I've been looking into taking the MCAT and noticed how much money it'd cost. The test is $210 and the practice tests are $40 a piece. Has anyone ever looked up how much they make from us?

Get used to shelling out the dough, OP, because unfortunately, this is only the tip of the iceberg. The MCAT is one of the LEAST expensive things you'll need to pay for on the road to becoming a physician. 😱

yeah, step 1 cost me something like $450 and step 2 next year is going to be over $1000.

I think the biggest sticker shock I've gotten so far was getting sent the invoice for my first semester's tuition. The school is reimbursing me, but still....it's scary as h*** to receive a bill like that. I also have calculated that so far I've spent about $1000 on my textbooks for M1, although that sounds worse than it really is, because we'll use some of them next semester too. And even for the app process, the MCAT is a relative bargain. AMCAS alone cost me over $700, and that doesn't include secondary fees, interview costs, revisit costs, etc. I bet I spent $5000-$6000 last year on applying to med school.

🙄 I'm making the point that med school is EXPENSIVE, to the tune of six figures even for people who attend state schools. And the tuition that we pay isn't anywhere close to being enough to cover the actual cost of educating us...even private schools subsidize students. I read somewhere that it costs a total of about a million dollars to educate one student.

Yes, obtaining a medical education is EXTREMELY expensive. Even for us Canadians (with our considerably cheaper tuition) it still costs about the same to educate one student. Its just that we get a lot of that subsidized because there are no private medical schools in Canada. I once heard it costs $8,000,000 to train one neurosurgeon.

Should it cost $100+ for a person to read your med school application? I know I'm simplifying this alot, but it seems that the cost of applying to med schools is unreasonable. I know that they only want to talk to serious students, but I see these prices and think its out of hand.

You forget that there's a massive amount of overhead and unrelated logistics costs associated with running the whole thing.

Like everyone has said, if you're complaining about the MCAT fee...then you'll be in for a surprise when the application fees, tuition fees, and all the other random crap starts hitting you.

Don't know why you attacked Q and A-man, but they are both Super MODS on SDN. that's why they still hang out here.

Last year or the year before, Q and another poster Shrike decided to start the subforum that you see at the top. Both having been experienced MCAT teachers for several years at Kaplan and TPR respctively, decided SDN needed a proper help section for MCATers instead of the random posts for help in the general MCAT discussion. Hence, Q became a mod on SDN. Even though she is in med school now, she still helps out on the subforums and around SDN because she enjoys teaching those younger then her and aiding and helping others out. She also still teaches MCAT classes where she is currently attending medical school for the premeds in that region.

Arsenic started on here to act as a Liason between his med school and SDN for the dean of the medical school who wanted someone on here to help aid and answer questions for SDNers applying to his school. In that way he would be a direct link between them and the dean of admissions.

He later moved on up to being a MOD in the MCAT forum and then Clinical Rotations Forum. Now he is a Super MOD for SDN which he does as a volunteer thing.

Molly Malone and Evo Devo are also MODS in the Preallo boards but now currently in med school as an MS I and MS II respectively.

You'll find most of the administrative side of SDN are people who are in med or professional schools (pharm, optometry, dental, etc.) or they are residents.

The owner and admin of this site himself is a board certified DO in family medicine.

Hey all,

Med school is mad expensive. Being a MS4, the steps are extremely expensive... roughly $450 for step I and for Step II CK ~ $450 and Step II CS ~ $1000. I haven't hit Step III yet, but I think it's roughly ~ $700. Also, when we go on residency interview... we're talking about a couple more thousand dollars for that. Now, what is nice for some residency programs is that they will pay for your hotel accomodations and of course pay for dinner and lunch, etc... but those plane and train tickets can get expensive!

One thing you should all consider when entering med school is to realize that "used" things can be a really good thing on your wallet. I know people that always must buy used and might use the book, opthalmoscope, otoscope just a few times and then basically it goes unused since not everyone needs a personal set with opthalmoscope/otoscope.

Anyways, best of luck in all your futures and prepare to shell out unless your parents are paying your way or you go to Mayo or you are MD/pHD (these guys pay though with even more time and sweat).
