MCG Roll Call

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
maybe...trying to decide between MCG and Emory. Some days i'm sure i'm going to the former, other days i'm positive i'm going to the latter!

Pillowhead,

Sounds like how I was with deciding b/t UVa and MCG. I just couldn't justify paying that much more for UVa and being so far away from my family. I've been to visit MCG a couple of times now since my decision, and I know that I made the right one - - - It just feels right when I'm there! Everyone's so cool and I feel like I'll have every opportunity to excel. I can't wait to move there in May!

Anyone else going to MCG?

ermonty,

I emailed you from my AOL account. I'll be there next fall for sure.. Pillowhead, I wish you luck in your decision process.. I decided against applying to Emory, after talking to several people that declined Emory in previous years. Beware of "joints", also known as fry your carcass all day exam sessions.. (ie all exams on the same day) and Anatomy has a bad rap.. You have to decide wether it is worth it for you to go to a private school, which may net you severe debt.. But hey, it depends on who is paying the bills. I chose MCG because of the friendly atmoshphere, low cost, and good residency placement, but you'll have to make the decision that is best for your situation.

Rampant,

Absolutely - Couldn't have said it better myself! 😀
I got your email, I'll reply as soon as I get some time - I've got some good info. on the housing scene and some questions to ask ya.

Where are all my fellow SDNers that are going to MCG?

Lets keep this thread rolling

Hey guys, thanks for the input. I plan on visiting Augusta again before making my final decision. It's not so much the caliber of MCG I worry about (esp. since I plan on living and working in GA anyway)...it's personal problems. To make a long story short (see the relationship & medical school thread for the long version), my boyfriend of three years is probably going to do a PhD at GA Tech and so I really don't want to do the long distance thing (again in my case). Also, I am Jewish, and the Jewish community in Augustsa, while certainly existent, is not particularly large...just something I'm apprehensive about having grown up in Atlanta and going to conservative temple. But we'll see...gotta visit MCG again, maybe talk to some students, and wait for that ever important financial aid.

Pillowhead,

That's a tough situation. While finances is an important consideration for medical school, it is not the most important. Listen to logic, but follow your heart. Best wishes for whatever you decide. But either way, you get to play doctor - the greatest profession in the world!

I'll be starting MCG in the fall as well. I'm anxious to meet the people I'll be spending the next few years with!

Currently living in Marietta with plans to relocate to Augusta with my husband sometime during the summer. Can't wait to meet you guys.

VictoriaKB,

I PMed you. Well that's three of us so far! 🙂 Maybe a fourth if pillowhead comes on board.

Are there any other MCG SDNers lurking around here that haven't posted yet?

Great to hear some people are willing to sacrifice 4 yrs of a social life for a great education.

Anyways, I was thinking of applying to MCG for Med School. To those of you who have been accepted, what do you guys think got your foots in the door?

To the jewish poster: I am not Jewish myself, but the Jewish population in Augusta is very active and there is a rec center in Evans(a suburb of Augusta).

foot in door?

I'm a prospective applicant as well hook, but I don't think there is any special secret to get your foot in the door. 3.4+ GPA, 27+ mcat, decent EC's, and georgia residency should be enough for an interview. Looking at the numbers, they have 750 or so georgia residents applying and interview about half. Of those 300-400 they interview, they accept maybe 210-220 to fill their class. So I'm guessing getting foot in door just involves having solid numbers and a well-rounded app. Michael

Go down and visit the campus if you want to meet some very nice people. It is best to talk to the admissions staff so that you will know exactly what they are looking for. It's a more balanced approach to looking at the applicant, but if you are academically weak, you will have to overcome that with EC's or extenuating circumstances. I'd say you are pretty safe with a 3.5, 3.6 GPA and a 28-29+ mcat or so, though I have seen lower gpas with higher mcats, and slightly lower mcats with stellar gpas accepted.

I was wondering if anybody knew about MCG's residency match list. Is it purely regional or is there a national distribution? I know that graduates have matched at top programs at Emory and Duke but any outside the South? I really liked the school and the tuition, but I just don't want to live in the South after I'm done. Any thoughts?

I can't speak to to distribution of the residency match list, but I've talked to several current students and this year's Ortho and ENT (early match) applicants kicked butt!

Anybody newly accepted to or made the decision to go to MCG, the best damn school in the SE (I'm not biased, HONEST). 😀

all right guys, so you know I've had a little dilemma trying to decide between MCG and Emory. Well, MCG has already given me a pretty nice scholarship (somewhere between half and full tuition) and I just found out today that Emory isn't going to give me a damn penny (damn, stupid ARGH!). so the chances of my joining yall at MCG have certainly just shot up. Just thought I'd let you know. Anyone going to that Saturday thing on April 19th? My interview day there wasn't so hot, so I'm looking forward to seeing the school again. I need to get a better feel for it.

