I send mine awhile ago. Has anyone recieved anything from fin. aid lately?

They sent me the offer. You can only borrow 18,000 right now and have to meet with a debt advisor during orientation in order to borrow the rest.

Were we supposed to send an official transcripts in to the office of admissions? I can't rememeber if I did that or not.

I think you're supposed to send them as soon as spring semester is over, but I am GUESSING (not being at home with my stuff) that the deadline is the very very beginning of August. I'm a little worried about the transcript for my Tulane night class from (mumble, mumble) years ago arriving. I had to mail the request because their fax machine didn't want to accept a fax from me, and New Orleans mail is notoriously slow right now.

You can call them if you're not sure if they've received them or not. They don't have to know you're not sure if you've sent them. 😉

Yup, got mine, too, sent the signed acceptance back (note the fast deadline), and kissed 70% of my savings goodbye. But hey, that's WHY I saved money--so I could borrow less. Right?

I didn't realize last year that they wanted transcripts from ALL schools - I thought they just wanted a final transcript to show your coursework since AMCAS - so I had 3 missing. The deadline for having them in was by the first day of 2nd semester. You have plenty of time to get that in, but I would do it sooner than later so you don't get harrassing emails like I did. If they're not in by Jan, you get kicked out of school. 😱

Oh, if anyone's worried about not getting a disbursement on the first day because of the 18,500 thing with financial aid - I know I was - you will get money if you ask for it. They have it all credited to your tuition, but during orientation you can just ask Jean Sunby for some money, and then the rest of your tuition bill will be paid later after your meeting with fin. aid. There's a time set aside for it during orientation.

Right. They set aside times to schedule the appointments and such during orientation. I had my appointment during orientation week. I think some people had to wait til after.

Basically, you go in, say "I need this much." I also said, "yeah, this student contribution...yeah, we need to make that 0. Thanks." They change the numbers, print out a new sheet, and you sign it. That's it. Very quick. You'll get another check then like a week later or something.

They're really big on trying to get you to borrow as little as possible and will get on their soapbox about that during orientation. Which blows my mind since the full budget doesn't quite cut it for me. They like to use the "borrow from your parents" excuse, which not all of us can do obviously.

If you zero-out the student/parental contribution, that amount is added to the unsubsidized loan. I think it's crazy how they come up with those numbers. How are you supposed to save over $3000 for school with a past year's income of $15,000? That's just enough to live off of!!

And Ashleigh, the health insurance is added on at your fin. aid appointment. I think they just confirm that you have it every year before lending it or something. But don't worry about it.

lucky. Though, I've had a cold for a while, and Sunday and Monday, I've had slept like 16-18 hours a day each day, and yesterday I scrubbed in surgery and got to see hip replacements. That was sweet. Now I'm in the library, working hard, on a literature search. =)

Thanks, April, I've been trying to find the stuff about that. All I knew is that the tuition went up, I got the same amount of money, and health insurance wasn't included.

Nice to hear you r part of the 2010ers. It'll take about 15-20min to get to school from there. I live in Greenfield and it takes me 20-25min to get to school during traffic hrs.

Hi and welcome! I live in Normandy and I have a small dog; however, 1br start at $730 + $20 pet rent, so if you're looking for 2br, it might be out of your price range (check apartments.com). The Reserve also takes dogs, but they start at ~$875 for 1br. I've found that most of the large apartment complexes take small dogs, but there aren't many right next to school. The rest of the places are privately owned and you just have to call to find out. Unfortunately the large complexes tend to be newer, renovated, or just plain bigger and nicer, so they cost more. I'm trying to save money so I'm branching my apartment search out to West Allis and North of North Ave. I don't know if this helps any, but good luck!!

I just got a reply from a landlord in Wauwatosa. The apartment is just south of the Lawrence Timmerman airport (just south of Hampton on 92nd) Anyone know commute time to the school from that area?

Sorry for asking all these mundane questions, but my wife just had a baby and I haven't been able to scrape together enough to come out and check things out on my own.

Don't worry. In my letter, they included a generous amount for Bombay Sapphire after I complained about the paltry amount originally awarded for Fleishman's. 😉

Just got the second mailing from Admissions. It says all transcripts must be in by Aug 1 and they won't let you register if transcripts are missing. I've just written to them, because two of my transcripts are coming from New Orleans schools, and I don't know how fast they'll get there. Mail from NO is totally fubared.

I live at Normandy also, and I've never had noise problems, for the most part. My only problems are the guy downstairs, who's hearing impaired...so he shouts a lot...and when he sneezes it sounds like a bomb is going off.

I also live right over the pool (best balcony in the complex, $740 a month) so I get "little kid screaming" noise alot during the warm months. But I never study at home and am barely around in the summer anyway. Ultimately the noise just depends on your neighbors.

Don't worry about the questions, no problem. And congrats! I think a commute from the Hampton area would maybe take 20-25 minutes I guess. And I'm totally guessing. I know what area you're talking about but never done the drive from there to school. It really depends on traffic. From Normandy, during non-traffic it's only like 5-10 minutes, but with traffic it can be more like 15. Just depends on the time of day and if you're lucky with the stoplights.

