Well, for one thing, I was waitlisted at UW but accepted at MCW. But, if had I been accepted at UW I still would have chosen MCW. I feel that the clinical environment is better in the Milwaukee area. And, the class is much more diverse at MCW. UW has mostly in-state students with the majority (seems like at least 90%) of the in-state coming from UW undergrad. It will be nice to meet new people.

Madison is an awesome city though, and I know that I'll miss the great road biking in its immediate vicinity.

I've been living in Milwaukee for 10 years and I wanted to keep my social support network. Also, and this is odd, when I would mention MCW to physicians, residents and med students (including members of the OldPreMeds scattered across the country), they would almost invariably smile and say, "Oh, that's a NICE place!" It just seems that they go out of their way to admit nice people, and try to make sure their students succeed.

I like Milwaukee. It's a nice city to live in, and I like the people I've met here. I figure my hours away from med school will be few and precious and I want to enjoy them.
 
For the sake of all that is holy, don't change your service once you start it. If you move (and keep the same number) or change the name of the account, or sneeze, they have to disconnect your DSL and reconnect it. And for reasons that NO ONE can explain to me, though they can (and do) disconnect your DSL instantly, it takes a couple of weeks for the disconnect order to "process". And only then can the place the reconnect order. In the meantime you can have dial-up.

If you have a modem.

On the other hand, they're cutting my rate to $12.99/month. Doesn't suck TOO bad to be me.

I only say that because, despite the fact that I enjoy exchanging quips with you, I am at the end of a 7 day work week and have realized that my powers of wit have dissolved in the monotony of my job. Every time Brett Favre has a bowel movement, every newspaper in the state will make it front page news for several days in a row. Instead of toll-ways, to gain access to the state, you must recite the number of championships the Packers have won and the years in which they won them.

I have the best easing into third year schedule ever... radiology, CPR, family as the first three. But I have surgery in May and June... yeah, I know.

How's the life of resident treating you? (I now can't remember if you're ER or Med/Peds, and am to lazy to look it up on my very wonderful day off).

In the winter, get the biggest doormats you can find, inside and outside your doors (unless you're in an apartment with long, long interior hallways, which become your de facto doormats). Otherwise you will track in mud, salt, snow, and things that got hidden under the snow, and your floors will look awful and you'll think you should be cleaning them, but you won't, because you'll be studying and shoveling snow.

Wear a hat. And gloves. And a scarf. And put all your winter gear on and BUTTON IT before you go outside if it's really cold. You'll be much more comfortable if you obey this simple rule.

15 degrees in Wisconsin is a lot less cold than 40 degrees in Louisiana ever was, because at least it's dry.

Most Wisconsans are not familiar with the term "spicy" and sometimes think it means pepper was in the room with the food.

It is okay to make fun of the Brewers, and almost expected to make fun of the Bucks. It is not okay to make fun of the Packers. Not even if they all put on funny hats and run out onto the field naked. Just don't do it.

On the whole, I love it up here.

U-turns are legal, but not at "regulated intersections" (also known as stoplights). But otherwise, feel free to pull a U-ie.

Water fountains are bubblers. ATMs are Tyme Machines.

yeah, i definitely advocate the big 3 first philosophy--it made the end of third year seem trivial. i also advocate front-loading the 4th year--it made the end of the year seem like vacation. oh, wait, it was vacation...

resident life is great, but my program (EM at indiana) has an orientation month. we do 10 shifts in the department and have a LOT of lectures and labs (airway, procedure, codes, etc). i've worked two shifts as a "real doctor" so far. it's been pretty chill, but it was weird seeing a pt for the first time since november (see vacation comment above). the down side is that i just got home from work and i have to be at lecture at 7am tomorrow (6 hours from now). maybe i should go to bed. yep, that's what i'm gonna do.

oh, and make fun of the packers all you want--i know i did.

I forgot to mention most Wisconsinites can't hear a difference (I promise, I swear!) You may be a subject of my research project during orientation. We out-o-staters start asking groups of people to say "bag" and "flag" for entertainment because it starts ludicrous discussions.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, and I can't STAND the "beg" and "fleg" pronunciations. I notice it and hate t. hate it hate it hate it!!!

Ashers, you lived in Hawaii, right? You definitely just pulled a Hawaii "slang" with the ",yeah?" comment 🙂 Haha! I lived in Hilo for a few years and I definitely found myself ending every sentence with ",yeah?"