I'll be joining MCG in August as well. Actually, I have been working at MCG for 5 years in Cell Signaling research (started when I was a sophomore in college). So, I can tell you guys a lot about the school; the students here are great, and they seem to genuinely want to help each other. If there is anything else I can tell you guys, I'll be more than happy to hook a brother up! Can't wait to meet everyone in the fall.🙂

So far its looking like: Rampant, PLD, VictoriaKB, ermonty, and HOPEFULLY pillowhead (gotta have all the SDN representation we can get!).

I'm going to the April 19th "prospective student seminar." That's a bit misleading don't ya think; it sounds like it's intended for future applicants. I called and found out that it is essentially a second look weekend to help those holding multiple acceptances decide. Although I've already decided on MCG, I'm still gonna go to meet the president/dean and my future classmates. Maybe I'll bump into someone looking for a place to stay, cause I'm gonna need a roommate!🙂

When did all of you hear back from MCG? I applied early decision (deferred) and am still waiting. I think i'm competitive with a 3.4 and 31, but who knows. I guess they've about got their class full at this point, but I dont know many people personally who've heard back.
oh, and just to humor myself, did the letter come regular mail and do you know how long it took to get to you?
cheers!

Jimbo21,

I applied regular decision, interviewed the 2nd week of November, and got my acceptance the first week of January. The letter came as certified mail (I live in an apt, so they sigined for it and stuck in my box). The letter is thick enough to contain ~ 8 folded pieces of paper - not a hugh packet like I expected.

Good luck, and I hope that you get the acceptance(s) that you seek. 🙂

I might take a look at that prospective student seminar if its not to late, I'm not sure.. I still really need to go down there and check out the housing scene. Do you know by what date you need to RSVP? Anyhow, I got my acceptance October 2nd, but that was via the early decision route.. I hope to meet alot of SDNers down at MCG in the future,

Rampant

rampant, the RSVP deadline is April 10, so you have a lot of time. And the housing scene is great here in Augusta; what I mean is, apartments are cheap, and I would not stay in the MCG dorms. I have several nursing and grad school friends who stay in the dorms, and all of them are ready to move out when their time is up. I hope this helps.

I personally perused the housing scene this weekend.. Alot of good choices, perhaps too many choices in my book.. That's the problem. I didn't have any luck accessing many housing resources on Saturday either, so I was on my own. I'll probably have to make a trip or two more down the long stretch of I-20 before I finally decide.. Hope to see some people soon,

rampant

Rampant,

Sounds like you finally made it over to Augusta to check out the housing. Lots of good choices. I've decided where I'm gonna live. I've paid the deposit and I'll be moving in June 1st. It's all so very exciting!

So who's going to the April 19th seminar (besides me)? PLD? Rampant? VictoriaKB? Pillowhead?

I don't know about the rest of my fellow MCG SDNers out there, but I'm really getting ready to meet my future classmates and get started studying! 😀

What's the latest gang?😛

well, count me in for next year. what's the story with housing? does anyone know how to go about finding a house near the campus? I really dont want to live in an apartment another year if I can help it. If anyone has any leads, let me know.
peace

Congratulations and welcome to the club Jimbo! 😀

The only way I know of to find realty in Augusta is either through a realty co. or the internet at www.augustarealestate.com.

I looked at buying, but ultimately decided to rent. Good luck if you are sure you want to buy. But if you decide to rent, then let me know - I have a much more intimate knowledge of the Apt. scene in Augusta (as I have seen darn near every one twice)!

Take care and see you in August(a)!

Anyone heard anything from finaid yet?

Rampant,

I still haven't heard anything from FA yet. Starting to feel like I didn't dot all the i's and cross all the t's. 🙁

On a side note, I'm gonna be an Augustan come Sunday! 😉

I will be at MCG in the fall. I was accepted early decision in Oct. I have lived in Augusta since I was 2. Great city for studying, nothing else to do. Luckily Atlanta is only 2 hrs away.

Hey mgshah! I've lived in Augusta for 8 days now, nice town. I don't see why people keep saying "Disgusta? Ewww! You gotta get outta there!" See ya in a couple of months.

Ermonty

Any waitlist movement anyone? I was told by the admissions office that they have an "active waitlist". Of course that only has meaning to me if my name is moved off the waitlist and onto the acceptance list. Just waiting and hoping for any news.

Yeah, I'm on the WL, too. Let me know if you hear anything about the slowdown in "activity." Good luck!

I am looking forward to starting school this fall. I have been cooling my heels doing research in the MCG physiology dept. MCG is a great school and for the low price of tuition, you cannot get a better deal. Augusta can suck at times, but I do not need too many distractions. Is anyone originally from Augusta or familiar with the location? One month to go 'til SHOWTIME!!! I am glad you all made the RIGHT choice with MCG.

