I'll take the 9pm rule over the laws in MN any day. No liquor in grocery stores. And even though they're open til 10pm, no liquor on Sundays. 👎

I haven't done this since I lived in La Crosse, WI, but the bars can open at 6am. 😀

Also, they sell "near beer" in Minnesota...nothing worse than buying beer and inadvertently getting the "3.2 flu."

You haven't technically lived in Madison until you've stayed up drinking all night and gone to "Smut n' Eggs" at Bennett's at 6 am.

I've never had a problem with the 9:00 rule, but that's because we had kegerator in college, and I tend to stock obscene amounts of beer and liquor nowadays.

What about carry out. It's a nice little work around. You just need to find a bar that will sell you a case of beer, or whatever, and you're set. 👍
other than National Liquor, which used to be on 26th and National, who does that?

Many bars in my hometown sell carry-out. Haven't looked here.

Andy, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my brother that lives in Madison told me that Smut 'n Eggs is no more. I never got the chance. 🙁

The only way you can sell beer in a MN gas station is if it has a lower alcohol content.

what about the flu part? Does the lower proof allow bacteria to grow?

edit: and by the way, that rule sucks but Minneapolis seemed nice. Well, it was the first civilization I'd seen in about 1700 miles so maybe I was biased at the time.

Yeah, I really liked Minneapolis when I was there. Felt like the Midwest's version of a Californian city (read: ultra-liberal politics and great art scene). Wish I could convince my wife to move back out there for residency, but she must have an allergic reaction to the Cities or something.

Today is truly a sad day....where else will we be able to get our fix of creepy old men and the feeling of shame that comes with feeling too dirty to actually watch the porn on the bigscreen 10 feet away? Actually, the best part about Smut n' Eggs was the $1.75 bloodies and screwdrivers.

I don't think it's anything to do with that, just that you have to drink a LOT of it to get drunk, which in turn makes you feel like crap. It really sucks when you, as an out-of-stater, buy 3.2% beer unknowingly and can't figure out why it's taking you forever to get a buzz going.

I just heard about some brand of beer last night....I think it was one of Lakefront Brewery's beers...with 13% alcohol! That'll get you going in a pretty big hurry.

I liked Minneapolis too. It looked like a nicer version of Milwaukee. 😛

I like Minneapolis. I would just like it more if it were in Maryland or Delaware.

"Look at us...we're in Delaware. 🙁 "

So I'm over the Midwest. Sue me! 😛

You'll be hearing from my lawyers. Maybe you know them--they're the rock group BOSTON!

Yes, but Delaware wins for its proximity to Maryland.

I thought it, you said it. Thanks for the assist. 😀
It just looked cleaner. Maybe I just didn't see their shady parts of town, but there are some factors that are just out of Milwaukee's control. Central Milwaukee will probably not be reformed within our lifetimes. There's just too much wrong in this city.

It can still hang its hat on the fact that it beats Cleveland! (Not to mention Detroit, which by a Michigan senator's own admission is a lot like an Iraqi warzone)

Funk speaks the truth. That place terrifies me.

I can see you browsting SDN over in the corner there.

view this, it will make you happy:

I'm pretty certain I would know for sure that this guy is a ***** if he were speaking English. As of right now, I can only call it a hunch. (Look, I didn't break your "quote the video" rule.)

Are you saying that you don't like living Milwaukee?

No, I do like it, especially since my family is here, but our inner city (which you can avoid fairly easily) is hopelessly segregated, impoverished and crime-ridden. Last night, as I drove through the middle of it, a neighborhood that is 98% black in places, I went past at least four different cars that were pulled over by the police within 8 blocks. That's completely typical for that area (I know it well - I ran 911 calls in the inner city for close to two years). I think I once counted 13 cop cars in just over one mile.

That's the bad news. The good news is that almost all our suburbs are all very nice (some of them amazingly so), the downtown is flourishing, the east side is a cool place to be, the traffic is pretty minimal for a city of this size, and everything is cheaper than either of the coasts.

I'm really glad you like the area. I went through the City of Milwaukee website last night and realized that Milwaukee is a pretty cool city with so many other universities/colleges around. I'm really excited to come and I look forward to exploring the city.

Another good thing about milwaukee is that when headed downton the freeway exits are in different places every day!

i heard about that construction stuff. sounds crazy. does that effect a lot of people at MCW?

only 2 finals left tomorrow and wednesday--- molecular biology and neuroscience!! then i'm done and that is really awesome! i've been busy so i hardly can show up here lately!!!!!!!!! whew! glad i know the stuff like the back of my hands, and I really like some of the stuff in neuro. pattern generation stuff is cool! nerd, lol! do you guys use kandel's book in neuro at mcw? its huge but awesome!

kay, i just needed a break, now its to bed for this girl! :luck:

Yeah, that totally keeps you on your toes. I got lost going to church once this year because I ended up missing the exit, turning around, going downtown (that = me really lost). Same church I've been going to since 1st year.

