It's recently come to my attention that there are no White Castle's in the vicinity of Rochester. While this isn't a deal-breaker for me at all, it's still something I'm very worried about.

What are some great restaurants nearby and does anyone know more about the curriculum? I remember reading that one subject or block is studied at a time and then there's a 2 week break between blocks?

There's some in the cities. There's also a few fast food places that are open late/early. There are a few good restaurants (though you'll have trouble finding one open if you're looking for Saturday brunch downtown)...most aren't open too early. There's not too many fancy ones, if that's what you're looking for but they seem to be opening more and trying to expand the choices a bit so it is getting better.

The curriculum is usually a 6 week block of classes with a final at the end (supplemented with quiz scores and such) and then a 2 week "selective" where you can shadow or travel or whatever. So you kinda study hard for 6 weeks and then you get a nice 2 week break (rinse and repeat)...they also try to make selectives over the major holidays so there's a good thanksgiving/christmas/spring break and all.

Hey (normal) Phoenix,

Based on the news that Mayo may not send secondaries without interview invites, would you recommend sending letters of intent after your primary application?

Additionally,

does anyone know how fast Mayo is, in general, in reviewing applications and either sending secondaries (or interviews for this cycle, I guess) or rejections?

I think that's going to have to be your call. But whether you decide to send it now or after you're screened (i.e., this year screened = interview invite), I would definitely make it a letter of interest rather than a letter of intent (the difference being the additional statement "If accepted I would immediately withdraw all pending applications."). A letter of intent is really much more appropriate post-interview when you've seen the school first-hand.

As for how fast Mayo moves in processing applications, I'm not sure how they start out (or rather, how fast they get through the initial pile in June), but I recall last year in September/October they were extremely quick. But given that they're using a different process this year, who knows?

im applying! i got interested in mayo during high school... i heard they have the applicant pool of harvard but only like 40ish seats for just MD... id be so excited if i got a chance to interview!

Wow - your mdapps sounds amazing. Congrats on your accomplishments, and good luck!

Thanks, that's super helpful! The curriculum looks really interesting, and the selectives seem like a great way to get exposure to fields you might not get to do rotations in years 3 and 4.What's the typical day like? Sounds like there are ~4 hours of lecture per day, and then I'm assuming most days have the clinical integration, and then sometimes lab maybe when you're taking anatomy.

Oops! I meant a letter of interest, haha, my mistake.

Verve's MDapps makes me incredibly envious, motivated, and small, all at the same time! ;-)

Mayo's curriculum and setup looks amazing... Someday...

Hey guys! I'm applying to Mayo this cycle as well. Just wondering if the school is a bit of a long shot for me. Can anyone read my MDApplicants profile and let me know what you think? Thanks!

Well you've certainly got the GPA and ECs nailed down, but that MCAT might give you a bit of trouble at Mayo. I'm not sure if they have automatic cut-offs or not - maybe someone else can chime in? Since the rest of your app looks good, you'll never know until you try. It's a long shot for you, but dreams can always come true. :luck:

I know they've taken people with lower MCAT scores, but they usually go for the 30-38 range, and the ones with lower MCAT scores tended to have high GPAs at very well ranked schools. You probably want to raise it up to at minimum a 30, otherwise it may call into question the difficulty of getting a 4.0 at your school. I'm not saying it wasn't hard and you didn't do a great job in school, only that if the MCAT supposedly equalizes GPAs across schools, you might take a hit for it. Either way, Mayo is pretty mysterious in terms of how they pick students so if it's a place you really want to go, then you should go for it...there's always a chance. And you do have a decent amount of other activities as well that can help compensate for a weak MCAT...

I'm not really qualified to gauge your chances are Mayo, but I think I can say that I am thoroughly impressed by your list of extracurriculars! You're obviously devoted to service throughout the community and country! I think that deserves recognition, for sure.

does anyone know when they start screening/asking for money/inviting ppl for interviews? good luck to everyone!!!!

I called Mayo MSTP office and they said they do not have any secondary for MSTP students (but from what I gathered that there may be additional essay for non-MSTP student....I am not 100% sure on that). In any case, no secondary for me. They will just ask for information sheet with normal questions like what have you been doing since application etc.

Hope this clears up some confusion on this thread.

BTW, I would love to go to Mayo with Mr. Bradstein!

So I just got off the phone with MMS, and had a chat with about the process. So here's what I learned:

1. AMCAS applications have not been received in their office as of yet, and they do not expect to start receiving them for another 2-3 weeks.

2. The adcom does an initial screen after they get the first round of AMCAS applications in, and then will send an email to selected individuals to submit the $85 fee and instructions on submitting the LOR.

3. They said that there was no actual secondary application. So basically they want your money and your letters if they're interested.

Hope that helps everyone!!

That actually sounds like a much easier process than some other schools🙂 Sometimes I don't really see the point of secondaries. Its essentially the same thing as primary. The schools are obviously selected because the student is interested in...location, program benefits, school prestige etc....

I'm glad that mayo is cutting through the red tape and just going from primary to interview..

Hey,

I just received an email for Mayo asking me to pay the application fee...but no request for LOR's. That doesn't make sense, if they don't get AMCAS for 3 weeks, how could they have already screened me? Anyone else get this email as well?

i wrote to the committee yesterday and the lady told me that we only have to pay the fee if we pass the first screening...guess that was not right....?

No, you're right. They do perform a screen and are proud to say that they are quick about that. I'm the one who was confused. Sorry. I'm still confused. Maybe they received the initial application sooner than expected? I have nothing to offer to reduce the confusion. You can shoot them another email, or give them a call on Monday. From what I've read, they do have a friendly office staff.

