MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was just asking because my dad wanted to give me one and I wasn't sure if it was mandatory to buy one anyway.

Edit here: blackberry screen hard to read SDN. No avatars.

Your dad can buy you one later toom 😉 it's really nice whej you can try different models and see if you like one more than another. Get a rain check. 😉

sorry, I wasn't trying to be a wiseass. I've honestly never heard it called anything else.

Personally, I used to always carry one with me, and definitely did when I was on neuro, but since then I've become pretty adept at eliciting patellar reflexes with my hands. Any other reflexes you'd probably still want something a little more hammer-like. Like a reflex hammer.

Using the end of your stethoscope usually works quite well too.

i think you were mixing up two of us, but ah well... ive also found a good kick works well

you brand new incoming M1s all look the same to us jaded M4s anyway.

I had done the same thing with mixing the posts up, but I was on my blackberry at the time. 😉

Btw... Ok, so new M1s, what's wrong with the following picture? People in other classes should not answer, it's blatantly obvious, and no, the answer I'm looking for is not that I have my hair down or that I look like a tool.

You're wearing the stethoscope around your neck instead of tucked into your coat like a good little orthopod?

Does anyone have experience with taking public transit to the downtown Milwaukee Amtrak Station for both the Amtrak or Megabus?

If someone has driven there, are there long term parking garages (i.e. for a weekend) and how much is it?

Are there students/people at MCW who regularly head down to Chicago (family reasons etc.) on weekends and if so are there any carpool options open as well?

Thanks!

if you book early enough, megabus.com has fares for $1 from milwaukee to chicago...regular price is $12 or something...

Out of curiosity, where the heck is the 24-hr starbucks? I tried googling it...and failed miserably. 🙁

Also, I've officially moved to Tosa. If anyone is interested in doing something, pm me~!

It's on Highway 100 (also 108th St in some places), just south of Bluemound, just north of the I-94 on-ramps. It's by the big St. Joseph's outpatient clinic.

Haha. I hope it's not hell. But I am already getting homesick. Hopefully, things will change as soon as school starts. Frisbee is evil. I cracked my middle finger playing frisbee.

So, I'm a second year. And am going to my dentist here in MN soon. But... I don't ever remember getting a dental card. I didn't waive coverage. Do you guys know where they include the dental insurance for our budget? Is it included in the medical/dental costs? I'm getting paranoid that I never got signed up last year and didn't use it last year. But I want my teeth cleaned!! Oh.. does anyone have their card that has the member number to call? I can't find a number for Anthem Dental anywhere! It says call the number on the back of your card. If I had a card I would do that!

A few nights ago I had kind of a financial freak-out, so I have a few questions for all of you experienced medical students.

First of all, after completing the MPN we don't have to contact our lendor for anything, right? I guess I always figured that MCW forwards our information to them after we complete the MPN, but now I'm just not so sure since I never really looked into it.

Also, all of my deferment forms for my undergrad loans require a signature from someone at MCW to confirm that I am in fact a student at their institution. Should I send these documents prior to orientation, or present them to whomever I meet with during my "private consultation" with a financial advisor?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

So anyone correct me if i am wrong....but once you file you MPN you are done on the lender side. You still may have to fill stuff out for MCW. As for your forms, im not really sure who signs it. The academic affairs office may have to sign it. If the financial aid office can sign it, you can just bring it to the office in person any day or just bring it to the meeting. Just a note, your meeting (if you havent made it yet) maybe several weeks from when you start.

Since I'm already in Tosa, I was wondering if I should go ahead and open a local checking account or should I wait until orientation (would I get a special or something through school?)? Thanks guys. 😎

I haven't heard of such a thing. One super duper benefit of US Bank (the only one I can think of right now) is that there is a US Bank in Froedtert, which has saved my butt a couple times when I know I'll be stuck at work all day.

I have looked over the tentative schedule, and DAMN!! Many days we have a ton of lecture, like 8am-5pm. I think it would be better to study on my own rather than getting my brain numb by that much classroom time. Is that a good idea or bad?

Yes. M&I offered $50 free for a checking account. One of the other banks had a kickback, too. You might call and tell them you're starting at MCW and see if they'll just give you the deal now.

So when does the weather usually get crappy? Late November? Or is it just cold but not too bad until January? I was there mid November last year for interviews and the weather was cold but not snowing. It was nice and crisp. How long does that last?

December can have its days (3 years running December 1st has been an unenjoyable winter day for me) but the months to watch out for are January and February and often good chunks of March.

Fashion Question! What do most girls wear to the White Coat Ceremony? (jacket/skirt set or pant suit?) Is it alright to wear something with color, outside of the usual blue, black, white monotony? 🙂

Also- what are the chances of getting one extra white coat ceremony ticket?

Thanks!

Start out by going to class and then see which ones you can skip. I started skipping 60-90% of class during second semester of M1.

A dress or a nice skirt and blouse works great. Any color is fine. It doesn't make sense to wear a jacket or suit because you're going to be putting your white coat on over it. Nothing bad will happen to you if you wear nice slacks instead of a skirt.

What if it's the only thing you have? Hmmm?

I wore my suit because that's what I had. If the stupid white coat ceremony wasn't required, I would've spent more time buying clinic clothes or getting my apt ready.

If I ever start a med school, I won't have a white coat ceremony and commencement won't be required to attend.

What kind of suit do you have, Ashers? On mine, the jacket is not attached to the rest of the suit and it is possible to leave the jacket at home in the closet. In which case, what's left is A SKIRT.

And a blouse. I do not recommend going topless to the white coat ceremony.

The shirt I had to go under my jacket doesn't look good without a jacket, so it'd be bad sleeveless shirt or shirt + jacket. I remember other people wearing suits, because I initially felt weird until I saw that other people did the same.

just wear what the ladies wear in the clinics: a dark t shirt and some slightly-nicer-than-jeans pants

I'm looking up tickets for thanksgiving and keeping in mind the M1 Fall schedule seen here: http://www.mcw.edu/FileLibrary/User/ddenzin/M1_Master_Copy_Fall_2008.pdf

When they have an AUD under the class, does it mean there is an audio recording of the lecture available?

Also on Tuesday November 25th, it has all the classes with AUD except for Anatomy lec and lab of course. In lab it says we are to complete the pelvic dissection. How bad would it be to miss anatomy lab? I'm really contemplating skipping school on Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week so I can spend more quality time at home. Plus that would allow me to leave the Friday before Thanksgiving week.

AUD means the lecture is in Kerrigan Auditorium. All lectures are recorded unless Chad misses one, which is rare. It is not the end of the world to miss an anatomy lab, though the pelvis is a bit tricky and I've forgotten every single one of the muscles in the pelvic floor now. It is a courtesy to discuss this with your anatomy group in advance so that you don't have just one poor sap doing all the work that day. I was the only womanin my anatomy group and I did not appreciate being all alone on scrotum and penis day. But I got over it through declaring a day of rest for myself on rectum day.

Either get together and do some in advance or ensure you have at least two people in class that day or, you know, talk it out or something.

But it's usually okay to miss a day or two.

I remember the anatomy lab being very very sparse that day and I wished that I would have skipped and gone to florida sooner!

Ah, you said what I was thinking! Sorry Ashers.

Bingo.

For instance, today I wore editor pants from Express and a J. Crew t-shirt.

Hey guys, I have another random question.

In Wisconsin, are out-of-state students exempt from transferring their vehicle registration? Or would I need to register my car with Wisconsin and obtain a new license?

Thanks!