My building at Normandy is quiet. The pet area is on the far South side of the complex. My balcony faces the YMCA, but there's a bunch of trees right there and people usually aren't too noisy in the parking lot. Not the best view in the place, but probably one of the most private. I'm sure the noise varies considering there are a lot of individual buildings. I live on the upper floor, and the floor creaks, so I know that makes noise for the guy below me, but you'll get that anywhere. Anyway, I do most of my studying at home (or at least my pretend studying while actually sleeping in and playing with my dog), and I've never had any kind of issue with noise.

I figured I'd just go to Goodwill on $2 Sunday and get some scrufty old clothes for anatomy class. I'm also planning to wear a showercap so there's some faint prayer my hair won't stink all the rest of the day. I know, you all want to be in the same group with the sexy shower cap lady now.

Whoa, shower cap. That's new. Can't say I saw that this year. Awesome.

I highly recommend scrubs, but where you get them from doesn't matter. Everyone who buys them off the sale will match. How cute. I got scrub pants from Wal-mart and wore the MCW t-shirt they gave us at the interview.

I didn't buy the MCW scrubs; I had about 8 pairs of scrubs from work the previous year. I worked as a phlebotomist in a hospital, so I wore a different pair every day, and washed them after they were worn once (in general. Though, I think by block 4 I stopped caring, and I rewore scrubs 3 or 4 times). My scrubs still don't stink, and I wore them again in the phys dog lab, and I wear them as pajamas. I figure since I kept washing them throughout the semester it's all good. I kept the dirty scrubs in my locker in a plastic bag, so my locker never started to stink either. =)

As for the shower cap, everyone else's hair is going to stink, so it really doesn't matter, and you'll get used to the smell.

One of my lab partners wore really old jeans and a t-shirt, and I think he changed his shirt after every block exam.

Well, there's a point. Of course, if the stink from my hair pervades my bicycle helmet, after I ride home like that, that would, um, well, gee, I guess it would really stink. But then I won't get to wear a sexay plastic shower cap, perhaps with fasionably enticing polka dots. Oh, the disappointment.

I just came back from a conference of nontrad pre-med and med students and a couple of the residents were reminiscining about how you notice the way the M1s smell when you're an M2. It just made me think.

I do think I will go with the cheap option for clothing and get any old cotton junk from the thrift store and wash it.

I got scrub pants from Wal-mart and wore the MCW t-shirt they gave us at the interview.

What a great use for that ugly shirt. I used scrubs from the school that waitlisted me and then sent me a letter saying that they were done with the waitlist and that I was next on the list (I had the scrubs from volunteering in undergrad). It was somehow therapeutic/symbolic when I'd wipe my cadaver juice-soaked hands all over the logo on the scrubs...

I actually shelled out money for those embroidered MCW Anatomy Lab scrubs, but I never used them in lab. I find they make nice pajamas when you're visiting relatives or friends for the night.

Speaking of pajamas...I had a messed up dream last night. For some reason I had to go back to high school for a period of time before I could go back to med school, and it was just freaking weird. For some reason I woke up with a renewed excitement about med school. Okay, maybe not excitement, but I feel BETTER about it. Better than high school english anyway...

Of course I ALSO had a dream last night that I was at work but at the same time had to shoot up alien bugs left and right like a video game. That renewed my excitement over playing XBox this summer.

I'm not THAT thrilled with the permanent collection in the art museum. I'm not really an art expert; there's just not much there that really moves me and that's all that matters to me in art. The Masters of American Comics exhibition (which will still be running then) has kind of historical comic strip artists --people who were controversial or innovative in their day, mostly. If you're into architecture, the new Calatrava addition onto the museum is stunning to look at, and of course it's a great chance to walk along the lakefront.

The zoo's a zoo. I've only been once, but it's a nice zoo, so I may do that.

You guys can also just not do the zoo or the art museum and have the afternoon off. I went to the zoo, and it rained. I wish I had just taken the afternoon off because they kept us so busy that week, and I had so many things I needed to get done around my apartment. Just a thought. =)

I'm leaning toward skipping the expedition. I've been to both and there's not much new at either one since I've been last. Although, maybe it's supposed to be a bonding thing and I should just suck it up and go to one of them. If I had to choose between them, I would go to the art museum. It's a pretty cool building, plus it has a piece of "art" that I think everyone should see: a darkened room with only a bed in it accompanied by the sound of a beating heart...it still haunts my nightmares.

Sa sau le matai i le fale! I must admit, I love samoan...to each her/his own. I went to my undergrad at B.Y.U.-Hawaii, it's on the north shore of Oahu. I have a lot of good friends that went back to thier respective islands...I wonder if I'll ever see them again...probably not in milwaukee: I had a friend, Haunga Kioa, from Tonga; 6' 3" and 235 lbs. of solid muscle. If the thermometer dropped below 75, he layered clothing before coming to school!
