MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought I would share the information that I received on the white coat ceremony. It turns out that the location for this years ceremony is different from previous years and so we are limited to the two guests. They are going to hand out two tickets to eveyone during orientation. If someone doesn't have two guests then you can try and get tickets from them. Otherwise, two guests it is.

Thanks for the info. I'll revise my answer in the future. Where are they holding the ceremony now?

I appreciated the answer. It got me thinking because you mentioned walking to the ceremony but I thought I saw that it was in Brookfield.

Maybe the new location will have an a/c.

One of the bigger wastes of time in med school.

Oh, I got all misty about it-maybe because my parents wanted to come and couldn't, and because it took me so long to get here. I asked people from my dance group to come instead.

I think it still ranks lower on the list than Ethics discussion, transition to clerkship, intersession, health policy, and a series of lectures that just might rhyme with "babo."

I went through about 4 boxes of gloves (I double gloved). I also bought mine at Sam's Club.

However, when I ran out, one of my lab partner's moms provided us with nitrile gloves.

Holy cow! I think I mighta used one box of gloves. Walgreen's brand.

I didn't mind the white coat ceremony. It was a way to get people to come visit me and go out to eat. My mom and my grandmas came down. Otherwise family doesn't come visit much. Although sporting events has been working last couple years.

Wow it took a long time to work through that entire thread. Now I feel qualified to post.

Pretty positive I'll be attending, so hello future classmates!! Is anyone looking for a roommate?

you read all 1300 posts? you really deserved that med school seat  join the gang.

Yeah, I have a lot of free time at work. It comes in short spurts, though, so it took me quite awhile!

Welcome to the thread future classmate! If you're looking for a roommate and happen to be on facebook, other people have created a group for the MCW 12'ers. In that group is a message board on which people used the roommate template supplied by school. Good luck!

If rent and utilities were not an issue would you upperclassman recommend living with a roomate for M1? Note - I would be finding a roomate through the roomate questionaire thingy

I liked living by myself. I could hang out with friends and stuff at school and after, then go home and have alone time. I also had a friend who would come over to mine a lot, so it'd be like a semi-rooommate, except she'd go back to hers to go to sleep. We lived in the same apartment complex. I still like have my own place.

ditto. living with another student would have driven me nuts. Not that I don't like my classmates...they're not too shabby. But having to always have some additional reminder of med school at home with me beyond the studying would have driven me nuts.

I lived with two other M1's and I was miserable! I felt like I could never just be alone and relax without them studying all the time. After this horrible year, I'm joining Ashers at the same apartment complex. It is more expensive but if you can afford it I would. I can't wait to pick up my new keys this month.

It was fine for me. My roommate studies at school and now, I often do as well. So I have the apartment to myself from time to time, and she only comes home to shower and sleep. But she's moving out in June so now I'm going through the process of looking for a new one.

If I were an M1, I'd totally take a look at rooming with you. I think it would be ideal to have a 3rd year be your roommate, because you know they're going to be out of the house on a regular basis, and you'll have the place all to yourself on nights when the 3rd year is on call. Plus, you'll have an experienced student available to guide you through 1st and 2nd year and give you all their tips and tricks for each class.

samenewme, I am going to be an M1 and need to find a place to live. If it is still open and if you are interested let me know.

Oh, except probably my favorite lame TV show theme was...

Ya take the good
Ya take the bad
Ya take em both and thare ya have
The Facts of Life, the Facts of Life!

If you don't know this song count yourself lucky.

I don't know the song... am I showing my age or lack thereof again?

On the date of graduation, I will be 25 years, nine months, and nineteen days. So there!

(The youngest person in our class was born in Sep 84. So I'm not *that* young).

holy crap.

if i would've done things the right way i'd be finishing intern year, rather than trying to pick out a new lender and lamenting over 6.8% interest rate and some crappy stuff apparently going on with residency relocation loans by our government (saw Linda P today).

Ditto.

The 1984 person will be matching with our class... she's going on a mission trip to India I think.