I moved to Hawaii 13 years ago yesterday (4 July), but I've spent a significant amount of time away at college and med school... all a part of trying to escape. The stuff I really like about Hawaii is saying I'm from Maui, the food, and the fact that it's not cold.

Why'd you live over in Hilo?

Yes, the weather definitely was a plus for me, too...especially since I'm from freezing cold Colorado! I went to school a semester at UHH because I really needed to get away from the mainland for awhile...loved it, so went back after I got my degree to finish my pre-med classes at UHH. It was just nice to be so far away from everything for awhile! I've definitely lost most of the slang I had picked up on when I came back though 🙂

In Wisconsin, mostly up north, everyone ends sentences with "hey" as in, "Let's all go to the Packer game and drink beer now, hey."

Oh yeah, and the state name is Wis-GON-sin. That is how it is pronounced. Learn to say it right and many people will love you.

Man I can't handle this conversation. It's one of my biggest pet peeves when people start talking about everyone's accents and laughing at other people for really no reason at all. I usually get mad and walk away. Everyone speaks a little differently.

I'm from WI right next to Minneapolis, and most of what you guys have mentioned, I have never heard before. Bubbler is a Southeastern WI thing (no where else), rarely hear someone say beg instead of bag (actually I've gotten teased for overpronouncing the "a"). Never heard anyone end a sentence with "hey," unless I was in Canada, and then it's "ay."

Sometimes I might hear a difference b/t the people from the South and here, but not the people from CA. I feel like I have to be looking for a difference to really notice it. To me, unless you've got a strong Southern or Boston accent or something, everyone sounds just like everyone on TV and it all blends together.

Although I will admit that people will throw in a "ya know" every now and then. 🙂

Ahh it's all in fun anyway. I like hearing people's accents - it's fun to hear people talk in a different way because they're from a different place. I used to always have tourists come into the restaurant where I worked and commented on my "accent", but it was my Colorado LACK OF AN ACCENT they were hearing. 🙂
 
I asked this before, but maybe no one noticed 🙁 Is there somewhere where I can find what our schedule is going to look like this fall (M1) or can someone at least give me a ballpark idea of what the first year looks like? Classes/times of day/etc.??
 
Does anybody know a site that will list how many years the residency program is for the different areas of residency? I tried searching for it, but it just gives me specific schools and links to their programs. I want an overall site that will list everything for me 🙂

If you go on the MCW website and look up the academic calendars, the 05-06 calendars are up. For reasons unknown, they never post the upcoming year until right beforehand. But the schedule usually stays pretty much the same.

As for residency length, well surgery ~ 5, internal med, fam. practice, peds ~ 3, um...ob is like 4ish I think, EM ~3??

oh, and sorry about my rant about the accent thing. I know it's all in good fun here. 🙂 It just bugs me when I see people making fun of others as if their own accent (or lack thereof) is superior. And I do see this at school every now and then.

Well, CHA = clinical human anatomy. Biochemistry. CC = Clinical continuum, which means diversity stuff, medical interviewing, PBLs, and MIM - Medical Information Managment. DEVO = Human Development. CC PSYCH = a simple little intro to psych kind of thing. PHYS = Physiology. CTB = Cell and Tissue Biology. Neuroscience. I think that's it.

I think the meanest thing they do is have exams right after Labor day for M1s. It's a long weekend all right...of studying.

Thank you! And I'm assuming the weird names are the professors who are teaching the lectures and the last word is the building?

That is mean...maybe they changed that for this year?!?!?! 🙂

Yup. AUD = Kerrigan Auditorium. A/C = Alumni Center (basically just a really big room with chalkboards and an overhead). You will be spending the next year of your life in these areas.

Kerrigan is the desirable spot. The M2s are stuck in the HRC with a lot less desk space and chairs that don't move. =(

I know for sure you can bring beverages in (covered ones at least). That's why we never have lunches there. And when events do go on in the HRC, the lunch has to be served in the A/C. In the Fall, we hosted AMSA's regional conference, the bagels and whatnot had to be served in the lobby. I don't think people were supposed to bring them inside, but I'm sure some did. We got yelled at more for people setting food on the counter by the computers in the front. Apparently they're really possessive over that and NOTHING should ever be on that counter except for the ever constant vase of flowers. 😱
