Mayo 2008!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ahhh i really dont know...i LOVE mayo 😍 --ucla's draws are largely the urban setting and my strong desire to work with the urban underserved (real reason i decided i wanted to be a doc) and its relative closeness to my family and bf. im going to la to see how i like the vibe of the area and plan to revisit mayo soon. i donno really for sure but everyday i lean a diff way...when i DO decide tho ill def let either school and sdn know..as i know there are awesome folks who want to know for sure where theyre going next year and i wouldnt just hold a spot unless i was really really considering taking it.

Hey, no pressure. You should definitely take your time figuring that out, and no one here would fault you for that. I just figured it might give some people a thrill to learn that there are in fact acceptees who are considering schools other than Mayo. I'm sure there are those of us that imagine this could be the first year that there's NO waitlist movement whatsoever! 🙄

kiara08 i don't think u need comments at all! you're a great candidate, and i'd love to go to wake forest! i didn't apply to too many places because i didn't think it would be worth the money.

looking at your profile, i realize there's no rhyme or reason to their picking. why wouldn't u get into George Washington? oh well! u have some good options to pick from.

thanks, i'm definitely happy w/how everything has worked out (besides throwing away boat loads of money) but getting into mayo would make it WAY better.

i didn't apply to GW, but I think you might mean Georgetown...

I really didn't like the school for some reason and I think that definitely came across in my interview...

No news since March? It's so sad to have the Mayo thread so neglected... 🙁 I'm excited to see the waitlist movement and crossing my fingers for you SDNers!

Thanks, frick! I agree that it's nice to see this thread bumped. I figure it'll be around 4 weeks until there's much movement. And actually, I'll be out of the country (Buenos Aires) on vacation from 4/25-5/10 (instead of taking a July vacation in light of my Mayo waitlist), so hopefully I'll be sufficiently distracted and won't be glued to this thread like I otherwise would be. Regardless, I'm guessing I'll be finding an internet cafe or the like to check in (and check my email) the week of May 5-9th since that's when I'm guessing some movement might start. I should be back right as this thread picks up again.

And I've got my fingers crossed for everyone too! Vicarious Mayo thrills are always appreciated. 🙂

Hey guys// I am spending my summer in a research lab at mayo clinic, MN for two and half months ... can anyone please guide me for housing with fair prices...

(( i know there is this housing forum for such requests but thought mayo are around here))...

Help! and thanks in advance =)

Hmmm...short term housing in Rochester tends to be a bit expensive because they jack up the rent rates for shorter leases. I know a few places, like the Kahler, have deals for students and a good number of the summer students seem to stay there...will you have a car? The program may have some suggestions, otherwise there's the usual...craigslist, postbulletin.com.

I'm guessing everyone received the email Mayo sent out today:

Thank you for your continued interest in Mayo Medical School. We sincerely appreciate your patience with the admissions process. We understand how very difficult it must be to be on the "waitlist" of a school you truly have a desire to attend!

As of today, we have not made any appointments since the class was filled on March 15th. Appointments will be made as soon as an accepted student withdraws. This could happen anytime from now until matriculation day, July 21, 2008.

I'm guessing they sent that out because they'd been receiving a lot of calls (although not from me this time) to determine if anyone had gotten off the waitlist yet. I really doubt there's going to be much (if any) movement before May, but it's nice of them to send an update. Where's that twiddling thumbs icon?

hahahahah ... opps ... haha ... crap

Wow, I just saw this posted in the schools thread for Mayo yesterday:

wow, i got a call from mayo letting me know that my merit scholarship has been changed into the dean's scholarship!!! i love mayo!

I would have guessed that meant that someone with a dean's scholarship has just withdrawn, but based on their email yesterday, perhaps not. Regardless, congrats to caffeinaholic - pretty amazing!

