It must be in the water in Rochester.

Just to clarify, I was called on Thursday, 12/6 as well...I think about the same time as tenori and frickonastick...9:30am west coast time. Also, I recieved the rank email on 10/25.

Woah!! I try to keep my distance from SDN so I can finish up my last paper of the semester, and look what I come back to in the Mayo thread!! I love the list, Phoenix 😀

If only the committee could pull some super-fast ranking kung fu before they have their holiday break!

I interviewed yesterday and I think the total acceptances figure they gave was 17 - 6 "accepted" and 11 "appointed." I could be wrong though.

I was very, very impressed, but a little worried about the dating scene there, which pales in comparison to everything else about mayo, but it's still a lingering doubt.

If I could choose any school at this moment, though, it would be Mayo by a long shot!

so whats the difference between accepted and appointed

does appointed mean that mayo called them but they haven't formally accepted their spot?

That's how Jane explained it.
 
yeah, Jane said they contact you to "appoint" you, then you become accepted when you respond.

my interview was on monday, and mayo is pretty much the most amazing place ever! i had a great time, even in the snow 🙂

I must have Mayo on the brain in the worst way. I dreamed this morning that it was sometime in the summer, and I was in New Orleans with friends for the weekend, looking for a place to live. Guess I was gearing up to go to Tulane. While we were looking at a place my phone rang, and the number looked like it might be coming from Rochester. I answered, but the reception was horrible, and then it disconnected. I frantically ran outside waiting for the phone to ring again, but nothing happened. I was unbelievably anxious (and couldn't tell anyone why), but we left for the next apartment anyway. On our way there the phone rang and it was Jane! I was indescribably ecstatic! Then my phone rang again and it was AT&T telling me my bill was overdue. This was reality. Ugh.

I obviously need something else to be going on in my life soon or my subconscious is going to give me an ulcer. So, how are you guys doing? 😳

YD - Thank you so much for sharing! Seriously. Misery loves company. 😳

Also, I just spoke to Jane (to confirm she got an email I sent) and she said that they're having trouble getting quorum for a December adcom meeting due to the holiday, so it may or may not happen. If it doesn't happen, they won't be giving out the five more acceptances mentioned to go out before the New Year. So for those of you waiting, it may be a little longer if they don't get a committee together this month. I figure those waiting to be ranked probably won't get ranked until January.

And she said that they've received about 3700 applications this year, and her inbox is virtually bursting with the last minute secondary submissions (today was the last day to submit). I don't envy her task. Also, they're going to add a couple of more days in February for interviews (but interviewing will be completed that month - they will not interview into March). It also sounds like they may be adding a couple of more people than usual onto interview days - I think she mentioned 12 people would be interviewing on Monday. She also said that not only did they receive more applications this year than last, but that the quality of the applications was much higher too. For what it's worth, it's going to be a hard cycle guys.

Don't fly American Airlines to Rochester. If you get stuck in Chicago, you are 6 hrs away from your connection, whereas w/ Northwest, if you get stuck you're only 1.5 hrs away (Minneapolis). Also if its something simple like fog Northwest will usually send a charter bus down to RST to pick everyone up and take them to MSP whereas AA will just cancel the flight and you're stuck for the day.

And November, that's great advice. We're (Chicago) being hit by a horrendous winter storm right now. I feel bad for anyone that is flying to MN through Chicago today or tomorrow for a Monday interview. Good luck custard! Hope your travel goes smoothly.
 
I'm a new SDN member but I've been following this thread for a few weeks. I just got an interview invitation from Mayo at about 2:00 am! The interview is scheduled for January 14.

Staying up late obsessing over medical school applications has finally paid off! I really need to get some sleep...😴