Prior to my taking neuro at MCW last year Kandel was the "required" text (which means some people used it, while many more didn't). The year we took it they switched to some ridiculously worthless and under-detailed text, and the last I heard they were supposedly switching back to recommending Kandel at the behest of students.

Hard to say what will be the case next year--rumors abound that you'll be getting a new (and relatively awesome) course director in neuro.

No, construction is mostly downtown, and if you've got a built-in compass like yours truly, navigation isn't a problem. The traffic here is minor leagues compared to Chicago, let alone New York.

I opened Kandel once. WAAAY too much information. Almost all of our lecturers include all of their info right in their handouts, with a few notable exceptions in block 1. Plus, unlike phys, which follows Guyton very closely, neuro wanders all over the place, so you're bouncing all over.

Okay everyone, I've mostly been on the Penn State threads, but after much deliberation, I decided to withdraw and attend MCW...so yes, hello to all future classmates! 🙂

Hey fellow MCWers! I will be joining you in the fall. I just have a few questions.

What is the testing format (multiple choice, short answer, essay…) and are they ever timed?

Second how nice is the gym, does it cost money, and are there showers at the school?

Thanks

Testing is almost entirely multiple choice tests. The only exceptions I can recall are anatomy practicals where you name structures (although they give you a masterlist of all the structures that are potential answers) and pharmacology, which is in essay/short answer format. Some of the multiple choice exams are on paper and some utilize the computer lab in an effort to get you ready for taking the first board exam on computer. Pretty sure all of the exams are timed, but very few people have issues with running out of time.

The "gym" isn't all that big. There are about 3 treadmills, some ellipticals and stationary bikes, and a decent amount of weight equipment crammed into two rooms. Generally you don't have to wait for equipment at all and the weight setup was sufficient for me to get my full workout in, including deadlifts and squats. There are lockerrooms across the hall from the gym and they have several showers there for you to clean up, as well as lockers for you to put your stuff in--you just have to bring a padlock.

If you want more of a gym, the Wisconsin Athletic Club is pretty posh, and it's right across the street. It's $75/month for two, which is what i have, and $49/month for a single (if you're under 26). If you're cheap, but still want a nice gym, the Wisconsin Lutheran College several blocks away provides access to their gym for like $50/semester. Or if you live by Splat and akpete, there's a YMCA.

I have ZERO capacity to study right now. I want to, but my brain is fully saturated at the moment.

Master List. Sheesh.

I still say you guys have it too easy these days.
😛

Lemme guess, back in your day, they didn't even have the cadaver humidors, and you had to keep the cadavers in your locker, amirite?

Back in my day, we stole them from the cemetery or bought them from the undertaker.

Or used other students... the slow ones.

Did you notice that, looking at the Benchmark schedule? I know some people are on vacation and all, but there's only like 175 people on the list or something.

Speaking of, when's your B-OSCE?

So that email was legit, even though he tried to recall it multiple times?

Mines on the 17th in the morning. It's especially sweet, 'cause I have my neuro and psych exams that week too. It's almost like I'm back in the pre-clinical years, but not as sucky (suckie?).

Yeah! I think you made the right decision. 😀 We are cool.

It didn't post the first time so sorry if this is a double post. I have a chronic Illness. Can someone tell me about MCW's health policy? PPO? Blue Cross??

I believe you can choose either the PPO or HMO from Humana. I haven't heard any major complaints about it, other than the cost (which is rolled into your student loans). They just started carrying a vision plan, too.

So I went ahead and made a facebook group for MCW Class of 2011, so to all my future classmates, JOIN! (Yes, I do realize that almost everyone here is NOT a 2011er...) 🙂

well, finals aren't over yet....😱

So I just sent a letter to our MIM course director complaining about my small group leader and included my correspondence with the small group leader. My leader honestly wrote (paraphrased) "I wasn't paying attention to who was participating, because I was so focused on the accuracy of what you guys were saying." 🙄

Haha, I know. We're all alone. It's sad seeing a facebook group with only 2 members. 😛

Oh my god--there are 4 members now. It's coming alive!

I too have a chronic disease. I dont have the schools health plan but i asked em about it since i will have to get it next year when im off my parents plan. The plan should cover preexisting conditions and any meds. There is a HMO and PPO plan. I think the deductible and copay is variable depending on the plan you pick. The school is actaully willing to work with you if for some reason the school plans dont cover you
