Got the rejection (or, as Mayo nicely puts it, "not selected") email Wednesday at 2:35 am. It was actually a very nicely worded and positive rejection notice. I never expected to get in, but it was worth a shot. At least it wasn't my first rejection (that honor would go to Indiana University).
sorry, chad! first rejection must hurt a little. i can't wait for my first one! 😛

Good luck on other apps, chad. Thanks for your useful advice in all of your threads.

Thanks guys for the condolences! Honestly I expected the rejection, I just had no idea it would come so soon. I'm not "down and out" yet!

You have done a great job getting your apps done early.

You should be fine. Interest in Mayo is exploding - they have a tiny class - getting in there is like winning the lottery.

this is getting rather depressing already

second that. someone needs to get a lor request to cheer up this thread.

Hmmm...I saw Dean Porter yesterday and she looked happy?...maybe they're getting ready to send out LOR requests in a batch or something...the first years just started this week so I imagine now that they're all set, they can move on the to next class.

I'm tempted to have mail from the Mayo Med School routed to another folder so I can't see it during the day...but fingers crossed guys...the programs here is awesome and some of us will get in.

haha yeah. let's just hope for the best.

BluePhoenix! I just realized I did my UG education very, very close to you! The one with the comical bird mascot 😉 Anyway, just saying hi :hello:.

Hello 🙂 Did you go to the southernmost 5C?

Yep, yep! That'd be me. And my sister goes to school where you got your PhD. How neat.

So, I heard MN's cold, eh? I've played it warm for the past 5 years myself (currently finishing a master's myself)...

It does get pretty cold up here... While walking from my dorm to the academics buildings (a mere 100 feet or so) one morning last winter, the snot in my nose froze, and because I was late to class my hair was still wet and it solidified into locks. I think it got down to about -30 or -40 around here last winter with wind chill. ;-)

It's not too bad, it's been mild lately...though we got a lot of snow last year. You don't notice it so much because it eases into really cold usually...it's not like it goes from 75 to -20 overnight...and it's usually only really cold for a month or so. Mayo has tunnels so you can pretty much go anywhere downtown without going outside.

If you're active, you don't notice it much. I manage the women's hockey team here and after a good practice, the cold air feels really good. Same with if you like skiing or snowboarding or anything like that. I know people that bike to work every day here...even in the winter...but I do think they're a little nuts.

I may be following in your footsteps...I got IU's letter yesterday. If Mayo's is coming, it seems like it's coming soon.

haha -- I should have known better than to read SDN while eating lunch. I just laughed so hard I nearly choked on my sandwich.

Good to know that there's mild weather, too, BluePhoenix. Anyway, if I am fortunate enough to hear back from Mayo, I imagine I'll be spending enough of my time studying where the cold won't even phase me 😉

I grew up north of the twin cities...in the winter we used to try and get our hair to freeze sticking straight up in spikes and whatnot while waiting for the bus. They didn't cancel class until the windchill dropped to below -70...which it usually did a few times...so it does seem milder..at least to me. As an added bonus...really cold weather makes you feel extra strong as you can easily snap metal in half (usually your car key)...

Hahaha, did you live around Lake of the Woods? I remember last winter they were down to -70 with wind chill...

This summer has been much more mild thus far... We've only been up to about 94 in the Twin Cities area, and lately its been mid-to-high-80s with higher humidity. Hopefully we don't hit a whole week of upper 90s (I'm praying!).

 Wow. MN almost sounds like another planet. I don't think I've seen snow since I was 12 (and even then, just for a day or so). And -70 degrees is definitely out of my range of experience. :wow:

Whew. Heh, well, odds are good that Mayo will probably relieve me of the necessity of acclimatizing via the non-selection letter.

No, not that far north...but the 80s were a cold decade for winters.

I'd be all for some hotter weather if we got some good storms to go with it, seems like every time we get close down here it goes either north or south of us. There's less water than up in the cities so it's a bit less humid...makes it a lot more bearable.

Agreed. It's a lot more bearable this summer, so far (or so it seems). I love storms, but we nearly had a run-in with the awful storms that hit the northern suburbs... The tornadoes hit five miles directly west of us and five miles directly east of us... Whew! Then in winter we get hit with blizzard! Haha.

