Wait so are ppl putting Mayo and schools that we haven't heard from yet on their FAFSA form? Is that what we're supposed to do even though we still might be rejected? I thought that we could just add schools on later or something . . .

you can add it later or just add it now. I'm adding all four schools I interviewed at + Stanford, which I haven't yet received an interview at but apparently they are still offering interviews. I haven't received a rejection and many have, so there's a small chance.

Really surprised, actually. I thought my interviews went really well and I even wrote strong letters of intent.

Maybe I'll see you guys at Rochester in a few years, I'm definitely going to apply for a cardio surgery or general surgery rotation at Rochester during M3/M4.

Now I got to start composing a letter of intent to WashU, I couldn't even bring myself to write a letter of interest to WashU until I had closure from Mayo.

So, I read the email and thought at first that it was another glitch in their system. "The review of your AMCAS application has been completed. I regret to inform you that your application will no longer be considered."

Kind of a flashback to that email a couple of weeks ago about our interviews being canceled.

But, as I read the posts above, it seems that the ride is over. Although, for those of you who got the 👎, How Friggin Ghetto is the subject line on that email?! "Mayo Medical School - Not Selected" What the Hell?
Minnesota nice my behinder! Couldn't they have taken the time to craft a gentler let down email, as they have sent so many?

Oh well. It's cold as S--- here in Rochester anyway. I'm movin down to where the sun shines and it's never -20 degrees.

I'm so sorry some of you got bad news. Hopefully you all have or will have acceptances at schools you'll find yourself equally happy at. 😳

For those that got alternate list status, congrats! But alas, I know the wait is excruciating. From what I recall, the vast majority of the alternate list movement is in May, so I'd guess it's going to be about two months.

And for what it's worth, for those applying next year, Mayo will be changing the timeline for applications so things won't be drawn out so long (interviews will end by mid-December rather than mid-February):

Mayo Medical School will begin accepting applications for 2010 on June 1, 2009. Please note, our deadline will be moved up for the 2010 application cycle. All applications must be submitted through AMCAS by October 15, 2009.

Mayo Medical School operates on a rolling admissions policy, so it's advantageous to submit your application as soon as possible. For 2010, invitations to attend onsite interviews will be sent beginning in late July; and all onsite interviews will be completed by mid-December, 2009.**

This is subject to change, but I believe they're intending on filling the class by mid-January, and sending out notifications of alternate list and rejections at that time as well. So it sounds like the whole process will be moved up two months.

If they moved the start date up by two months, school would begin in May. I think July is early enough.

I can't speak for admissions, but no, I haven't heard anything about classes starting earlier, and I agree with DoctorDeMan that it wouldn't make much sense. I believe that it has more to do with streamlining the process and getting back to applicants sooner, which I think is a nice change.

Though I am not on the waitlist I wrote not one, but TWO love letters to Mayo. I was rejected... and they were strong letters and I took a lot of time on them. They indeed were just not that into me, which was even more hurtful because I was led to believe my interviews were stellar.

I hear Mayo likes Letters of Intent, but I would only suggest not taking too much time to write one, other than the necessary checking for grammar and spelling. I've gotten some sweet LOI advice from people who actually got in, so if you have any questions, PM me.

If you are dead set on Mayo, write a letter of intent. That's what I did and I got in. It isn't going to hurt, especially if you're on the waitlist.

If you aren't dead set on Mayo, I'm not sure how much a letter of interest would help.

Almost certainly student selection. In past years (not sure about this one), 95% of Mayo's students get their first choice residency. That is ridiculous. I doubt you will find a single residency in the country that would discriminate against a qualified medical student from Mayo. It's Mayo.

You will find the same regional bias at any other medical school. For example, nearly all of UCLA's, UCSF's, and UCSD's grads match in California because that is where they want to be. They could probably match in high-tier east coast programs, but instead choose to stay in CA.

I think saying that 95% match first choice is quite an exaggeration. I'd like to see where that is published. Last year Mayo reported "better than 90 percent of its senior students annually "match" within their top three residency choices" (http://www.mayoclinic.org/news2008-rst/4719.html). How many residencies do most people apply to? I was under the impression that it wasn't that many, depending on specialty, making top 3 a little less impressive.

Also, does Mayo typically publish their match list? I haven't been able to find it this year.

Also, I've heard that where you do residency is more indicative of where you will end up compared to where you go to medical school.