Good to see some school spirit around here! Everyone else ready to GET IT ON in one month?😎

Monty

I am so glad that I don't have to go thru first year again. My only word of advice to ya'll is to buy the Test CD. It has all of the old tests for each class (except ECM) for 5 or 6 years back. ECM totally sucks by the way.

hi everyone this is my first time to the forem, I was at the prospec student seminar in april I may have met some of the people on this thing there, if so hey, if not meet the rest in less than a month, I was accepted early admission, thus I must go, but honestly sort of burned out with school, grad from my undergrad on Aug 1st, and start the next week at MCG, have a rough summer just to graduate, oh well hope I catch some inspiration along the way

Radiohead,

Thanks for the heads up about the Test CD. What is so terrible about ECM? I heard it is mostly touchy-feely kinda stuff the first year. If that's the case, I can see how one might be frustrated studying for such a course when more hardcore science material from other courses is piling up. Also, the orientation packet I recieved had a letter from your class president, and said that your class has activities planned for the incoming MS1s (beyond the school sponsored ones). Do you know anything about what this might be? I know, I know - it's suppose to be a suprise, but hey - I always use to peak at my Christmas presents before Mom wrapped them also! 😛

Southcom,

I went to the prospective student seminar as well. I met a couple of people there from SDN and told a few others about this site. There wasn't much time to meet and greet with folks, as the day consisted mostly of why MCG is so great. Good info. though. It sounds like MCG is really doing great in the recruitment of clinical/research faculty. The health system must be shelling a out a pretty penny for those folks. I wonder where the money's coming from and if it has anything to do with the formation of MCG Helath Inc. and the improvement of the bottom line?

1. ECM
There are some useful parts to ECM i.e. patient interviewing, procedures, etc. There are some parts that are absoultely worthless i.e. small group tutorial. You will waste roughly 24 hours of your life (throughout the year) sitting in this small group talking about feelings and other stuff that has no worth on my or anyone's future practice as a physician. Another thing is the worth of the course. ECM is 11 hours, while Gross, Biochem, and Histo are all 7. The only other class that is 11 hrs 1st year is Physiology, and that class is the backbone of anything you do in medicine. You will do way less work in ECM for a grade that is extremely subjective and arbitrary, and they don't round up. You need exactly 90%. If you want to know more just pm me.

2. "Special Activities"
First of all, who wrote you the letter? Was it Kathryn (new pres. ) or Ben (old one)? I don't know if you know but we have Social VP's. Their job is to plan social activities. So, i think some that are planned so far are white water rafting (Aug 22-24) and various things the first week of school i.e. keg parties, dinners, bowling, etc. The first week of med school was a blast. Ya'll have about 3-4 weeks until hell begins

Radiohead,

It was Kathryn that wrote the letter in the orientation packet. White water rafting? Dinners/Parties/Bowling? Hellzyeah! Who needs classes - we don't need no education. 😀

ECM sounds very subjective. Learning procedures sounds like the cool part, but small group tutorial doesn't sound too bad either - I mean what's wrong with a bunch of medstudents sitting around talking about feelings while eating zuchinni bread and sipping on hot cocoa! 😉 JK!

Monty

Well, it sounds like you are going to love ECM. Small group can go either way. I had a bad group, where my other groupmates were kind of antagonistic toward eachother and we didn't gel. What I mean is that whenever someone said something in group, someone would shoot it down. It made it nearly impossible for me to say anything for fear of getting flamed. Sounds like SDN i guess. Also, the profs., who moderate your group, are a big factor. I had Dr. Peggy Wagner, who is the course director. You'll find out about Dr. Wagner when you get there.
peace

has everyone found housing yet? If not, I know someone who is looking for a roommate. He is a resident at MCG and was interested in finding someone within the medical field to share his 2 bedroom/2 bath house. Gender irrelevant. Let me know if interested.

ermonty, are you the only person in the mcg class from VSU, b/c I rem meeting some dude from vsu, I went there for two years loved it, much better time than at tech, oh well if it was you that I met hey again, anyway, the activities they have planned seem awsome, really can't wait, see ya'll in august, and talk on here till then

southcom,

On the 'accepted list' that came in the orientation packet there is one other person that graduated from VSU - J. Rentz. I didn't meet him at the seminar though. Seems like everyone I met was from UGA or GT.

koma,

I've been told that MS1s DO practice placement of NG tubes on each other. Practicing certain clinical skills on each other not only helps us learn how to do them, but also helps us learn how it feels to have it done to you, so that we may better empathize with our future patients.

chrisaina,

I'm all settled into my apt. (for now at least). I may take a look around next summer for a condo/TH to buy.

Radiohead,

Man, that sucks that you got stuck with a lame group like that. 🙁 Do groups change through out the year, or at least each semester? How about next year - will you have a different group for ECM II? I hope so.

Monty

Yes, we did have to put NG tubes down eachother. It sucked because my partner didn't understand the concept of advancing the tube concurrent with my swallowing. The result was my epiglottis being open, and the tube subsequently going into my trachea. I almost vomited, not to mention the fact that blood was coming out of my nose and mouth. It is not that bad
It sucks that the procedures are only worth 5% of your grade. Small group is worth 20%.