I just pasted that post in here because of the tempting suggestion that it might mean someone withdrew yesterday after they sent that email out. Unlikely, but it's nice to think about. 🙂

I've just sort of been lurking this thread and rooting for you all, so I thought I'd contribute that I know 2 people who are highly planning to withdraw in favor of other schools. I hope you guys will be offered a chance to fill those spots soon! :luck::luck::luck:

Thanks for the positive thoughts and delightful rumors! I'd offer you luck with your waitlists too, but I'm thinking you won't need it - that full tuition Pitt scholarship ain't too shabby. 😉

Bump!
Any news? I just sent Mayo an update email today.
I wish I knew if anyone got off the waitlist yet! I'm putting off looking for apartments until later just on the slim chance of a Mayo acceptance.

is anyone going to be attending the gathering for underrepresented minority students this weekend? or have any information on it? marcy said that i could attend if i am in rochester this weekend...and i am trying to figure out the schedule to book my extremely last minute flight plans!! for my extremely last minute 'revisit' any info would be helpful!! =)

Hi Mayo-lovers,

I just withdrew... with great reluctance 😳, but hopefully one of you will get some good news!! Actually, maybe two of you will get good news, as I had also had a dean's scholarship.

So, good luck everyone 🙂 :luck:

thanks for letting us know. best of luck with wherever u decide to go!

Since mayo likes to preserve diversity in their class, maybe you could give us some details as to your major application profile? something like an MDapps summary would be amazing! Im desperately hoping that you are a ~21yr old white male business student at a large state school, there cant be more than one on the waitlist!

I'd really prefer if you're a ~22 yr old white female neuroscience student/athlete at a research institution...

i talked to marcy todaya ... 3 people have made it off the waitlist this week!!!

so sad ........

Thanks for calling and posting, kuhlguy. I'm on vacation, sitting outside at a cafe in Buenos Aires lamely checking for Mayo news on my phone and thinking of you guys. Sorry no SDNers have gotten in this week so we could all experience some vicarious euphoria.

I'm happy to be with you guys on the waitlist, but as I've opined before, the odds of a 30-something woman withdrawing is slim to none. I believe they generally only have 1-2 per class, so I'm pretty much out of the race. As always, luck to everyone waiting!

Were they already called?

Yeah, we've had a few new people join the facebook group, and I know for sure one was just called yesterday off the waitlist.

Good luck everyone! I'm still crossing my fingers for you SDN Mayoites :luck:

Thanks for letting us know! You being a girl gives us female waitlisters at least a slightly higher shot, I think?

Please don't use so many exclamation marks. You almost gave me a heart attack. 😉

Does anyone else wish that Mayo would cut the waitlist in half come mid-June? I can't imagine they'll really keep all 100 of us in anticipation until July 21. Seems cruel and unusual, no? I would guess that most movement is in May, with possibly a little movement in early June, but how would there be much movement in late June or July? Come to think of it, how would there be ANY movement that late? I would think that the trickle down effect from people declining multiple acceptances would have ended by then, and the only movement I could imagine is if someone decided not to go to medical school altogether, and that caused some musical chair shifting. If so, when do you guys think most movement will end? Early June? Mid-June?

Ok, back to stuffing myself with chorizo and bife de lomo. Luck to all!

i think thats prob just in case of emergencies?? anyways according to the mayo fbook group and people on facebook that i have been stalking that are on the mayo fbook group (haha) there either already have/or will very soon be more withdrawals...so really anticipate good news soon..i hope it all goes to you guys! =D

It genuinely saddens me to say this, but I am withdrawing my spot from Mayo... It really does break my heart because I loved *everyone* I met at Mayo (especially my awesome interviewers) and was so inspired by the mission of the school. I also received the dean's scholarship so hopefully it will go to one of you well-deserving and amazing folks. If there is a female interested in serving underserved populations and also in health policy, you may be getting a call soon.

:luck::luck::luck: to everyone, let's keep in touch. If you're interested in health policy, let's build collaborations. I really loved Mayo so I may be coming for one of my sub-I's or residency. Minnesota is a pleasant place and *everyone* is nice, you guys will love it 🙂!