Africa. We have two 1984 students, and three 1983s that I can think of off the top of my head. At least two people after me in 1982, and two others three days or less older than I. So... yeah.

Hey,

I read somewhere on this thread about housing investments. Any med students here/people familiar with greater Milwaukee area have some knowledge on housing investments (any would be more than me, which is zero knowledge)? My parents and I are looking to invest in a place.

Specifically, I'm wondering if you guys know much about what location, type of housing and investment cost and potential.

Thanks!

Can you clarify what you mean by housing investment? Like, are you talking about buying a house to live in while in med school?

They're building a condo building on 68th across from that pizza joint that is always packed. I think a condo would be better for a 4 year stint in Milwaukee than purchasing a house. You'll have someone to call when your heater fan stops working. Also, when 1.3 feet of snow dumps while you are sleeping you don't have to shovel it.

Have your parents check out the property tax though....I'm sure they already thought of that. I know a couple people who were paying super low rent to their parents who owned the place that now are moving because their parents are losing too much money due to the property tax.

My advice: rent an apartment with free heat and have your parents buy you a sweet espresso machine instead. You'll save hundreds of dollars.

I think I've found my apartment for my M1 year - $735 per month, 1 bed, 1 bath, one block from the college, heat included, ground parking. Very clean and cozy. My only hesitation is that I know I'll be in the area only during the school year = ~10 months. This is a year lease. Is it common to find a 10 month lease? Or should I take this apartment?

Btw - this forum is AWESOME... i get updates everyday, and most of my questions answered before even personally asking them! Thank you all for your time and input! 🙂

I doubt you'll find any places with 10 month leases. Most landlords rent on a yearly basis. Heat included is a great deal -- if you can afford the $735/mo I would go for it. Are you going back home for the summer? I was surprised by how few med students actually left Milwaukee when school was out - many stayed around to do research projects in between 1st and 2nd year.

Not common to find a 10 month lease unless you have a really nice landlord who'll do it, but a lot of people will stay for the summer months. I'm getting a 10 month lease this year only because I've lived in the apt complex for 4 years and I'm leaving after graduation.

It must be annoying to get all those updates for the thread. Do you just get updates on 2012, or all the years?

Gimlet beat me to the major points because I just found out I"m getting a pt in status epilepticus with NHL.

I didn't feel like going through 28 pages of posts, so sorry if this was already asked. What is the financial aid package like for MCW? Do most students get some sort of grant/scholarship to help them out or is it basically all loans? I really wish they'd send out finaid info so we would have some sort of idea on how big of a hole we're getting into instead of just dropping us into one on orientation.

Unless you are a WI resident you are likely to get only loans. Also, for apartment leases, you only have one summer and that's M1 year. And it does seem like most people stay here. It's up to you, but is rather hard to get a 10 month lease.

Both the places I have lived made me sign 1 year contracts and then I didn't have to renew after that, I could just leave whenever I wanted.

Alright, this is pretty random, but that's what SDN is for, right?

My beloved old mountain bike died yesterday. I've been spending a lot of time on it lately, so I want to replace it right away, but I'm realizing that I have no idea what to replace it with.

Anyone know anything about bikes and have any thoughts on what I would get the most use out of over there?

I'm relatively broke, so I'm thinking about getting something used, but that scares me even more since I have no idea what I'm getting.

Thoughts?

So yea, I need a roommate/s preferably male. If you have found a place and need a roommate let me know.

Where do you live right now? In the Milwaukee area you can check out Wheel and Sprocket. You might run into a future pharm professor's son. Just don't tell him you're a medical student.

I have a Trek which I like quite a bit. I don't know where it stacks up compared to other brands in terms of pricing. But they're made in Wisconsin, and happy bikes come from Wisconsin.

Good times.

I got my road bike on sale at Johnson's on North. The people there are all really friendly, and apparently one of the guy's who works there daughter is an M4 for a few more days. He likes to talk about med school and compare schedules since I started psych in July at the place his daughter finished in June.