...I love fall.

Well if you DO make it, you'll be happy to know that -70 is very uncommon... In a typical winter in the Twin Cities' northern suburbs winter pushes the temperatures to the lower -20s or so, give or take. I've only ever seen one winter that went to around -50, and that wasn't for long. And this all factors in wind chill, haha.

I must say though, the first snowfall up here tends to be an exciting day. Winds of change (and those of chilly weather) seem to flow through communities and attitudes, looking forward to winter.

...But then when it gets cold everyone complains and asks for summer (and, of course, the converse is true for summer).

Having lived in the rockies, cold doesn't really faze me (I'm fully familiar with plugging my car in at night), but I am jonesing for some sunshine...any of you MN people care to comment? Are the winters grey as well as cold, or are they more like in the rockies with sunshine almost every day?

Well...despite my wishing for a big storm, it's been sunny pretty much every day this summer so far. It can be cloudy a bit in the winter but there's a good number of sunny days where it looks deceptively inviting outside (until you realize it's freezing)...kinda depends on the winter and how snowy it is. It won't be 6 months straight of clouds. Rochester is pretty windy, so they tend to blow by pretty quickly...most of the time.

There are definitely days that are clear, but also the cloudy. It's obviously more cloudy than summer or spring (minus stormy days), but there are clear days.

So true, and those are the refreshing winter days! 🙂

I've lived in MN my entire life and you guys are blowing the winter weather WAY out of proportion. Sure it's cold, yes it snows, but it's not that bad. But if it does happen to scare a few people away from applying, please continue.

Depends how old you are...if you were born in the late 80s...you probably don't remember the "good" winters...but no, it's rarely below -10, except maybe a few days a year. Regardless though, if you've lived here all your life, of course it's nothing. But if you're from a warm climate...it's cold and snowy...and might take some getting used to. I grew up in MN, then lived in southern CA and NYC...they have NO IDEA what winter is...though it was pretty funny to watch some of my native Cali friends head out to their interviews in the north in the dead of winter. I've got friends that bust out the scarves, hats, mittens and down coats when it hits below 70...to them, it's a big change.

i wear shorts at 50 degrees, no lie.

This I can no longer do. Actually, I could only do it while I was nestled away in the mountains of Virginia for a few semesters. It's 80 here and I'm cold.

weakling. 80 and cold? haha, wow.

I adapt to ambient temperature rather quickly. I somehow managed to walk across campus in a vinyl miniskirt (read: cools quickly, also halloween) in 40-degree weather. I think I would've been fine if it weren't for the wind... or that colder layer of satin. Cold, cold, cold, cold.

I'm with you there. I've got a rule that I don't wear pants until it's snowing, then I start wearing shorts again at 32 or above. I love cold weather, haha.

For those wondering about the temperatures in the winter months, take a look here for various locations:

I'm totally with you on that...of course, once it hits above freezing, it feels pretty tropical. I'm not a fan of hot weather though...I'd be fine with it never going above 70.

👍

That's literally what I say to people (though the word order may be arranged slightly differently), and just about every single one of them thinks I'm nuts.

Has anyone been rejected from Mayo PRE-impoverishment yet? I was verified a couple of weeks ago and still no demand for moo-la...

Mayo doesn't even look at your application (much less reject anyone) until you pay them. So the answer to your question is no.

I heard otherwise, apparently they send the request for fee to about 60% of applicants.

My fault. Seems odd though. How are they going to reject you if they don't even look at your appplication? (Unless it's purely numbers) If not, then what's the harm in sending an email to everyone requesting payment? Oh well. The verdict is 40% don't get that email.

I would guess...they just glance at the mcat and gpa...maybe they have some LizzyM where anyone with under a 60 doesnt have to pay?? idk.

I heard the initial screen was just numbers. I have to admit I was suspicious about a screen that happens before they make you pay a fee to look at the primary. Makes it look like a scam haha.

If it was merely numbers, I would have a hard time believing that I am in the upper 60% of people applying to Mayo. Maybe they consider the PS as well?

average applicant has a 28 and 3.4...so the top 60% might be lower than that. I would guess a LizzyM somewhere bw 60-62 used as a cutoff.