Now, if only you were in your 30s.... 😉 Good luck wherever you end up attending!

Trust me when I say that age has nothing to do with it...

Hmmm. Well, I thought they keep an eye on maintaining the "diversity" of the class, and that's how they decide who gets off the waitlist. I figure diversity in this instance could mean geographic, ethnic, age, gender, interests, etc. And since from all accounts I've heard, they've only got one or two 30-something females per year, that's my contribution to diversity. I figure my JD would add diversity to the class too, but I can't imagine what type of applicant they'd sub me in for in that instance. Perhaps someone who had an interest in their joing MD-JD program? Or someone with an interest in health care policy? Thus I thought of lilsweet. 😳

So, are you saying my understanding of how this process works is completely wrong? If so, please enlighten us. 👍

Hey guys,

I talked to Marcy yesterday morning - I got in! and they're giving me the dean's scholarship. I actually got a phone call from Marcy on Monday night, but I was away from my phone and she left a message asking me to call her back. Even though I was so excited to hear from her, I didn't want to assume anything until I talked to her the next day. Needless to say, I didn't get any sleep that night and I called her at 8:01am.

I sent in a letter of intent Monday morning (ironic, I know), so I'm definitely going. I wish the best of luck to all of you on this list! Especially to you, Phoenix, because you love Mayo as much as anyone I have ever met. I hope to meet many of you next year!

BulldogZA

Wow Bulldog! That's fantastic news!!! Thanks for posting here to let us know and share the vicarious thrill. I'm SO happy for you! :hardy: Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for the chance to be classmates!

Sorry... I did not mean that it had 100% nothing to do with it... I just meant that, as far as I understand, the AdCom is not obsessed with replacing someone that declines with an exact match from the waiting list. They do look back and reassess who they would want to fill that spot, and it does not have to be an exact match, there are many factors taken into account.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the info. Also, do you recall if there was any waitlist movement in past years in June or July? Just curious, as I can't really imagine how there could be.

I just spoke with Marcy. So far, 12 people have been accepted off the waitlist, and there will be more calls today and tomorrow. I asked how many, but she couldn't say. I recall last year about 15 people got in off the waitlist, so who knows....

Also, I asked Jane if there is traditionally any movement in June or July, and she said that while last year there was none, in past years there has been a little. But generally, things have pretty much settled by the end of May. :luck:

I've been consigned to assuming a Mayo rejection since my alternate list notice, but after calling Marcy just now my heart is beating double-time and for some reason I've got this very silly hopeful feeling again. Ah Mayo, why do you have to break my heart so? 😍

Good to know. I'll be staring at my phone/not getting any work done the rest of this week. Good luck to everyone! :luck:

Also, it sounds from the Vandy vs. Mayo thread that Mayo gives people two weeks to decide once they've been accepted off the waitlist. So there could definitely be some more movement over the following two weeks as well if accepted waitlisters decide to decline.

Ugg. I just spoke to Marcy, and they're done calling people (unless more people decline/withdraw in the future). She said that about 17 people got in off of the waitlist so far. Pretty crushing, but I would guess the odds now are truly slim to none. More like none in my mind, but of course I'll hold out some slight hope until the end of May. How are you guys all feeling? 😳

thanks for the info phoenix.

I really liked mayo but I guess it is not meant to be.

Anyways I wish all of you the best of luck with this waiting process.

I have 4 more waitlists 😛 with no acceptance yet haha

I got in!!! Dean's scholarship!!!!!! Marcy just called me... I almost crashed my car haha.
😍😍😍😍😍😍

Thank you... I can't believe it 🙂 Sooo happy.

Weirdly, like a minute before Marcy called I was thinking about her calling me!

This is probably a silly question that was answered elsewhere but is the Dean's Scholarship given every year?

It's 25,000 and the first year's tuition is $29,100 sooo basically I pay only 4,100 this year??