Sweet, I guess I made the first cut 😀

I also got the email and immediately paid the fee. It sounds like there's actually 2 screenings: first to get the payment, second for LORs and I'm assuming an interview invite. So it goes
1. numbers screen to pay for further consideration.

2. Look at AMCAS PS and activities -> decide on interview and ask for LORS

Here's what I got after paying:
Thank you for the fee payment. Your AMCAS application will be considered within four weeks or upon receipt of your MCAT scores. When additional information, such as letters of recommendation, is needed for your file, you will be notified via email.<br>We appreciate your interest in Mayo Medical School. Guess I did too... with my 3.4 GPA

The e-mail I received:

Mayo Medical School has recently received your application from the American Medical College Application Service. Thank you for choosing Mayo as one of the schools you are interested in attending. We sincerely appreciate your application to and your interest in our school.

An $85 fee payable in United States currency is required to start the review process of your AMCAS application. Electronic payment should be submitted at
http://www.mayo.edu/mms/payment-usb.html. If you have any questions regarding electronic payment, please contact us at [email protected].

The deadline for receipt of the application fee is December 12, 2008. If the fee is not received by this deadline, your application will be closed.

... Sure doesn't sound like any screening has been done.

Yay I got it too. I hope they do screen and this isn't just an 85 dollar donation I'm making lol

What Dr. Yoda posted is the way I thought Mayo did it - require a payment before considering the application. Then I read posts from last year's thread where they said they do a quick screen first. The conflicting information has me confused. 😕

I think they mean review of your secondary application, but I could be wrong, in fact I probably am!

There is no secondary unless you're invited for the interview, right?

Who knows - apparently they're changing it up from last year anyway... In any case I was still up at 2:37 ET so I paid the fee the instant the email hit my inbox. Hopefully they'll be impressed with my speediness. :meanie:

Anyone apply to Mayo and NOT get the email (or get different email)?

Maybe the initial screening goes something like this:

Did this applicant apply to Mayo? If yes, send email for $85. If no, ignore.

I think they do screen because my MCAT date was left blank on my AMCAS and I just got a letter from them to update it within 3 weeks or wont be considered.
That's the first school that noticed that error. More Reason WHY I LOVE MAYO.

Me 🙁. I didn't get it. Hopefully it's just because I retook the MCAT. I have a 3.97 GPA and a 35 on my first MCAT, so I sure hope they're just waiting for my new score.....sigh.

whoah, you retook the mcat, because you weren't satisfied with a 35? Good luck, I hope your second score is higher!

Ha. I know it sounds silly. But yeah, 35 was a MASSIVE drop from my AAMC practice test average. Thanks! I hope it's a bit higher too.

So they are making me pay 85 dollars on top of the 30 dollars that AMCAS charged...to just read my primary application???

This is crap, mayo is not that special.

*im still gonna pay it though🙁*

At least they dont put up a facade application to waste your time too like NYMC and probably many other schools.

Since all these medical schools preach professionalism, shouldnt they be held to the same standards?? I, for one, dont find it very professional to take a person's money when they have no chance at acceptance...I guess its just part of the game.

But it isnt like Mayo is the only school that does this. Many upper tier schools will take anyone's application+secondary fee, only to throw it in the trash when they find out that the applicant has a 30/3.5. Mayo's screening process may be more comprehensive or not, but at least they dont ask you to waste your time filling out paperwork just to be rejected over #s.

Right I definitely agree....Thats why I think all schools should emulate schools like Wake, VCU, UCs, UNC, etc....

I definitely didnt mean to attack mayo, just this secondary process in general.

Yea the huge lack of free primary (aka #s) screening is extremely annoying.

I don't think they do a very intensive screening for the $85 "secondary"...I think it's more just to check you've filled in the blanks and have a halfway decent set of stats....like nothing extremely low. I know they take a range of scores so I doubt they're really picky with this initial screening.

They seem to change up their secondary process every year (as least the past three years) so who knows what they're going to end up doing this year in terms of screening and secondaries.

Last year we had to pay the $85 just for them to look at the primary. It sounds like this is the case this year too.

I just got off the phone with the mayo admissions office. I wanted to check out the process for myself. The admissions person gave me this information. The primary IS screened on the basis of GPA & MCAT ONLY!!! Those who make the cut are invited to submit $85 for further review. Those who make this cut are asked to send in letters of reccomendation. Finally, a few interview spots are given out to those who mayo is seriously considering. She gave me these stats from last year:

Initial Applicants: 3900
Applicants that Were told to hand in $85: 2400
Applicants asked to Send in LOR: 500
Applicants interviewed: 250
Applicants accepted: 42 or so.

I know that kind of applicants that mayo must get. Sheesh...hope I make the next few cuts.

Very interesting, thanks for that info. 🙂

I wonder what the timeline on these cuts is. I just sent my bloo....$$, hope we don't have to wait a month to hear if we should send in LOR.

Patiently awaiting my rejection letter.

I'm sorry but I'm 100% certain that selecting applicants for secondaries is not based on any stats (grades or MCAT). It's purely based on the application as a whole... AKA the MAYO MISSION that they always talk about. Mayo continuously reject people with extremely high stats only after receiving their AMCAS. They basically just have to like you and find you special, and that's more than any other school that looks for applicants that fit their program....

Well considering they only cut out less than a 1/3 of the applicants..I dont think they were looking for any spectacular numbers.

Maybe a LizzyM of somewhere bw a 60-63.....Theres a certain pt where someones stats just arent gonna cut it, no matter how great the rest of the application.

hmmm...I never got an email from Mayo but maybe it's different since i'm applying MSTP? The lady I emailed told me they don't download/processing apps till August.

Yeah, MSTP is a separate program with different admissions and all. I'm pretty sure they look at all the applications before making decisions since it's such a small class size.
